ABSTRACT

Ratnasari, Dina. 2014. The Effect of Bullying Culture towards Children

Psychological Development as Reflected in the CJ7 Movie. A Final
Project. English Department. Language and Art Faculty, Semarang State
University. Advisor : Rini Susanti Wulandari, S.S., M.Hum. Advisor II: Dr.
Januarius Mujiyanto, M.Hum.

Key words: bullying, children, effect

This final project analyses the bullying phenomena happened to children as

reflected in CJ7 movie. Bullying can be done by anybody. It is often happened
everywhere including in a school environment. CJ7 movie depicts bullying among
children that often happens at school. It also depicts how bullying is done and
what its effects toward the victim of bullying are. This final project is aimed at
describing how bullying among children done in the movie of CJ7, identifying
what factors causing bullying, and finding out the effects of bullying. In collecting
the data, the writer used library observation. On the other hand, in analyzing the
data, the writer used psychological approach. To sum up, in the story of CJ7 film,
bullying is done directly and indirectly. Direct and indirect bullying can be done
both verbally and physically. Bullying is done by people who have superiority in
social, economical, and physical aspects. On the other hand, people who are lack
of superiority in those aforementioned aspects are always being bullied. The effect
of bullying is always harmful. Bullying causes physical harm and psychological
harms like stress, feeling isolation, and willing to revenge. This study is expected
to be useful for the readers in general and for the students of English Department
who are interested in conducting research with the same approach and topic.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This current chapter presents an introduction of the study. There are six

subchapters which consist of background of the study as the first subchapter; the

second subchapter is the reasons for choosing the topic, then the statement of

problems, the objectives of the study, significance of the study, and the last

subchapter is the outline of the study. The description of each subchapter is

presented as follows.

1.1Background of the Study

Everyone should have experienced the most wonderful moment in their life. One

of the most beautiful moments in everyones life is childhood, where at that time

someone can enjoy the beauty of the world without any burdens. Generally, a

child spent his childhood by playing and doing some fun activities, either with

their parents, relatives, playmates, neighbor, and classmates or all people around

them. Being a child is very fun because at that period, love, affection and attention

from both parents and peoples around, entirely devoted to them. All their needs

and wishes will always be granted by parents because every parent will definitely

give the best for their children. Commonly, childhood is identical with the play

world because playing is one of children necessity. By playing, childrens kinetic

and motoric skills will grow well; it also can influence emotional intelligence and
creativity of the child. Moreover, playing will enhance social skill and develop

self-esteem of children. So, let children playing and interacting with society in

childhood is very important in order to get a balanced growth.

But in fact, not all children are lucky of being able to enjoy such a happy

childhood. As we all know, it has been familiar that some cases of child abuse are

increasing day by day. In 1962, Henry Kempe was writing this problem in Journal

of the American Medical Association and reported that from 71 hospital,

apparently occurred 302 cases of violence against children, where 33 children

reportedly died because of persecution, and 85 suffered from permanent brain

damage.

Violence against children is a violation in the form of either physical or

psychological torture that can cause pain, suffering, disability, and even death.

There are four main types of violence against children, that is physical, sexual,

psychological or emotional, and neglect. Physical abuse often occurs everywhere,

in the home which is conducted by parents, caregivers/nursemaid, or other family

member, then in the residential neighborhood by the neighbor itself, playmates or

any other elder. Even in school, where children should acquire sense of secure,

there also happen some violence against children which is held by teachers and

other schools friends. Physical abuse may include physical beatings of a childs

body, either by hand or other hard stuffs which cause pain, mild or severe injuries,

and make children suffer from trauma. Besides that, kicking, slapping, pulling ear

or hair, and shaking childrens body rudely as well as the categories of physical

abuse.
Other violence actions that frequently happen everywhere are children

abandonment, forced employment, and child trafficking. The offenders of children

abandonment usually are the parents of the child itself. They ignore their children

in a way do not fulfill childrens life necessities, do not giving love and affection,

do not feed and also give a decent living facilities to their children. In addition,

there are still many children who become beggars, a street singing beggar, a

pitchman and a laborer that was deliberately employed by their parents or certain

group of people because of financial problem. There are so many cases show that

parents of poor families sell their own baby or children just for gaining some

money, so that they are free from economical hardship. Worse yet, the case of

throwing or killing baby/children who are born due to the actions of free sex are

also still increasing. Human trafficking is also a part of the sexual abuse on child.

Usually girls, pre-teen age and teenagers are abducted by persons in crime, and

then they are sold and forced to be sexual workers. In some cases, selling children

to be sexual workers are conducted by the parents themselves. Financial problem

and pressures of life is the biggest reason why parents do such inhumane actions.

From those several types of mistreatment, emotional abuse and verbal

abuse are most often happened almost in every place and every day. Anger, scorn,

ridicule, insults, and harsh words is a form of verbal abuse and emotional

maltreatment often done by parents, caregivers, other family members, neighbors,

older children or adults, teachers, and even their schools friends or playmates.

Not only adults who become the offenders of violence action, in some cases,

children also become the actor of violence towards their own playmate or even
schoolmate. Commonly, the violation that is conducted by children to other

children is verbal and physical abuse.

One of violence which is done by children that happen in recent years is

bullying. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children

that involves subtle methods of coercion such as intimidation. Generally, bullying

consists of three basic types of abuse emotional, verbal, and physical. It includes

actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically

such as hitting, kicking, pinching, spitting, tripping or pushing, and verbally such

as name-calling, mocking, teasing or taunting, also excluding someone from a

group on purpose. Bullying can occur during or after school hours. While most

reported bullying happens in the school building, a significant percentage also

happens in places like on the playground or the bus. Children in school,

approximately one in ten children have bullied others and as many as 25% of

children in grades four to six have been bullied. A 2004 study published in the

medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian chidren

aged 11 to 16 are victims of bullying. Studies have found bullying occurs once

every seven minutes on the playground and once every 25 minutes in the

classroom. Bullying can be motivated by race, religion, culture, gender, or ability.

There are some causing factors of bullying that happen in the society.

Bullying which included as a deviation behavior can be inspired by electronic and

also printed mass media, like the internet, television programs, fictional story

books, and newspapers which spread in the community. From some of the media,

television has a big influence on the spread of violence acts toward children

because in the current era of press freedom, television program containing violent
elements are presented in details. Television presents the impression of violence in

the form of movies, news, entertainment and sports like smack down. Those

violent TV programs are consumed widely and freely by all parties, including the

students and children. Violence on television programs which are broadcasted

repeteadly can influence mindsets and behavior of the audience, especially

children. In fact, according to research from the Foundation for Childen

Development Media Jakarta on Television Media Influence the Development of

Children (2006), 91% is a television program for adults, 97% is an entertainment

program, and only 3% which is an educational program.

This is such a terrible condition. Childhood which should be fun and free

from any burdens must be gone because of violence acts carried out by various

parties. Right and protection of children seems to have been overlooked, whereas

children are the greatest asset of our nation that really needs huge attention

because they will determine the future of this nation. Parents and adults should

create happiness for the children, supporting, encouraging, directing, and equip

children with moral values and firm religion or strong faith, so that it can form the

next generation to be better, well-behaved, qualified and peace-lover. However, if

the cases of violence are increasingly rising day by day, children grow up in an

environment filled with action and the threat of violence, then what this nation

will be? Of course if we let it happen, it will raise some negative effects that

would damage this nation and the next generation, increasing crime rate and make

this life no longer peaceful.

This is a social problem which needs serious attention from all of us,

included government, educators, parents, young people, adult and also children.
Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in conducting a research

entitled THE EFFECT OF BULLYING CULTURE TOWARDS CHILDREN

PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT AS REFLECTED IN THE CJ7 MOVIE.

1.2 Reasons for Choosing the Topic

There are some reasons why the film CJ7 is chosen as the subject of this analysis.

The story of this film is very interesting and it gives moral values to the viewer

about social condition such as how we should behave and how we should

socialize in our society, especially to the children as the next generation. This

topic of research is very important for parents, educators, government, adult and

children to know, to avoid, and to understand more about the danger of bullying

that often happened in this society as a social problem.

