Anderson, Alaina. "How to Succeed in Junior Year Without Really... Dying." College Magazine.

28 Oct. 2015. Web. 09 Apr. 2017.

This article focuses on Junior year and the importance of it on students futures. The

author singles in on 10 main resolutions to common issues Juniors have in college. The author

mentions important issues such as having to write a resume, how to take on a first interview and

how to apply for internships and many others. She goes into detail about how challenging and

crucial junior year is and how important it is to make yourself look good to employers on paper

and off.

This source will be relevant to my paper because not only upcoming freshman and

current freshman need advice on how to succeed in college. Upperclassmen deal with just as

much stress as everyone else, only just a different type of stress. I never knew how much Juniors

and seniors had to deal with until I read this article and now I see just how important these issues

are and what needs to be fixed. I feel that after reading this I am fully prepared to take on my

junior year and that this information helped me a great deal.

The author of this article is Alaina Anderson and she is currently a student at Saint Marys

College. Since she is a current college student dealing with the everyday stress of having to

succeed in bettering her future I feel that she is well qualified to write an article such as this one.

She is also currently a Marketing intern so she has had to go through the struggle of applying for

an internship and going through an interview and managing time in college.

Dopp, Austin, and Thomas S. Parish. "The Abc's of How to Succeed in College." College

Student Journal. 41.4 (2007). Print.

In this article the authors highlight the importance of succeeding in college and how it

will benefit in the future. They list off tips starting with every letter of the alphabet hence the title

The Abcs of how to succeed in college. Not only does it give advice on schoolwork and

studying it also gives tips on how to take care of close relationships and social problems in

college. Although this isnt a very long source it does bring up some important points such as

investing yourself in your education, making sure to eat healthy, focusing on daily tasks and how

to ask great questions.

This article pertains to my essay well because it emphasizes the point I am trying to make

through my inquiry. It uses a fun and organized way to give tips to students and a variety of

things. When I chose my topic I knew I wanted to focus on studying, schoolwork and how to

balance a social and school life and this article helps with all of that. When reading through all of

the Abcs I knew some from common sense but I was intrigued at some that I havent even

thought would be put into this category of succeeding in college.

I found this source through the UNC Charlotte library page so my first assumption of this

article was that it would be a credible source. Although I have not heard of the authors of this

particular article it was one of the top and most frequent ones to pop up when I had searched

various versions of my title. The two authors, Austin Dopp and Thomas Parish, are both from

Upper Iowa University so they know this information through their personal experience and
Knapp 3

knowledge. I feel more comfortable using an article that is written by former college students

seeing that they were once in my position and went through the same issues as I did. This source

is reputable to me and I believe that it gave me great information for my inquiry project.

Hansen, Randall S. "25 Tips to Help You Survive and Thrive Your Freshman Year."

Quintessential LiveCareer. Web. 09 Apr. 2017.

In this article the author starts off by going into detail about how college wont be like

high school. It will be a whole new experience and something you've probably not had to deal

with before. He states that although it might be scary it is something you should be excited for

but also something you will need to prepare for. He gives advice such as go to all orientations

and tours, make sure to be organized, finding a safe place to study, meeting with your professors

and advisors, and to prepare for the bests and worst times of your life.

Most of what the author is saying in this article is exactly what I want to be presented in

my paper. It will give the reader a sense of excitement and preparedness as they take on college

life. Unlike a few of my other sources this one focuses on students starting their first year in

college rather than senior year of high school going into college. I plan on writing my inquiry as

a guide for going into college then freshman year then the next four years because everyone

needs as much help with the same issues no matter how old you are. This article presented me

with new tips that I hadnt thought of before such as the importance of getting to know your

professors and advisors and the fact that students will have to prepare to feel overwhelmed.

These are two important points I need to make sure I include in my inquiry and this source

brought them to my attention.

The author of this article is Randall S. Hansen. He is the founder of Quintessential

Careers and the CEO of empoweringsites.com. He is also a published author of several books. I

feel that he is extremely qualified to write on this topic seeing that he has taught college students

for 15 years before. This source came from Quintessential Careers so I feel comfortable using

this in my paper due to the fact the author of the article founded this entire website. It is a well

written article that gives me major points to add to my essay so I would say this article helped

me a great amount.

Lockhart, Bette Ann C. How To Succeed In College. The School Counselor, vol. 12, no. 4,

1965, pp. 244246.,

In this article How to succeed in college. she explains college as something exciting

and fun. Although it is exhilarating to be independent and have an increased amount of freedom

she notes that there are important guidelines that should be followed to insure young adults are

prepared for the college lifestyle. This article is directed to incoming freshman as they ready

themselves to choose which colleges they want to attend and what majors they want to pursue.

This source is relevant to my topic by coincidentally having the same title as my inquiry

and by giving me information that focuses on a certain group such as high school seniors and

incoming freshman. This article gave me examples of certain issues young adults coming into

college may have such as unrealistic expectations, trouble leaving parents and home

relationships, newfound independence, leaving high school behind, not being able to plan time

efficiently, etc. Along with these issues she lists tips on how to fix some of these freshman

struggles like being prepared to make adjustments in social and school life, striving for

independence rather than being scared of it, finding a way to adapt to new surroundings and

many more. This source will help me start off my inquiry seeing that it focuses on entering

college life and advice on how to handle the changes that comes with it.

This article was written by Bette Ann C. Lockhart and was found in a book called The

School Counselor. I didnt receive much information on the author and what types of credentials

she had that would give her credibility but I did notice that this article was published by the

American School Counselor Association which, whenever I looked into it, is a legitimate non

profit organization that was founded in 1952. The fact that a legitimate association such as this

one published this book gives me the belief that Lockhart was qualified to write this article

because school counselors deal with this kind of stuff all the time with high school seniors while

they make the challenging decision about colleges.

O'Shaughnessy, Lynn. "5 Great Ways to Succeed in College." CBS News. CBS Interactive, 12

July 2011. Web. 02 Apr. 2017.

This article is an informational piece about the top 5 ways to succeed in college. The

author starts off by stating that students are in a decline in education at the moment and need to

find ways to bring their grades back up. She lists off good points such as time management,

finding a major you love, finding help if needed and attending classes. She follows up each of

these points with exactly why doing this will help with success in college.

This article is relevant to my topic by giving me more specific information of major

things that'll help students get through college. As I was reading this I already began thinking of

ways I could change my daily life to better improve my learning and study habits. The author

pointed out things like the fact that students assume that since its easier to skip classes, due to a

laidback professor or lecture hall style classes, that its okay for them to do so which can
Knapp 6

jeopardize their education or the fact that cramming everything in last minute will result in poor

grades and increased stress but with the help of time management students can be on the right

and healthy track to success. This source is one thatll give me some backing for the dos and

donts of college for potential students.

I found this article on CBS news website and although CBS is not an 100% credible

source it is a well known news station and a reliable source at most times. The author of this

article, Lynn Oshaughnessy, is a best selling author of The College Solution and a

consultant/speaker on college issues. This gives her credibility to write an article about how to

succeed in college. She knows exactly how to deal with and what to say to parents and students

about to enter the world of college and how to make sure they feel comfortable and assure them

they will succeed.
