CourseObjective:
Theobjectiveofthiscourseistointroducestudentstodifferentaspectsofmeasuring
deformation,strains,andstressesfordevelopingamechanisticunderstandingofboththe
materialandthestructurebehavior.Youwillbeintroducedto:
1. Experimentalconceptsinsolidmechanics.
2. Variousmethodsformeasuringappliedforcesanddisplacements.
3. Pointwisedisplacementmeasurements(e.g.,straingage).
4. Transducerapplications(e.g.LVDT, Straingages,capacitivegages,Piezoelectric
elements).
5. Applicationofwaveopticstomaterialsresearch.
6. Fullfielddisplacementmeasurements(e.g.photoelasticity,gridandmoir,digital
imagecorrelation).

CoursePolicies:
1. Homeworkwillbeassignedonaregularbasisandwillbedueinclassonthe
specified date (as announced in class). Late homework will not be accepted
withoutpriorapprovalorvalidexcuse.Consultationwithotherstudentstoclear
upconfusionpointsisencouraged.However,allsubmittedhomeworkmustbe
yourownwork.
2. LaboratorysessionswillbeheldeitherweeklyorbiweeklyinHoweHall,Rm
0620.Somelaboratoryexperimentswillrequirewrittenworktobesubmittedbya
specifieddateforgrading.