Children who watch teen or adult movies without parental assistance will

cause the child to behave mimic scenes contained within the film. Bullying that

recently occured among children may be influenced by the scenes contained

within the film or other actions in the television programs. This study will try to

determine whether there is a scene in the film, such as bullying really affects

psychological development in children. Therefore, the film CJ7 is chosen as the

subject of this analysis.

1.3Statements of the Problem

In order to focus on the topic of the research, the writer wants to limit the

discussion of this study by presenting these problems:

(1) How is bullying presented in the CJ7 movie?

(2) What factors cause the bullying?

(3) What are the effects of bullying to the children psychological development?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

After watching the movie closely and concerning the reasons for choosing the

topic, the writer states the objectives of the study as follow:

(1) to describe bullying occurs in CJ7 movie,

(2) to find out causing factors of bullying that happened in the society,
(3) to determine the effect of bullying contained in the film CJ7 on the

development of child psychology.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Related to the objectives of the study, there are some expectation to be shared to

the readers. Firstly, the result of the study can be used as a reference for

developing literary studies. It is expected that the result of the study will facilitate

the readers in understanding the moral and social values of the movie, also give

better understanding about bullying and its effects.

For the English department students, the writer hopes that they will

increase their knowledge about literature and its works and also can use this final

project as a reference. Then, the study is also aimed to give additional knowledge

in analyzing a movie from psychological point of view. Through this final project,

the writer hopes that the readers would increase their knowledge about bullying

and its effects to the children psychology.

It is also hoped that by reading and understanding this final project

report, readers can manage and anticipate themselves from bullying and can face

it wisely, especially for parents and educators in implementing a proper

adeucation, so that children can beome the next generation that have good moral.

Finally, the writer also hopes that this movie could be one of

supplementary literary subject since the significant moral values conveyed by this

movie.

1.6 Outline of the Study

To arrange the final project report systematically, the writer divided this final

project into some chapters and sub-chapters. Chapter I provides introduction

which consists of background of the study, reason for choosing the topic,

statement of the problem, objectives of the study, and outline of the study.

Chapter II is review of related literature, which contains theories

underlying the writing of the study. This chapter discusses film which contains the

definition of film, history of film, genres of film, also discuss about bullying

which contains the theories of bullying, types of bullying, and the effects of

bullying. In this chapter also covers psychology which contains psychology in

literature and children psychology dealing with the effects of bullying towards

children psychological development.

Chapter III presents the method of investigation. It deals with the object of

the study, types of data, role of the researcher, procedure of data collection, and

technique of data analysis.

Chapter IV presents the result of the study. This chapter provides the

overall analysis leading the readers to the findings answering the statement of the

problems.

Chapter V is the last chapter. It presents conclusions and suggestions,

which are relevant to the topic.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The second chapter presents the theories underlying the topic of the study. This

chapter consists of three subchapters; they are review of previous study which has

similar topic or related topic with this study, review of related theories, and

theoretical framework.

2.1 Review of Previous Study

There are two previous studies that deal with this study. The first is Ratna (2008)

who did research entitled Mothers over Rearing as a Form of Child Abuse as

Reflected in Dave Pelzers a Child Called It. Her research focused on the child

abuse which is conducted by parents, especially mother. In analyzing this

research, which emphasizes about mothers over rearing as a form of child abuse,

she used a descriptive qualitative research as a method and psychological in

literature especially novel as the approach. However, this research had aimed at

investigating the types of abuse that a mother did towards her own son as reflected

in the novel A Child Called It. It also provided the limitation of punishment in

rearing that a mother should pay attention to. In addition, the significance of this

study is to share information to the readers and the next researcher about child

abuse which can happen everywhere, even in a family conducted by his/her own

mother.
The other study which has similar topic is conducted by Delvi Andri

Febrian. In 2011, he wrote his final project entitled Children Mischief as a Result

of Indulgent Parenting as Reflected in Shirley Jacksons Short Story Charles.

This research is conducted to analyze how child-indulging parenting happens in

the story, and to discuss the effects of indulgent parenting that are reflected on the

main characters psychological development. The result of his study shows that

indulgent parents in the short story Charles gave the children more negative

effects than the positive effects.

This study aims to complete the studies which had been conducted or

written previously. The two previous studies conducted by Ratna and Delvi Andri

Febrian tend to focus on the child abuse and child mischief which is conducted by

parents in the family scope. Unlike those aforementioned studies which highlight

the child abuse conducted by parents, in this investigation the writer discuss about

social problem among children that is violation conducted by children to other

children in the school environment, called bullying. This study is aimed to give

information to the readers about bullying in school, the causing factors of

bullying, and the negative effects that may appeared. By reading this study,

hopefully the phenomena of bullying can be minimized later on.

2.2 Review of Related Theories

In this subchapter consist of three parts; they are talking about movie, bullying,

and psychology. Each discussion will be elaborated as follows.

2.2.1 Film
People prefer watching film to reading drama or poetry to satisfy their needs in

entertainment. Films give more fun and make it easier to enjoy. Photography, film

editing, camera movement, special effects and other elements are added to the

film to create an art form that is more complex than any other literatures. These

elements make film becomes a complete-art in its part as an art and function in

life.

2.2.1.1 Definition of Film

In this recent time many films are based on narrative story that develops

characterization and mood. Motion picture, film or movies is an example of art.

This form of literary work is considered as the easiest media to convey ones idea

or moral value to the audience. Film is one of literary work such as poetry, prose,

and drama. In a movie, we can find many messages which have moral values

inside. We can call film as motion picture based on Encyclopedia Americana

(1986:vol. 19, p.505),

Like painting, motion pictures present a two dimensional image

within the confines of a frame. Like music, they manipulate their material
within the dimension of time. Like dance, films are choreographed to
utilize space for aesthetic effect. Like literature, many films are based on a
narrative of a story and develop characterization and mood. Like theater,
films for the most part use human actors who are engaged in a
performance. Like poetry, films can convey several levels of meaning
simultaneously.

As stated in Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, film or movie is a

collection set of moving pictures to be shown in television or cinema (Hornby,

1995:434)..

A movie reflects the things that are useful to peoples life and portrays a

clear description about the situation or event that are often made into a film are
related to culture, social events, political issues, personal life, and so on. A movie

also conveys several levels of meaning simultaneously.

Based on definition above, a film has a goal to make the viewers more

understand and catch the meaning of the story in enjoyable a literary work.

Furthermore, it can be concluded that a film is one of literary work in

entertainment that shown in a television or theatres which has a story in

relationship with society which is appeared in a set of moving picture.

2.2.1.2 Genres of Film

When we talked about film, we can not be free from the genre of film. There are

some genres in making movie. Here are the kinds of main film genres.

(1) Documentary Film

Some people like to watch a documentary film that usually present factual

information about anything in the world. As the type of films, documentaries

present themselves as factually trustworthy.

According to Bordwell and Thompson (1997: 44) there are two types of

documentary film. They are: (1) Compilation film; produce assembling images

from archival sources, (2) Direct-Cinema; recording an ongoing event as if

happens, with minimal interference by the moviemaker.

As written in Encyclopedia Americana (1986: vol. 19, p. 516) that the

documenter film deals with facts and seek to provide the spectator with

information. This film of fact records historic and news-worthy events.

By seeing a documentary film, people will get some explanation and learn

about scientific discoveries they needed. This kind of movie is very useful to its

audience in gaining information and develops their knowledge.

(2) Fictional Film

The most entertaining film which is usually watched by all people in this world is

fictional film.
Based on Dave Monahan (2010:78) in his book An Introduction to Film,

fictional film or usually called as narrative film is a film that tells a fictional orr

fictionalized story, event or narrative. In this style of film, believable narratives

and characters help to convince the audience that the unfolding fiction is real.

Lighting, camera movement, among other cinematic elements, have become

increasingly important in these kind of films.

There is some fictional film that usually watched by people, they are (1)

Adventure Films, which is usually, consist of exciting stories. Some people

recognize adventure film as action film because it has many similarities inside.

