Lesson Plan for Formal Observation

Daily Math Routines

Mental Math: 8 questions from mental math binder, students do on whiteboards

Math Fluency Practice: Division facts, 5 minutes

Review & Practice: Plickers students will do several review problems from previous lessons
this week

Main Math Lesson: Multiplying Mixed Numbers

Standards
5.NF.B.4. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to
multiply and divide fractions.

Objectives
SWBAT multiply mixed numbers by changing mixed numbers into improper fractions.
SWBAT multiply fractions by cross cancelling.

Anticipatory Set
Journal About Math students write objectives on one side of the journal, and on the
other side they write everything they know about mixed numbers so far.

Direct Instruction & Modeling


Multiplying Mixed Numbers
o Steps
1. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
2. Cross cancel to simplify
3. Multiply straight across
4. Convert product back to mixed number
o Examples will be done on the board following each of these steps
o Students will write these steps and examples in their Journal About Math

Guided Practice
Practice problems on board, students solve using whiteboards.
Do first problem on worksheet together with students

Independent Practice
Worksheet: Multiplying Mixed Numbers, Math Practice Book pg. 62
Students may work in pairs to complete the worksheet.
I will circulate to help students individually as needed
Closure
Students will be given 5 minutes to write in their Journal About Math reflecting on what
they learned and how comfortable they feel about this specific topic. This will be their
ticket to lunch.

Assessment
Informal assessments throughout the lesson by questioning and also by having students
repeat objectives and instructions.
The worksheet will act as an assessment of student learning.
The reflections that students write in their journals will also be used to assess their
learning.
