Puan Maimunah sells nasi lemak in my school. She is thin and hunched because she has to
work hard to support her family. Her hair is grey and she has many lines on her face.
Every morning she wakes up at four to make nasi lemak to sell during the day. First, Puan
Maimunah makes sure she has everything she needs, like eggs, ikan bilis, chilli, rice,
cucumbers and coconuts. Then, she starts by cooking the rice with santan. While the rice is
cooking, she makes the ikan bilis sambal. She does not cook the cucumber but cuts them into
slices. Puan Maimunah also slices the eggs after she has boiled them.
Once the rice is cooked, she begins tearing the banana leaves into little square pieces. She
uses them to pack the nasi lemak. At about six oclock she puts her nasi lemak packets into a
basket and takes them to school. Each packet is sold for fifty cents.

Questions 1 5

Read the following text and answer the questions below.

Malaysia is not the home of the oil palm. It was brought to Malaysia from Africa. It was first
planted in gardens to make the surroundings more beautiful. That was in the year 1875.
Then in 1917 it was planted in large areas of land called plantations. The increase in
the worlds population meant that more cooking oil was needed. This encouraged people in
Malaysia to open up more land for planting oil palm. In 1929 there were 16 194 hectares of oil
palm in the country. The total area planted with oil palm shot up to 202 429 hectares in 1974.
The oil palm looks like the coconut tree. However, its trunk is thicker, shorter and
straighter. One hectare of oil palm can give twice the amount of oil as compared to the
coconut. In fact, it produces more oil than any other oil-producing plant.

B 1917 D 1929

2 Give the main reason why people increased the area for oil palm plantation.
A It was easy to plant.
B It was a beautiful plant.
C More cooking oil was needed.

3 The words open up in the second paragraph means

A clean C dig

leopards victim to spot it, especially when it hides in the trees. The colours of the leopards
body match that of tree trunks and dried leaves.