Adventure films could be searches or expeditions for lost continents, "jungle" and

"desert" epics, treasure hunts, disaster films. (2) Comedy Films, which are light-

hearted plots designed to amuse and provoke laughter. Comedy films often

present funny story which can make the viewer laughs. (3) Drama Films, which

are consist of serious story. Sometimes it needs high concentration to understand

the content of the film. Dramatic films are probably the largest film genre, with

many subsets. (4) Historical Films, or usually called epics film include costume

dramas and historical story. Epics take an historical or imagined event, mythic,

legendary, or heroic figure, and add an extravagant setting and lavish costumes.
From the brief explanation above, fictional film can be said as a film that is

made based on real occurrences. The fictional film carry the understanding that

the filmmaker has the freedom to create story lines and alter historical facts as

h/she sees fit. This freedom allows the director to shape the movie and perfect the

story.

2.2.1.3 Elements of Film

There is close correlation between movie and literary works. In this era, there are

many movies are produced based on drama, novel, myth and etc. Conversely,

movie also influences the development of literary work. Some authors create their

work based on the movie which they had ever seen. Therefore, the existence

between movie and other literary works can not be separated from each other.

Although movie has its own specific characteristic and terminology, it is

possible to analyze it by drawing on method of literary criticism because movie

has close relation to the traditional approaches that is textual studies. Klarer

(1998:57) states that in spite of their differing forms and media, drama and movie

are often categorized under the heading performing arts because they use actors as

their means of expression. Both movie and literary work depend on their

significant element that is character or actor.

As one of the literary works, movie is also supported by its elements in

order to create fantastic and fascinating performance. As stated on Film Art: An

Introduction by Bordwell & Thompson, there are three essential elements of film

in which a film is produced. Those three elements are explained as follows:

(1) Theme
The first element that needs to be decided first before going to make a film is

theme. It is like what Pickering and Hooper (1981:61) defined theme as the

central idea or statement about life that unifies and controls the total work. Theme

is not the issue, problem, or subject with which the work deals, but its the

comment or statement the author makes about the subject as it necessary and

inevitably emerges from the interplay of the various elements of the works.
In the other hand, theme in literary work of fiction can be discovered by

making an analysis and interpretation towards the elements and its every word of

the work. Besides that, we can say that theme of a story in making film will be

revealed through the elements such as plot, characters, setting, atmosphere, style,

and tone.
While, the theme of CJ movie in this research is about bullying, because of

the bullying culture that occurs in the film, the main character who become both

doer and victim of bullying can portrays such social problem through their acting

explicitly.
(2) Plot
The second element that becomes an essential thing to make a good film is

determining the plot. The word plot is in fact a technical term to say about a series

of tied together events in a story.

According to Perrine as quoted by Koesnosoebroto (1998:28) defined the

plot as the sequence of incidents or events of which a story is composed. In the

other hand, the story of the film has been structured that every single word from

the opening scene to the concluding is tied artistically skeleton called plot.
While, the classic plot structure usually divided into three parts, they are:

(a) the beginning, in this part, we are given with some information about

characters, places where they live, situations, and so on. It also introduces some
short of conflict or potential conflict, (b) the middle, it involves the conflict which

is developing and complicating. The conflict reaches its climax when the

complication attains its highest point of intensity, (c) the end, the conflict resides

and concerns to an end in a solution or reconciliation.

From the brief explanation about plot above, the writer can conclude that

in the film CJ7, there are some situations where the characters have some conflicts

in the part of the story. This film has the middle plot and the end plot, it reveals

where the main characters changing his life because his conflict in the middle and

the end plot. His social problem influences his behavior, it emerges in the middle

of the plot and the climax of the film is in the end of the plot.

(3) Characterization
The last point which becomes essential element in making a film is determining

the character in the story

In general characters in film are an imagined person who inhabits a story.

E.M Forster as quoted by Koesnosoebroto (1988:67) derived the characters into

flat and round characters. A flat character is someone who has only one

distinctive characteristic, exists only to exhibit that characteristic, and is incapable

of varying from that characteristic. While a round character is many facts and is

capable of change.
In the film CJ7, the main character that is Dicky, a poor boy who is always

bullied by his rich schoolmate, has a round character. His changing behavior

which is caused by social strata, from a nice poor boy becomes a rough-ambitious

person. That alteration of character is happened as a form of bullying effect that

Dicky experienced in the film.

Referring to the elaboration about a film above, the writer can draw some

conclusions related to the movie of CJ7. First, the genre of this movie is Children

- Kids - Family-Oriented Films. This movie involves childrens characteristic,

behavior, fantasy, childrens power, intimidation, and parents role. Moreover, this

movie also involves two dimensional aspects, good-boy battling bad-boy. Second,

this movie was produced by Sony Pictures Classic and released on March 14,

2008. The last, in relation with the element of a film, CJ7 presented wonderful

sound effect from the beginning until the end of the film. For example, the sound

effects which revealed when the battle of the good-boy and bad-boy began and the

time when the good-boys father died.

2.2.2 Theory of Bullying

As we all know that recently there is a social problem that occurs in the society.

This phenomenon is happened in each rows of society, either in childhood or

adulthood. Almost everyone in this world have experienced it, either as a doer,

victim, or just as a bystander. That serious problem happened in society is called

bullying.

Bullying is a behavior that can only be easily recognized when individuals

experience it. Bullying can happen to anyone at any age and anywhere

whether at school, home, or even in a workplace. So far, it is difficult to define

bullying since it relates to both a wide range behavior that may constitute

bullying, and the characteristics of bullying behavior (Montgomery, 1994, p.3).

However, the most common definitions in use were adopted by Roland (1989) and

Olweus (1992). Roland defines bullying as long standing violence, physical or

psychological, perpetrated by an individual or group directed against

an individual who can not defend himself or herself (p. 21). In line with this

Olweus also defines bullying, but more carefully and restrictive, as repeated,

negative actions over time, including hitting, kicking, threatening, locking

inside a room, saying nasty and unpleasant things, and teasing (p. 413).

Rigby, (2008) suggests that bullying is the systematic abuse of power in

interpersonal relationship (p.22). In other words, bullying is when a person is

picked on over and over again by an individual or group with more power, either

in terms of physical strength or social standing. Rigby argues that the

abuse of power is not restricted only to certain managerial or

authority positions, but that most individuals have the opportunity to

exercise power to control over someone. Thus, there are apparently

imbalances in physical and psychological strength between bully and the victim

(Olweus and Solberg, 1998, p.7).

Regarding the recognition of bullying, Olweus and Solberg, (1998) have

suggested some typical characteristics to recognize bullying behavior. They said

that we generally speak of bullying when one or more persons repeatedly and

over a period of time say or do painful and unpleasant things to someone who

has problems defending himself or herself (p.7). To address the terms painful

and unpleasant experience, Olweus and Solberg refer them as direct bullying

and indirect bullying. They argue that the pain and unpleasantness may be due to

direct bullying involving hitting, kicking, insults, offensive and sneering

comments or threat while indirect bullying, which is just as painful, is the

experience of being socially isolated and excluded from group membership

(Olweus and Solberg, 1998, p. 7).

From the definition above we can conclude that bullying is a serious

problem that occurs in the society, especially in children daily life, so we have to

pay attention more to this case in order to avoid and safe children from the

negative effects caused by bullying.

2.2.2.1 Bullying in school

The phenomenon of bullying in schools has increasingly captured universal

attention among researchers, the media, school authorities, and parents who are

concerned about students well-being and safety. Bullying in schools is also a

worldwide problem that can have negative consequences for the general school

climate and for the rights of students to learn in a safe environment without fear.

Until recently, most bullying researchers have been merely concerned with school

bullying although other contexts of bullying have also been widely researched.

The reason for this is that during school age bullying becomes a common and

daily basis activity among students.

In relation to this, Sampson (2002, p. 2) argues that the most frequently

bullying happens during elementary school and slightly less during middle school

and less so, but still frequently, in the high school.

