On balancing family and music, the long road to success, and the much anticipated new album.
E li Young Band continues to evolve
musically in fresh and exciting ways.
Their new single, Skin & Bones, is
currently spinning on Sirius XMs The
Highway. With a trio of platinum and
multi-platinum #1 hits like Drunk Last on the road now?
Night, Even If It Breaks Your Heart
and Crazy Girl under their belts, their
last album 10,000 TOWNS ranked #1
on the Billboard Top Country Albums
chart, landeda coveted Top 5 spot on the
Billboard 200 and claimed the #1 spot on
the iTunes Country Albums chart. So is tonight the kickoff to the tour?
Eli Young Band will be
performing at the Rodeo Grounds in
Clovis on April 28th as part of the events
surrounding the 2017 Wrangler Gold
Tour. Jon Jones of Eli Young Band, talked
to The Fresno Flyer about the new album
set to release this summer, where theyve
been, where theyre going, and a request to
any openers who cover one of their songs.
Ive noticed that you guys have some
fairs and festivals on the tour this year
all across your schedule, has that been a
big part of the tours over the years?
JJ: It has been. This is when the festival/
fair season starts amping up. Its a lot of
fun, its been a really fun way for us to see
the country and get a taste for not just the
landscape but also the people. I think you
get a really good cross section who come
out to a lot of the fairs.
The energy is real different between
being in an outside venue/festival versus
being in a club?
JJ: It is. And I think this is going to be
a really fun year for us because we were
trying to mix it up quite a bit. So we might
play a festival or fair one day and then

interesting for us.
You guys actually have a show tonight
(4/14) in Wichita Falls, TX so are you
up, but we do like to have a moment of
calm like well clear the bus and make
JJ: We are. I am in the bus, in the back
of the bus, right now. We only live a few
hours from Wichita Falls so its kind of a
backyard show for us tonight.
JJ: Weve [actually] got just 2 shows this
weekend and then [we go] back home.
The best thing about the way were touring
this year is that I dont think well be out
more than a week or two ever. Well stay
out probably once or twice for more
than a week, but Ive got a 4 month old
daughter at home and we all have young
kids, so weve kind of scaled back. We tour
kind of all year, it never really stops but we
fly home almost every week. So its kind of
a different way of touring than what a lot
artists do.
Yea, sounds like youre able to
incorporate both being close to your
families while still being able to do
music and tour all year round. Thats
pretty awesome.
JJ: Yea it [is]. When we were younger and
we were just out of college there was no
problem leaving home for 3 months, it
was kind of nice but life is different now.
I think weve done a good job of figuring
out the ways in which we want to grow
up and still kind of acting like kids on the
road sometimes when we want to. I think
if youre going to choose music as your life
you have got to be able to find a balance
and still have a life.

Do you guys have any pre-show rituals,
anything that helps you get ready for
the stage or before you go on tour?
JJ: It doesnt really help us get pumped
less experimenting and just back to bass,
sure its just us for the last half hour or
45min before the set and just talk about
anything we need to go through for the
show, listen to some music nothing too
intense, we like for it to be a little down
time, a little private time.
I read in an interview some years back
that when you guys were first getting
started you played some really long sets
that were mostly cover songs and hardly
any original music do you guys
ever come across other bands who are
covering you now?
JJ: Haha yea. We have had a lot of bands,
especially around Texas and wherever there
are cover bands that cover other regional
acts that are from around there but
theyll open up for us and talk about the
songs they love of ours that are the ones
they cover. Its such a great form of flattery,
but I have yet to hear any of them try to
play it live before us. That would be a fun
thing, I think that if you can cover one
of our songs and youre opening up for us
you should have to play it, just for fun.
That would be so nerve-wracking, Im
sure.
JJ: [laughs] Probably.
Is there anything from those early years
that you guys have held on to as far as
your writing style or writing methods
that youre still using today?

JJ: Actually, on this record that Skin &
Bones is the current single for and will
be out this summer. I think a lot of this
upcoming record we went back to our
roots in the sounds we were going for in
the studio of wanting it to be less layering,
drums, guitar, a little bit of organ.. you
know, the foundation of where we started.
The stuff that we were really into when
we were younger that helped us build
a big fan base. I feel like in terms of
songwriting weve come a really long way
as far as getting better at it but I know
that theres some fantastic songwriters out
there who have a method that works for
them every time, we just continue to try
every little thing and see what works.
Thats really great. Fans really tend to
rally up bigger than usual when they
hear one of their favorite bands went
back to their roots again. So thats
awesome to hear that you guys did that
with the album coming out this summer.
JJ: Thank you, well see if it holds true.
Until its in the fans hands they will
really let us know how weve done. Im
excited for that process.
Whats one of the biggest things you
know now about doing music that you
wish you would have known then?
JJ: Oh man. Its a long, long road and just
to slow down and enjoy it sometimes. I
love the way weve done it, meaning I love
our missteps and successes. I think weve
learned to embrace both and realize that
theres going to be a handful of both. I
have a lot of respect for people that go
on American Idol and win, and then can

Celebrating the spirit of the American West.

