At the Paediatrician

Mrs. Pan takes her son to their family doctor because he has not been well for some time.

D Hello, Mrs Pan, how are you? I havent seen you for a long time, whats wrong
with Frank?

D Let me see, just as Id suspected, he has Measles.

D No, Small Pox has been eradicated in Australia, measles is a blotchy rash which
starts behind the ears and on the face and then spreads onto the chest and back. It
reaches its peak in two days or so by which time the youngster feels better,
although the cough persists until the end of the illness.

P Frank

D Well, its too late now because by the time the rash appears the child has been
infectious for a week, so there is no need to isolate him from the other members
of the family. Your other two children would have already caught the infection by
now.

P Frank

D No. Because Measles is a viral infection, antibiotics are not needed, unless there is
complication like an ear infection, which is not uncommon. Keep the child in bed
and use aspirin to control the temperature. A cough syrup will help alleviate the
cough.

D Chest infections may also occur and very rarely a more serious complication
arises, like brain infection, encephalitis, which may cause permanent brain
damage. But if your children have been immunised, you shouldnt worry.

D You shouldnt worry, everything will be alright. Keep him in bed and bring in the
others so that I can have a look at them too. Frank should be fine in about a week.