Many studies have been carried out related to the phenomenon of bullying

in school. Olweus, the first Scandinavian researcher concerned with the issue,

conducted his systematic study in Norwegian and Swedish schools and found that

many students experienced school bullying. The findings showed that

approximately 7% of Scandinavian students in the sample engaged in school

bullying, and between 5% and 15% of students in various grades reported being

bullied (Moon, et. al 2008, p.3) or approximately one in seven pupils are

involved in bullying with the degree of regularity - either as bully or victims

(Olweus, 1993, p.13). Other studies concerning school and bullying also have

been conducted in various countries such as Austria, Canada, China, England,

Italy, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, and found similar or even higher

percentage of samples who engage in bullying (Moon, et. al 2008; Olweus and

Solberg, 1998). By regarding these studies, it is possible to see a consistent

indication that school bullying is becoming a global phenomenon. Although much

of the formal research on bullying in school has taken place in those mentioned

countries, the problems associated with bullying have been noticed and discussed

wherever formal schooling environments exist.

General findings of the phenomenon of school bullying show that bullying

is comprised of direct behaviors such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, and

stealing that are initiated by one or more students against a victim. In addition to

direct attacks, bullying may also be more indirect by causing a student to be

socially isolated through intentional exclusion (Olweus and Solberg, 1998, p.7).

Whether the bullying is direct or indirect, the key component of bullying is that

the physical or psychological intimidation occurs repeatedly over time to create an

ongoing pattern of harassment and abuse (Rigby, 2001, p. 26). To let bullying in

schools continue without any intervention will most probably escalate the

phenomenon to school violence and create a serious risk to students' academic life

and academic performance.

Sullivan et al. (2000:14) mention that the bully will find reasons to bully a

child and that there are no shortages of excuses. Other reasons children are bullied

are due to poverty, physical unattractiveness and behavior. Coloroso (2002:43)

adds to the list of reasons as to why children are targeted and these are: the child

who is new in the particular environment; the child who is the youngest in the

school; the individual who has been traumatized; the individual who is

submissive; the child who is unwilling to fight; the one who is shy, reserved or

sensitive; the child who is fat or thin, short or tall, wear glasses, has black skin

and other physical conditions. These are just many examples of the reasons why a

child is bullied. There are many others, and as was mentioned earlier, nobody is

exempt from the problem of bullying.

All researches on the effects of bullying show how damaging and

destructive it is. Garret (2003:70) mentions that in some cases children do not

survive the effects of bullying. In most situations, victims do survive, but carry

scars for a lifetime.

Due to bullying action that appeared in the society, especially in children

at school environment, the victims of bullying usually experience some negative

effects. Children who are bullied usually suffer physical and psychological harm,

such as wounded, high level of stress and anxiety, losing or failing to develop self-

esteem, experiencing feeling of isolation or becoming withdrawn and depressed,

hesitate in taking social, intellectual, emotional vocational risks as students or

adults, willing to revenge, and the extreme, ultimate response is attempted suicide.

From the explanation above, it is clear enough that bullying phenomenon

which becomes a familiar-social-problem belongs to one of serious problems in

this world that can bring negative effects especially for children psychological

development.

2.2.3 Psychology

The third subchapter of the second chapter is talking about psychology. Each topic

has differences one another whether viewed by its definition. The elaboration of

each topic of the third subchapter will be presented as the following description.

2.2.3.1 The Definition of Psychology

Psychology describes and attempts to explain consciousness, behaviour, and

social interaction. Empirical psychology is primarily to describe human

experience and behaviour as it actually occurs. Psychology would involve the

study of mans invisible world and nothing else. The relation to behaviour could

be studied, and the relation to the brain activity is either, but subjects itself, should

be the study of the mind or soul. They are subjects involving how to alter

thoughts, attitudes and behaviour.

According to Cambridge Advance Learners Dictionary (Elizabeth Walter,

1992: 701), psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and reasons for

peoples behaviour, kinds of mind that people have, which make them think or

behave in a particular way. Davidov (1976:2) also stated that psychology is the

science of behaviour. Another definition about psychology is stated by Hillgard

(1962: 2), psychology is interested in the ways in which behaviour develops in

evolution of the species and the growth of the individual in learning and problem

solving, in the motivation of initiate, sustain, and guide behaviour.

From those definitions of psychology, it can be inferred that psychology is

a study of humans behaviour that has a purpose to provide an understanding of

the mechanism of human activities and adaptation, so that a man might improve

himself.

Psychology is very important in our life. It is used to study humans

behaviour, their development and to solve problems. Psychology is a branch of

philosophy devoted to the study of mind. The mind itself includes consciousness,

sensation, thought, and feeling that will affect humans behaviour.

2.2.3.2 Psychology in Literature

In analyzing this final project, the writer uses some theories related to the topic in

order to answer the statement of problems as stated in the previous chapter. One

of theories that is used in this final project is Psychology in Literature.

According to William Henry Hudson as cited by Hardjana (1991:59),

psychology enters the area of literary criticism through four ways: (1) discussion

about the process of literature creation, (2) psychological analysis of the author

(either as a type or a person), (3) discussion about psychological theories

applicable to the analysis of characters behavior in literary works, and (4) the

influence of literary works on the readers.

As stated above that psychology is a vast field, it grows every time.

Psychology was firstly believed as the clinical theories, now might come to the

field of life, such as industries, law, education and literature as well.

The relation of psychoanalysis and literature can be seen from different

angles. Fellman (as cited by Green, 1996) explains that we normally tend to see

psychoanalysis of the active practice performed upon the passive text.

While literature is considered as a body of language to be interpreted

psychoanalysis is considered as the body of knowledge, whose competence is
called upon to interpret. Psychoanalysis, in other words, occupies the place of
subject, like literature that an object.

That is why Horney as written in Theory of Literature by Wellek and

Warren (1977:90) states that sometimes the novelist can teach us more about

human nature and the psychologist with all of his imagination stated in words.

From the explanation about psychology in literature above, it can help the

writer in determining and analyzing the topic which involves some psychological

point of view in understanding the related problem occurs in the literary work,

which is film.

2.2.3.3 Psychology of Children

This final project is highlighting psychological aspect as an approach to find out

the findings and discussion related to the topic. Moreover, the writer focuses on

psychology of children since the topic is aimed to discuss about the effect of

bullying culture towards children psychological development. So it is necessary to

know about children psychological theory.

According to Chapman and Chambell (1997: 19), they point out that

Children often do wonderful and delightful things. They perform acts bravely,
kindly, honestly, and respectfully. While, other researcher, Marrison (1988: 25)

stated that there are several characteristics of children. They are:

a) Angry d) Happy

b) Fearful e) Curious

c) Jealous f) Selfish

Marrison (1988: 68) also stated the self concept of children is built by the

personal characteristics (emotion and behaviour), motivation, intelligence, and

talents as they unfold.

According to Narramore (1980: 39), children can be categorized as

follows: (a) Easy Children, They tend to have positive response of every new

situation and they are predictable. While (b) Uneasy Children, tend to have

negative response of every new situation and they are unpredictable. These

children are able to act badly because of their uncontrolled emotion.

In addition, Narramore stated that there are several reasons why children

misbehave (1980: 60-138), the first one is because children receive less affection.

Children lacking for affection will feel lonely, worried, unimportant and isolated.

These negative feelings can make children do unpleasant acts, which can hurt

themselves and other people as well. The second reason why children misbehave

is usually they are overconfident. In this case, children may become aggressive

and they think that all their demand should be fulfilled, to compensate for their

weakness and unpretending. Feeling over confident will always cause children to

show-off their ability and underestimate other people especially their peers.

Another reason that leads children misbehave is because they feel bored. Children
who feel tired or have lost interest in their routine activities are able to misbehave

to compensate for their boredom. Furthermore, sometimes they do not realize the

consequences. Besides that, when children in a situation that are discomfort and

unsafe, they usually misbehave. They feel disappointed and threatened because of

their discomfort and unsafe feeling. They will be able to hurt others for what they

feel wrong.

From the explanation above, we can see that children have many different

characteristics. It is included personal characteristic that deals with emotion and

behaviour. Children tend to have positive and negative responses in any situation.

