Title: Animals and the Alphabet
Grade: Kindergarten

Materials Needed:
o Paper
o Pencil
o Crayons
o Yarn
o Erasers
o White construction paper, 2 per student
o Dry erase board and marker, 1 per student
o Animal pictures

Goals:
o Learn about many different animals and identify them.
o Write the names of the animals.

Objectives:
o Recite the alphabet.
o Identify the letter each sound makes.
o Identify the names of the animals that begin with certain letters.

Procedure:
1. Review the alphabet with the class. Identify what sound each letter makes.
Identify animals whose names begin with each letter.

2. The class will make a book of the alphabet. Let them know and divide them
into groups of five or six students each. Go around the room and have each
group recite the alphabet.

3. Assign each student a letter or two to work on for the book. Make sure each
letter is covered.

4. Have each student go over the letter they are assigned. Have them write the
letter on their dry erase board to demonstrate.

5. Show each student a picture of an animal that goes with their letter. Discuss
the name of the animal and the sound it makes. Discuss where each animal
might live.
6. Go over each letter of the alphabet and all the animals with the whole class.
Make sure each group can identify their animal and letter.

7. Give each student a piece of regular paper, a piece of construction paper,


and crayons. Let the students practice drawing their animal and letter on the
regular paper. When ready, have each student draw their animal and the
letter it goes with on their white piece of construction paper.

8. When finished, take each picture, and bind it together in a book by hole
punching the side, string a piece of yarn through each hole and tie a bow at
the end. Share the book with the class, and have the students identify the
letters and animals.

he/she has learned.
