To understand how to use the slide rule, first we must understand what a trinomial is.

A
trinomial has a standard form of 2 + + where A, B, and C are constants.

When A is equal to 1 ( 2 + + ), to factor the trinomial, make a list of factors of C, we shall

label them c1 and c2, and choose the ones that add up to equal B. The factored form will be
( + 1 )( + 2 ).
Lets look at an example with actual numbers:
Factor 2 + 5 + 6
Factors of 6: 16 23 1 6 2 3
Which ones add up to 5: 23
Put into factored form: ( + 2)( + 3)
Check your answer: Use the mnemonic device FOIL,

First ( + 2)( + 3)
Outer
Inner = +3+2+23
Last = 2 + 3 + 2 + 6
= 2 + 5 + 6

Lets try one with subtraction instead of addition:

Factor 2 8 20
Factors of -20: 1 20 2 10 4 5
1 20 2 10 4 5
Which ones add up to -8: 2 10
Put into Factored Form: ( + 2)( 10)
Check your answer:

First ( + 2)( 10)

Outer
Inner = + 10 + 2 + 2 10
Last = 2 + 10 + 2 + 20
= 2 8 20