They are sometimes unpredictable and able to act bad behaviour because of their

uncontrolled emotion. Their uncontrolled behaviour tends to cause children

misbehave. In this movie entitled CJ7, the main character Johnny was a superior

boy in the school environment, but he cannot control his power in a good way, so

he becomes rude and abuse his power by doing bullying to his inferior

schoolmate, that is Dicky. Being over confident will always cause children to

show off their ability and underestimate other people. It showed that Johnny was

overconfident because he feels that he has high status as a rich boy in his school,

so he tended to be aggressive child and always want to dominate others.

2.3 Theoretical Framework

Psychoanalysis is the main literary approach I employed in conducting this study.

However, I started the analysis by using the principle in Psychology in Literature

that literature is a reflection of society, a force in society, or simply a part of social

life. As explained by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren in Theory of Literature,

literature represent life, and life is in large measure, a social reality, even though

the natural world and the inner or subjective world of the individual have also

been objects of literary imitation (Welleck and Warren, 1971: 23).

A major principle of Psychoanalysis which was used in analyzing the data

of this study is that there is no central truth because circumstances and time,

which are changeable and sometimes arbitrary, govern the world of the intellect

(Edgar V. Roberts, 2003: 275). This analysis leads to a statement that there is no

one correct interpretation about a work but only interpretations, and every

interpretation have its own validity.

This analysis deals with interpreting a social problem that occurs in a story

of the movie from psychological point of view. This analysis is about to discuss

the effects of bullying culture that are reflected on the main characters

psychological development. The usage of descriptive qualitative method is

applied to compile the data. Also, in order to focus on the related topic, the theory

from Olweus and Solberg are used in the view of classifying and analyzing the

problems which is about bullying, its causing factor, and the effects that brought

towards children whether physically and psychologically.

To get a glance explanation about the topic of this final project along with

the theories that are used, let us see the following chart.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The third chapter deals with method of study which consists of several

subchapters. The first subchapter is the object of the study; it covers the synopsis

of the movie, the second subchapter is the roles of researcher, the third is the type

of the data, the fourth is the procedure of collecting the data, and the last

subchapter is the techniques of analyzing the data

3.1 Object of the Study

The object of this study is a motion picture entitled CJ7. This movie was

directed by Stephen Chow, written in Cantonese, with English subtitles by Mr.

Chow and released by Sony Pictures Classics in March 14, 2008. The duration of

this movie is an hour twenty nine minutes.

3.1.1 Synopsis

Chow is a poor widowed father who works hard as a construction worker. He

lives in a half-demolished house with his son, Dicky. Chow is eager to save up

money to support the education of his son in elite private school. He wants to

ensure that his son future will be better and brighter than his own life. However,

Dicky is constantly bullied by other children especially the wealthy students

because of his poverty, appearance, and his stupidity. He always tries to follow the

values imparted by his father that though they are poor, they do not lie, fight, or
take what isnt theirs. Mr. Chow can barely afford food on the table, let alone

luxuries like electric fan or shoes, but one day his son wanted a sophisticating toy

named CJ1 that his entire schoolmates have.

One day, while at a department store watching television, Dicky begs his

father to buy him a popular robotic toy. Not being able to afford one, Mr. Chow

goes to the junkyard, a place where he usually picks up clothes and other home

appliances for Dicky, and brings home a strange green rubbery ball. He tells

Dicky that it is a new toy better than the robot they saw earlier. Dicky is hesitant

at first, but agrees to keep it. A night later, it turns into a cute cuddly alien that

befriends Dicky. After playing, Dicky falls asleep and dreams the alien, whom he

names CJ7, will help him beat up bullies, get the 100 score on his exam and get

the high grades on physical exercise. The next morning, Dicky decided to bring

CJ7 to school but it turns out his dream was only a dream; he ends up receiving a

zero on his exam, getting humiliated at physical education, and being bullied with

other students just as usual. Feeling disappointed, Dicky tries to throw away the

alien, but when he comes back home, CJ7 has been home first before him. Over

the next day, because of CJ7, Dicky finds new friends at school. It also heals his

father who almost died because an accident in the construction building, the place

where he works. After all its power has used up, CJ7 turns back into an ordinary

green ball and disappear to the space. Dicky was extremely sad because CJ7 has

been gone, but on the other side he was very happy because his father still alive.

Finally, in tears of joy, Dicky promises to his father that he will never give up in

school or in life

3.2 Roles of Researcher

In this analysis the researcher has two main roles. They are as follows:

(1) The data collector

In order to complete this final project the writer collected the data about the film

from the movie in the form of Vision Compact Disk (VCD), from the script of the

film, and also some articles in the internet.

(2) Data analyst

After getting the data, the writer analyzed them then takes the essence of the data.

The writer makes some group from the several data based on the classification.

The writer also reduces the data that the writer gets from the sources in order to

make me easy in analyzing them.

3.3 Type of the Data

The data used in this study were divided into two types: primary data and

supporting references. The primary data were gained from the object of the study;

a film entitled CJ7 which is directed by Stephen Chow. The data were in the form

of scenes, acts, dialogue and visualizations used among the characters. The

supporting references were taken from those related books, journals and articles

gained from library and internet. Both primary data and supporting references

were used for helping the writer in analyzing the data to answer the problems of

study.

3.4 Procedures of Collecting the Data

In this analysis there are two types of data sources. The first source was called

primary source. It was source from which the main data were taken. The object of

the study was CJ7 movie. The second source was called secondary source. It was

the source from which the supporting data were taken. They involved the theory

of bullying, theory of psychology and movie script. Those data were taken from

books, dictionaries and websites. The writer takes some steps in collecting and

analyzing the data, they are, reading and watching, identifying, inventorying,

classifying, selecting and reporting.

3.4.1 Reading and Watching

The very basic step in analyzing a movie is reading and watching. The writer does

not only read the script but also watch the movie. The writer has to find out every

side of it as well as understand the whole content clearly. The process of watching

here functions to synchronize the original dialogue in the script with the dialogue

spoken by the characters in the movie. Even the writer has to read and watch the

movie several times to get deeper ideas which are related to the topic.

3.4.2 Identifying

Here the word identifying means the activity of separating between data and non-

data by marking, underlining, breaking and numbering. The purpose of this

activity was to enable me to review the datum for the inventorying process.

3.4.3 Inventorying

Inventorying means to list all the identified data and put them in a table. The table

consisted of columns data number, scene, the datum (dialogue/quotation), location

(time) and a number of problems to answer. The form of all inventorying data

will be presented as the table bellow:

Table 3.1

No The datum Location Number of problem

(dialogue/quotation) (Time) answer.

3.4.4 Classifying

It means that if each datum has answered of all the statements of problems

classifying is not required. On the contrary, if each datum has not answered all the

statement problems, classifying is required. It means that the inventoried data are

divided into some classifications. This step notes what is so called by classified

data or supposed data. The table of classifying step would be like this.

Table 3.2

Question Number Supporting Data Total

1

3.4.5 Selecting

This step is selecting the classified data by reducing them into several samples. It

can be random sampling or other techniques. The using of the techniques depends

on the data. They must be simplified in order to carry through this study to

analyze. Only relevant data are used to answer the problems. Then, the relevant

data are being emphasized in order to facilitate the study to determine the

indicator.
3.4.6 Reporting

After selecting, the data are then reported in the appendices. The appendices will

help the readers to find out the overall data analysis easily.

3.5 Technique of Analyzing the Data

In this step, the writer used the descriptive method. This method was to reveal the

bullying culture by means of describing, explaining and comparing words based

on the explanation above. The writer did not only report the analysis of the movie

story inside but also showed theories related to the analysis of the movie.

This is qualitative study so the writer analyzed the data qualitatively by

using several steps. The first is exposing the data; they were exposed to reveal the

hidden meaning of the context. The second step was using psychological

approach. It means that the data were analyzed by using the reference or the

theory. Finally, the writer made a conclusion. The answers for the statements of

the problems by using the data were presented in the analysis.

