Our school is contributing to the waste landfill at the local tip.

Before we set up a plan to attempt to reduce our contribution, we need to know

how much rubbish we are actually generating.
The first step will be to identify what types of rubbish we are generating.
In a previous lesson, we found that there are six rubbish bins in the junior area,
and four in the senior area of the playground.
The only way to find out how much rubbish we generate is to empty the bins,
armed with plastic gloves, and actually count the items we find.
We used a tally to count the items.
We found the following when we tallied the contents of two bins:

Items Tally
Apple cores 1111 1111 1111 11
Banana peels 1111 1111 111
Plastic wrappers 1111 1111 1111 1111 111
Plastic bottles 1111 1111 1
Paper bags and wrappers 1111 111
Orange peel 1111 11

Task 1:
Convert this tally table to a spreadsheet in Excel that shows the number of each
type of item in the two bins. Use Column 1 to show the type, and Column 2 to
show the frequency of each type.
Task 2:
Use a basic formula to calculate in Column 3 the total number of each item
expected in the whole school in a week.
Task 3:
Use a basic formula to calculate in Column 4 the total number of each item
expected in the whole school in a month (the minimum decomposition time for
any item).
Create a chart to represent this data visually.
Write a brief explanation of your chart on your spreadsheet, identifying patterns
and items of interest.
Upload your completed spreadsheet to your Weebly website.
Should you wish to embed a Google Spreadsheet, please discuss this in your
tutorials.
