I. General Information:

Discipline: Science
Unit Topic: Life Cycle of an Apple
Time Frame: 45 minutes
Text: Scholastic News Article: Investigate Apples

Apple Life Cycle KWL chart
Scholastic News Accompanying electronic video
Variety of apples
Apple Parts exit slip

II. Essential Understanding/Questions:


1. How do seeds change and grow into plants?
2. How do young plants resemble their parents in
appearance?
3. What are the different parts of an apple?

III. Standards/Indicators
Rl2- Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
Rl4- Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the
meaning of words and phrases in a text.
Rl5- Know and use various text features (e.g. headings, tables
of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key
facts or information in a text.

IV. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to understand


that a certain type of seed will always grow that certain
plant. Students will also be able to identify and use various
text features to enahnce their ability to investigate and label
the parts of an apple.

VI. Procedures:
Introduction:
1. Read the Essential Questions
2. Engage in whole group discussion retelling the main
idea and key details from the texts that were
previously read aloud
3. Review the Apple Life Cycle KWL chart that the class
has constructed
4. Review and discuss the meaning of the apple life
cycle vocabualry word cards
5. Review and discuss nonfiction text features

Teaching/Activities
1. Read Scholastic News Article: Investigate Apples
2. While reading, the teacher will initiate
conversation for students to think like a
scientist
- Ask and answer questions to help determine or
clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text
- Determine the key details and connect the details
to the main topic
- Identify the various text features to locate key facts
and information within the text
3. After reading, revisit the main topic and key details
4. Watch the Scholastic News accompanying electronic
video
5. The teacher will explain that the students will use
information that they learned from the text to engage in an
apple investigation
6. Each table group of students will be given a half of
an apple
7. Students will use their five senses to investigate the
apples 5 parts
Closure
1. Students will complete an Apple Parts exit slip
2. Before collecting the exit slips, students will partner
conference
3. Exit slips will be collected to determine which
students understood the lessons objectives and the
students that need more assistance
4. Revist the EQ
5. Students will discuss and add information they
learned to answer the EQ
