Question 5

This candidate was awarded full marks.

The candidate produced a correctly labelled diagram of the software development life cycle (SDLC) with
all the stages properly sequenced. For each of the three tools given, the candidate specified the stage
that it would be most appropriately used and how it is used. In addition, a full explanation of the
importance of training of users (or operators) in the SDLC process was also provided.

Question 3

The candidate performed outstandingly providing the quality of response expected

at the CAPE level.

The candidate provided a clear definition of the Internet and fully explained two
of the three
telecommunication terms. An incorrect explanation of modulation was presented.
Modulation is in fact
the conversion of digital to analogue signals. Instead, the candidate defined the reverse
process (i.e.,
analogue to digital) which is known as demodulation,

In part (b), the candidate presented a correctly labelled diagram with the approp
riate directional arrows
to support the explanation of the concept of automated information processing. Overall,
the candidate
showed sound knowledge of the role of the Internet and in explaining the compo
nents of automated
information processing.

Module 2

Question S

Overall, the candidates response to this question was of a very high

quality.

Part (a) was the only portion of the question for which marks were lost.
The candidate provided a
definition for a Data Flow Diagram (DFD) but failed to comment on
its usefulness. This response could
have been improved by including that the usefulness of the DFD comes
from the fact that it models the
behaviour of the existing or proposed systems to developers and stakeh
olders such as users and
managers.

In parts (b) and (c), the candidate correctly identified the four symbo
ls that are used in a DFD and
produced an accurate model of the DFD based on the given scenar
io. The major entities and major data
flows were included in the diagram and all symbols were properly named
in accordance with their
naming conventions.

Question 9

The candidates response reflected a sound understanding of the

concepts of algorithms, flow
charting and programming as problem-solving strategies.

In part (a), the candidate only identified two of the three progra
mming paradigms and provided
two examples. To gain full marks in this portion of the question, the
candidate could have
identified other paradigms such as Functional (e.g. Haskell Python
), Declarative (e.g. Prelog,
SQL) or Scripting (e.g. Unix, Linux).

In part (b), the candidate fully explained the benefit of developing

an algorithm prior to writing
program code.

The candidate produced a flowchart that contained all the steps,

but that included the
following two incorrect statements: (n = n + n) and n/k. The correct
statements should have
been, Sum sum + n and Average = sum/k, that is, another variabl
e should be used to store
the total of scores entered.

In part (d), the candidate correctly identified the type of error based
on the given scenario. In
addition, a valid cause of the error and a solution for correcting
each of the errors was
provided.