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the study focuses on the analysis of the data. This chapter consists

of three subchapters which become the main answers of the problem statements

stated on the previous chapter. The first is about bullying culture happened in the

movie. The second is the causing factor of bullying, and the last is the effect of

bullying towards children psychological development in film CJ7 directed by

Stephen Chow. The discussion of the bullying phenomenon will be presented as

follows.

4.1 Bullying Culture as Reflected in CJ7 Movie

Film CJ7 which is directed by Stephen Chow contains the bullying culture

committed by the students in the school environment. The culture is portrayed

through the characters of the film and their interpersonal relationship, which are

oppositional among others. In such relationships, the bullying culture is committed

directly and indirectly by some of the characters. The direct and indirect bullying

in the film is expressed in the forms of verbal and physical actions. Below are the

explanations for each of them.

4.1.1 Direct Bullying

In the film, bullying phenomenon is done directly. The direct bullying is done

verbally and physically. They are described as follows.

1) Verbal Bullying

The verbal bullying is reflected in the most of scenes. It is done by the characters

in vertical and horizontal relationships. The horizontal relationship is a

relationship between a person and other in the same level, such as the relationship

between friends. Here is a form of verbal bullying done by some characters in

horizontal relationship, between Johnny and Dicky.

(1) Johnny : The name of this amazing dog is CJ1.

It was developed jointly U.S, French and German
scientists.
Imagine! Jointly developed!
Do you want a go?
Dicky : Yes, please.
Johnny : Back off, loser!
(00:05:59 - 00:06:17)

The dialog indicates that the direct, verbal bullying occurs when the

protagonist, Dicky, a student in an elite private elementary school, is playing with

his classmates. Dicky sees Johnny showing off his new toy during break hour.

Johnny feels disturbed by Dickys presence. He then pushes Dicky away while

saying Back off, loser!. Johnnys action can be considered as verbal bullying

since the word loser uttered by Johnny hurts Dicky.

The word loser can be considered as an unpleasant expression because it

is referred to the inferior people in the contexts of economy, status, etc. When

Johnny calls Dicky loser, Johnny humiliates and hurts Dickys feeling. This

behavior can be considered as verbal bullying done by the students in the school.
The verbal bullying also happens in the horizontal relationship between

Johnny and his classmates. Johnny commits verbal bullying by sneering his

classmates physical imperfection.

(2) Johnny : What are you doing?

Classmate : Eating noodles.
Johnny : Stand up!
No matter how much you eat,
you are doomed to be a dwarf.
Now get lost!
(00:06:27 - 00:06:39)

The dialog occurs in the cafeteria when Johnny is showing off his new,

expensive toy, then suddenly he sees one of his classmates who have imperfect

body. He considers his friends small body as abnormal and deserved to be

ridiculed. As shown in the dialog, Johnny humiliates his little classmate with harsh

words, saying that No matter how much you eat,you are doomed to be a dwarf,

which means a sarcasm that little boy will always be little in size regardless the

amount of his food. Such expression should not be uttered because it is able to

hurt the victim. Such behavior is a form of direct, verbal bullying.

Another example happens between Johnny and Maggie. Johnny commits

verbal bullying on Maggie by humiliating her abnormal body.

(3) Johnny : What have we here, another alien?

What are you doing?
Maggie : Eating rice.
Johnny : Youre just like a huge tub of lard.
Maybe you should go see the doctor.
You eat so much. Its horrible!
Someone call the police to shoot this monster!

(00:06:44 - 00:07:05)
The dialog also happens in the cafeteria. In the break hour, Johnny and his

three followers pass by around Maggie, a girl who has abnormally huge body.

Without reasons, Johnny humiliates Maggie with harsh, painful words. It shows

that a persons imperfect body can be an object of bullying. Maggie is considered

as alien and a huge tub of lard by Johnny. Johnnys utterance Maybe you

should go see the doctor indicates that such person like Maggie is sick and she

must meet a doctor. Such abnormal person does not belong to the normal

community, being a monster so that she must be exiled. Moreover, in that scene

also shows that Johnny conducts such an isolation or discrimination to Maggie,

reflected in his sentence Someone call the police to shoot this monster!. A

person who owns abnormally huge body must be shot down and banished from the

society. In fact, a persons posture is his rights and cannot be ridiculed. Johnnys

repeated negative actions such as humiliating and ridiculing are examples of

direct, verbal bullying.

Verbal bullying is also done by the characters in vertical relationship (up-

down line relationship), for example, when Mr. P.E., the sport teacher, bullies

Dicky.

(4) Dicky : Please, sir. Can I say something?

P.E Teacher : No, you can't.
You are a poor student.
You are always dirty, and you are very wicked.
You discredit the school.
There's nothing more to say.
(00:47:24 - 00:47:59)

The dialog above shows that verbal bullying done in the form of sneering

by Mr. P.E. towards Dicky due to Dickys low intellect. Dicky is not smart in all
subjects. Dickys low intellect becomes Mr. P.Es object to ridicule him. The

teacher uses harsh words such as poor, dirty, and wicked, which indicate

that Dicky is poor, having low intellect, and does not deserve to study in the

private elite school.

2) Physical Bullying

Direct bullying, besides in the form of verbal bullying, may also be in the form of

physical bullying. In the film, the physical bullying is shown by hitting and

offence. Such forms of physical bullying are described as follows.

(1) Hitting
The example of physical bullying by hitting that occurs in CJ7 movie is revealed

in the following dialog.

(5) Johnny : What are you doing?
Classmate : Eating noodles.
Johnny : Stand up!
No matter how much you eat,you are doomed to be
a dwarf.
Now get lost!
(00:06:27 - 00:06:39)

During break hour, the students spend their time in the cafeteria for lunch.

Johnny enters the cafeteria and sees one of his friends who is having lunch. He

suddenly approaches him, humiliates with loud voices and then hit his head using

his fist. Johnnys action belongs to physical bullying because such violence is

intentionally done to hurt the victim. The victim has abnormally little body so he

receives such bad treatment from Johnny. Being helpless, the victim escapes by

leaving the cafeteria desperately.

(2) Offence
Besides hitting, physical bullying in the film is also manifested in offence. The

following dialog shows how offensive actions are done to bully someone.

(6) Johnny : You! Stop!

What's that thing inside your bag?
Dicky : Nothing.
Johnny : I need to check your schoolbag!
Dicky : Give it to me! Don't pull!
Johnny : Get it!
What is this weird thing?
Dicky : Don't touch it!
Give it back to me!
(00:55:06 - 00:56:09)

In the morning on his way to the classroom, Dicky is stopped by Johnny

and the gang. Johnny is curious about the content of Dickys bag. Yet, Dicky

refuses to let him know and keeps walking. As the result, Johnny and his gang go

after Dicky and try to take his bag by force. Such action consists of physical

contact, that is, how the students pull Dickys hands violently. Johnny attacks

Dicky because he wants Dickys toy, CJ7. CJ7 is a unique animal from the outer

space which has super power, superior to Johnnys CJ1. Jonnys violent action

shows that he disturbs Dickys rights and freedom. Such violent action belongs to

physical bullying.

4.1.2 Indirect Bullying

Besides direct bullying, indirect bullying can also be found in the film, by making

the victim suffer psychologically. Indirect bullying is done by discriminating the

victim.

The indirect bullying done by discriminating the victim in the film is reflected in

the following dialog.

(7) Dicky : Bullies! Heroes don't hit women.
Johnny : Oh, you again!
Ignore him!
Go away, poor boy!
We don't want you around!

(00:07:21 - 00:07:29)
The dialog happens when Dicky tries to defend Maggie who is being

bullied by Johnny. Dicky does so because he understands Maggies feeling as the

victim of bullying. But Dickys effort means nothing to Johnny. It does not make

Johnny stop to commit bullying. Due to his arrogance, Johnny tries to isolate

Dicky. His action is based on Dickys social status as the poor boy. It is reflected

in his utterance Go away, poor boy! We dont want you around!. Johnnys

utterance shows that he does not want Dicky around and tries to isolate him from

the other students.