T he American cowboy is a beloved

image of strength, daring, and
unrivaled resolve. He battled the
elements, slept under the stars, and
fought off the outlaws always out to
steal cattle. Some would say hes the
iconic folk-hero of the American West,
and for a great many, his spirit lives on
in the sport of rodeo.
Dating back to the 1800s, the
demand for skilled horsemen arose
when Spain held many of the land titles
across the west. As they established
more communities and missionaries
they needed to raise cattle, and here is
where our cowboys story begins. The
long cattle drives could be as long as
15 miles per day and required a unique
combination of skills to achieve, skills
they were always improving and
always comparing. Naturally, informal
competitions, the first known rodeos,
erupted amongst cowboys as they
sought to prove the best in riders and
ropers.
Typically existing between
ranchers and cowboys, the competitions
werent yet a public phenomenon.
However, with the encroachment of
railroads, enforcement of federal land
laws, and new settlers staking their
claim to build homes, the wide open
West became smaller and smaller.
Without the long cattle drives, cowboy
labor was no longer needed in the large
numbers seen in previous years and as
the work disappeared, cowboys took
their skills into a new arena that would
best be described as the Wild West
Show.
Popularity grew and now
cowboys could supplement their
income by performing before a
paying audience captivated by their
persona. As recognition spread across
the country, rodeos established a new
form of cowboy; the professional rodeo
competitor. Unfortunately, there were
those who would take advantage of
the hardworking cowboy by refusing
to pay or paying less than originally
agreed upon. Fed up with the subpar
treatment a group of competitors
banded together in 1936 to form what
is known today as the Professional
Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA)
in answer to the lack of accountability
and professionalism regularly showed
by promoters of the day.
PRCA remains the largest
sanctioning body of rodeo in the U.S.
and Canada. Touring internationally
every year, the PRCA Pro Rodeo makes
numerous appearances throughout the
U.S. beginning in April and running
all the way to end of September. In
California alone, the tour makes its
way through 25 different cities, most
notably for the rodeo events in Clovis.
However, beginning in 2016, Clovis
made the list on to the prestigious
Wrangler Gold Tour of the Wrangler
Million Dollar Tour.
The Wrangler Gold Tour
showcases the PRCAs top competing
cowboys in the nation and only visits

less than 10 select cities in which to
compete. In 2016, Clovis was named
one of only 7 cities in the world listed
as part of the tour. As of 2017, Clovis
remains as one of 9 cities in the world
and one of 2 California cities, Salinas
being the other, listed on the Wrangler
Gold Tour.
The Wrangler Million Dollar
Tour exists in 2 tiers of competition,
Gold and Silver. The Gold tier boasts
an impressive $20,000 prize purse
for each of the PRCAs 6 events. As
of 2015 the total prize money for all
events totaled over $3.3 million for the
Gold Tour and $2.5 million for the
Silver.
The Wrangler Gold Tour
appears in Clovis on April 28th through
April 30th at the Rodeo Grounds.

available to them today that you would
have loved to have when you guys were
getting started?
JJ: Digital recording. You can make a really
good sounding record, if you want to take
the time you could do it on the road or you
could do it during the day before the show.

P ancakes, eggs, hash browns, sausage,
and bacon; these are some of the
jewels of all creation. They are the alpha
and, at 3 a.m. when youre severely
inebriated, sometimes the omega of
foods. Before their inception there was
but tasteless gruel, misery, and utter
darkness, and after their buoyant delivery
unto the world, hope, jubilation, and
light.
The dishes are simple, a single
ingredient in some cases, which only
needs to be heated to the proper
temperature before being plated and
served. You wouldnt think that it
would be very difficult to find places
able to execute said dishes well but in
Fresno you would be wrong. Not every
establishment knows how to make an
egg over easy or how to cook bacon until
it meets the delicate cross section of
crispy yet moist.
There is hope, however, because

The not so skinny rescue horse and how he found
his second chance after 15 years.

There was no way I was going to send
him back. These are words that echo
across everyone who has ever looked
into the eyes of an animal and have seen
in them the need for a loving hand. Its
a snap decision that has us racing with
arms wide open, scooping said animal up
and into our lives for a happily ever after.
Although the ending is much the same,
the journey to get there can be considered
far different for that of a horse, and more
specifically, a beloved 21-year-old Friesian
named Skinny.
6 years ago, Visalia-based horse
trainer, Leeanne Lloyd, was on her way to
pick up a gelding from a local breeder to
take part in the Clovis parade. However,
when she arrived what she found was not