The bullying phenomenon is clearly illustrated from scene to scene in the

film CJ7 directed by Stephen Chow. The repeated, violent actions are done in the

forms of direct bullying and indirect bullying. The examples of direct bullying are

verbal abuses, such as humiliating, ridiculing and sneering with harsh, painful

words. Besides that, direct bullying can also be in the form of physical bullying,

such as hitting and offence. Bullying can also be indirect, such as discriminating

and isolating the victim to make him suffer. In film CJ7, many acts of bullying

both directly and indirectly are done in the school, involving the students as the

doer and the victim.

4.2 Factors Leading to Bullying

There are many factors that lead somebody to commit bullying. They are social

standing, abusive power, and physical strength. Each factor is explained as

follows.

4.2.1 Social Standing

The first factor leading to bullying is social standing. The social standing can be

determined by wealth status. In society, someone who has a remarkable wealth

tends to be placed on a special and privileged status. Such status may encourage

him to be arrogant and humiliate to other people.

In film CJ7, the portrait of high social status by wealth is reflected on the

character named Johnny, the rich boy. He owns a super sophisticated robot toy

which symbolizes his existence in the school environment where someone who

owns such toys will be acknowledged by the society as rich folks. Conversely, the

children who cannot afford to buy such expensive toys are ignored,

underestimated, and considered as a loser by the society, especially in the school

environment.

(8) Johnny : Do you want a go?

Dicky : Yes, please.
Johnny : Back off, loser!
(00:06:13 - 00:06:17)
The dialog above happens when Johnny and Dicky along with other

classmates are in the cafeteria. Dicky who is walking in front of Johnny is blocked

by him. Johnny gets in Dickys way when Dicky wants to go someplace. Johnny

forbids Dicky to go further and says back off, loser!. Calling Dicky as a loser in

the film CJ7 indicates that Johnny, the antagonist, considers himself superior to
others. Such superior feeling is originated from the high social statuses which are

owned by him.

Losers represent the poor, that is, the people who are in the lower level of a

community or being called as inferiors. Calling someone loser indicates the

determination of ones social status by wealth. Johnny is considered as a rich boy

while Dicky is poor and deserve to be called losers.

Johnny thinks he is superior so that he has the right to get permission from other

students who attempt to pass by the place where he is sitting. Dicky is hit by his

classmate because Dicky, as a loser, is assumed to deserve such bad treatment.

Besides that, based on the CJ7 movie, the loser is unwanted and tends to be

discriminated by the superior group. It can be seen in the script We dont want

you around that is said by Johnny, as a superior person, to Dicky, as an inferior

one.

From the phenomena in film CJ7, it can be seen that Stephen Chow, the

director, presents the facts that there is no equality in this world. A person who has

power like the rich boy tends to treat others based on their social backgrounds.

Status becomes symbol of existence so that people will fight for it in the society.

To fight for it, people tend to develop conflict-based interpersonal relationship

where one will always see the other as an opponent, not a friend or partner

(Bateson, 1987). Such phenomenon can be found in film CJ7 where the rich boy

sees Dicky as an opponent in having the super sophisticated toys. The rich boy

will not let Dicky win, so when Dicky has a new toy, he will feel threatened.

Unable to accept defeat, then, he will bully Dicky.

4.2.2 Abusive Power

The second factor leading to bullying is the abuse of power (Rigby, 2008).

According to Rigby, the abuse of power is encouraged by the authority position

and the chance for controlling someone in a community. In film CJ7, there is a

bullying phenomenon caused by Johnnys abuse of power. In the interpersonal

relation in school, Johnny has high authority position. The people place Johnny in

the high position because Johnny has a great amount of wealth, so that he is

known as the rich boy. With his power, Johnny tends to behave recklessly

towards others. He is also bossy; he has made his three classmates as his

henchmen. Consider to this dialog.

(9) Johnny : What have we here, another alien?

What are you doing?
Maggie : Eating rice.
Johnny : You're just like a huge tub of lard.
Maybe you should go see the doctor.
You eat so much. Its horrible!
Someone call the police to shoot this monster!
(00:06:44 - 00:07:05)

The dialog happens when Johnny and his three followers are in the school

cafeteria. There they meet their friend named Maggie who has extraordinarily

huge body and is having her lunch. In that scene Johnny is bullying her with

unpleasant and painful words. Then, Johnny commands his followers to attack

Maggie by saying Someone call the police to shoot this monster!. Immediately,

the three follow his command by throwing their snacks on Maggie.

In the scene above it can be seen that Johnny abuses his authority to

control other people, in this case three classmates who become Johnnys followers
to bully other students. Johnny uses his leadership in the wrong way; he uses it to

control others wrongly and disproportionately so it becomes the main factor

leading to bullying.

In the film CJ7, Stephen Chow portrays the abuse of power committed by

Johnny to Dicky, the victim of bullying, by performing domination. In an

interpersonal relationship, the dominating attitude towards others happens often.

In the interpersonal relationship with Dicky, Johnny tends to dominate Dicky by

doing violence and imposition of the will.

(10) Johnny : You! Stop!

What's that thing inside your bag?
Dicky : Nothing.
Johnny : I need to check your schoolbag!
Dicky : Give it to me! Don't pull!
Johnny : Get it!
What is this weird thing?
Dicky : Dont touch it!
Give it back to me!
(00:55:06 - 00:56:09)

The piece of dialog above happens when Johnny stops Dicky who is

walking alone through the school yard. Johnny wants to know the content of

Dickys bag. Since Dicky rejects his demand, Johnny tries to take the bag by force

with the help of his followers. Such violent action indicates that the doer (Johnny)

has tendency to dominate by taking others belonging (Dickys) by force.

Johnny feels threatened as Dicky has a new toy called CJ7, an alien which

has super power. Johnnys feeling makes him perform violence, that is, taking

others belonging by force. Such act of domination happens when someone who

has authority power mentioned in 4.2.1 abuses his power for committing bullying.
4.2.3 Physical Strength

The third factor leading to bullying is physical strength. According to Rigby

(2008), physical strength is a physical power which is possessed by a person to

perform an action or to do something. A person with greater physical strength

tends to abuse it on other people.

The abuse of physical power reflected in film CJ7 is as follows:

(11) Johnny : So, what is it called?

Dicky : Its called CJ7
Johnny : Pathetic piece of crap!
Your dad found it in the garbage
Dicky : Dont talk about my dad like that!
Im going to beat you up!
Johnny : Oh yeah?
[Blow the whistle, call the Storm Dragon]

(00:23:53 00:24:11)

The dialog above occurs in the school yard as Johnny and his three

followers stops Dicky who is passing through the yard holding a green ball in his

hand. Johnny is very curious about the thing that Dicky brings. Then Dicky

explains to Johnny about his new toy, named CJ7 which is far more superior to

Johnnys toy, called CJ1. Feeling threatened, Johnny humiliates Dicky by saying

that his CJ7 is a mere junk taken from the dump. Annoyed by that, Dicky prepares

to hit Johnny, but Johnny manages to use his whistle, summoning his big, strong

follower named Storm Dragon. Johnny has a higher authority so he can command

the big fellow to attack Dicky. Immediately, Strom Dragon beats and throws

Dicky, making Dicky drop on the bushes and receives scars. Storm Dragon, who is
physically bigger than Dicky, has a great power and strength but he abuses his

physical strength to bully Dicky, the little and weak one.

Another case that shows abuse of physical strength in the CJ7 movie is

presented bellow.

(12) Johnny : What are you doing?

Classmate : Eating noodles.
Johnny : Stand up!
No matter how much you eat,
you are doomed to be a dwarf.
Now get lost!
(00:06:27 - 00:06:39)

The dialog above happens in the cafeteria between Johnny and his

schoolmate. Johnny is insulting his schoolmate who is physically imperfect and

has small body by saying No matter how much you eat, you are doomed to be a

dwarf, while slapping his head. That violence action is conducted by Johnny

towards his schoolmate because Johnny feels that he has physical strength than the

dwarf or little boy. Johnny thinks that the dwarf, who has small body, is weak

and powerless so the dwarf will not be able to defeat him.

In this case, someones great strength, if it is not properly used, would

harm others. Someone who misuses his physical strength is prone to commit

violence to the other one who is weak or powerless.

Film CJ7 depicts how someone who misuses his physical strength has

inclination to commit bullying towards the weak. As the director, the producer, and

also the screenwriter of film CJ7, Stephen Chow presents the factors that motivate

someone to commit bullying namely social standing, abuse of power, and physical
strength. Those factors are indirectly related because if they are misused, then the

act of domination will be easily committed. In the film, the three factors are

exerted by a student towards others so that they become the causes of bullying in

the elementary school setting.

4.3 Effects of Bullying Culture towards Childrens Psychological

Development

Bullying may incur negative effects on the victims both physically and

psychologically, especially when the victims are children. The effects of bullying

on the children are described as follows.

4.3.1 Physical Harm

The picture above shows that Dicky becomes the victim of bullying done by his

classmate, the Storm Dragon. The event begins as Dicky and Johnny are playing in

the school yard. Johnny humiliates Dicky by calling Dickys toy is a junk taken

from the dump by his father. Dicky gets angry and tries to beat Johnny. However,

Johnny quickly blows the whistle, calling his huge henchman named the Storm
Dragon to beat Dicky. The Storm Dragon then squeezes Dickys hand and throws

him down to the bushes. Dicky is injured because of that. Such violent bullying

clearly gives negative effect for the victim, Dicky, in the form of injuries on his

body.

4.3.2. Psychological Harm

Bullying does not only causes physical harm, but also psychological harms such as

stress and anxiety, experiencing feeling of isolation, and willing to revenge (Garret

2003:70). Based on the quotation above, each effects of bullying will be going to

be elaborated as follow.

4.3.2.1 Stress and anxiety

Bullying may incur stress and anxiety towards the victims. In CJ7, such negative

effects are experienced by Maggie, one of the victims bullied by Johnny.

Figure 4.1. Maggies expression of stress because she had been bullied by Johnny.

(13) Johnny : What have we here, another alien?

What are you doing?
Maggie : Eating rice.
Johnny : Youre just like a huge tub of lard.
Maybe you should go see the doctor.
You eat so much. Its horrible!
Someone call the police to shoot this
monster!
Maggie : [sobbing]
(00:06:44 - 00:07:05)

The dialog occurs when Johnny and his three followers bully Maggie, the

big girl, with harsh words in the cafeteria. Johnny calls Maggie with words such as

alien, a huge tub of lard, and also monster, which feel so painful for

Maggie. Johnnys action, which can be considered as verbal bullying, makes

Maggie feel depressed, expressed by Maggies hysterical crying and rushing away

from the boys. Maggies response is caused by her anxiety and fear of being

bullied again by Johnny and his followers.

4.3.2.2 Experiencing Feeling of Isolation

The act of bullying may incur discomfort and insecurity on the victims. Because of

such negative states, the victim often feels isolated and marginalized by the

community and the environment.

In CJ7, the act bullying inducing the victims feeling of isolation is done by

Johnny towards Dicky.

(14) Dicky : Bullies! Heroes don't hit women.

Johnny : Oh, you again!
Ignore him!
Go away, poor boy!
We don't want you around!

From the dialog it can be seen that the act of bullying belongs to verbal

bullying, committed by Johnny towards Dicky. Because of that, Dicky feels

isolated. Johnny indirectly isolates Dicky since Dicky is the poor boy and thus

does not belong to Johnnys group, the rich and superior. The expression loser

that Johnny uttered also indicates that the called is meant to be isolated. Johnnys

bullying psychologically induces Dickys inferior feeling. Such negative feeling

makes Dicky not confident and feels isolated from the society. Dickys inferior

feeling is reflected on Dickys inclination to imagine himself become a rich boy

and has super power so that he can be accepted in the school environment which is

mostly filled by the riches. Dickys imagination is a compensation for his feeling

of isolation caused by Johnny. Dicky imagines that he owns super power and thus

he is very confident in building relationship with Johnny, his superior classmate.

But the reality is absolutely different to Dickys imagination. In fact, Dicky has

little space/rights to perform his activities well just like his other friends. It is also

forbidden for Dicky to build relationship with others, such as Fanny, the girl

adored by Johnny and Dicky. Johnny forbids Dicky to interact with Fanny because

he thinks Dicky is just a poor boy and cannot interact with the riches. From the

event it can be seen that Johnny tries to isolate Dicky.

4.3.2.3 Willing to revenge

The next negative effect of bullying is the will for revenge. Such negative feeling

occurs due to a conflict or bullying. In the film, such feeling is reflected in Dicky.

Dicky becomes vengeful on Johnny since he and Maggie have been bullied by

him. When Maggie is being bullied like he was, Dicky stands and fights for her.

See the following dialog.

(15) Johnny : What have we here, another alien?
What are you doing?
Maggie : Eating rice.
Johnny : You're just like a huge tub of lard.
Maybe you should go see the doctor.
You eat so much.It's horrible!
Someone call the police to shoot this
monster!
Dicky : What are you doing?
Bullies! Heroes dont hit women.

The dialog shows how Dickys vengeful feeling occurs when he sees

Maggie being bullied like he was. When his suppressed anger finally bursts out, a

person tends to bully back the person who bullied him before. In CJ7, Dicky is

involved in a fight with his classmates because he is very angry and vengeful

towards Johnny. His expression What are you doing? can be considered as

Dickys vengeance on Johnny. Such action shows that Dicky is tired of being

bullied by Johnny. Moreover, Dickys calling Johnny Bullies! emphasizes that

Dicky can do exactly what Johnny did in him which is saying harsh and painful

words. In this case, Dickys vengeful feeling as the victim of Johnnys bullying is

realized by spontaneous and uncontrolled actions such as humiliating with harsh

words, launching physical attacks, etc.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

The last chapter includes two subchapters. They are conclusions and suggestions.

Conclusion of the data analysis is presented in the first subchapter as the summary

of the final project and the second subchapter presents some suggestions that may

be useful for the readers.

5.1 Conclusion

Based on the analysis in the previous chapter, the writer presents the conclusion

related to the bullying culture reflected in the film CJ7 and the effects of bullying

to the childs psychological development.

There are two types of bullying that can be found in CJ7 film, i.e. direct

and indirect bullying. Direct bullying can be done directly and indirectly. Direct

and indirect bullying can be done both verbally and physically. Bullying is done

by people who have superiority in social, economical, and physical aspects. On

the other hand, people who are lack of superiority in those aforementioned aspects

are always being bullied. In CJ7 film, a person who is superior is represented by

Johnny and his group of friends, while a person who is lack of superiority is

represented by Dicky. Johnny, in the film, does bullying to Dicky both verbally

and physically since Johhny is superior than Dicky.

There are many factors which motivate a person for doing bullying, i.e.

social standing, power abuse, and physical strength. People who have an

outstanding social status in a society often use their status for bullying other since
social status gives them power. They do bullying toward other people to prove

their existence in a social life. Power that is possessed by superior people is often

used abusively. Another factor causing bullying is physical strength. People who

have physical strength often bully somebody else who is physically weak. In CJ7

movie, there can be found a great example of factors causing bullying. Johnny

who possesses great power and social standing as a rich boy always does bullying

toward Dicky, the looser. The example of bullying motivated by physical strength

is done by the Storm Dragon towards Dicky. He bullies Dicky by attacking Dicky

physically by dumping him.

Bullying causes negative effects for its victim both physically and

psychologically. Physically bullying causes physical harm while psychologically

bullying causes psychological harm like stress, feeling isolation, and willing to

revenge.

CJ7 film is a great film which depicts the real childrens life world. By

watching this film, people especially parents can know that bullying phenomenon

happen not only to adult but also to children.

5.2. Suggestion

This study is hopefully can be useful for the students of English department and

for readers in general. For the student of English department who is going to have

a research in the same topic, it is better to provide an alternative meaning by using

another approach.
By analyzing the literary work in the form film entitled CJ7, the writer

suggests for the readers in general for being aware toward bullying phenomena

happened to children so that hopefully bullying can be minimized later on.

SYNOPSIS OF THE CJ7 MOVIE

Finally, in tears of joy, Dicky promises to his father that he will never give up in

school or in life.
