CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

This chapter will give an overview for the research of the Ineffective
Communication Skill and Improvisation towards Quality Ship Operation This
chapter also will discuss on research objective, problem statement, research
question and limitation of research.

1.2 Background

This Research is about the poor communication skill and the outcome of
this problem towards the ship operation. Besides that, this research also explore
the improvisation method to improve the quality of ship operation by improving
the communication skill.
From the past until the recent years, the communication method is keep
on changing as the technology grows. Previously messages has been passed
from one ship to another by shouting, or sending a small boat to physically carry
a message. Then slowly the standardized signal codes comes into use follows
by the colored square flags plus with number to deliver message. Latest
technology being used is the wireless telegraphy(WT), radiotelephony(RT), and
satellite communications (single side band) transmitters, walkie-talkie sets, VHF
and FM receivers, transceivers, telex, fax, satcoms and computer displaying
digital data arc found on almost every modern ship.
All this communication method is very essential either to communicate
between ship crew in ship and shore. The use of this communication medium is
to send and receive information which is very vital in ship operation. English is
the number 1 language used onboard vessel as communication as well as
documentation. Todays ship personnel and shore workers lack of English
communication skills has lead ship operations to massive disaster.
Exploring the method of improving communication skill onboard ship
personnel not only will improve the quality of ship operation but also will
contribute towards many aspects such as overcoming loneliness onboard
vessel.

1.3 Proposal Objectives

The objectives of this proposal are:

i. To identify lack of communication skill onboard vessel.

ii. To describe method in improving communication skill onboard vessel.
iii. To analyses the outcome of quality ship operation.

1.4 Problem Statement

The method of identifying ineffective communication skill and describing

the method in improving communication skill onboard vessel is very broad and
difficult. There are many problems which revolve under this research, which is

i. How improper English education structure of maritime academy

effects communication onboard?
ii. What are the safety problem arise from improper communication?
iii. What are the consequences arise from poor documentation?
iv. How can the quality of ship operation improved by good
communication skill?
v. How stress, loneliness and homesick can be avoid by improving
communication skill?

1.5 Research Questions

 In the improvisation of communication skill onboard ship, there are a few
inquiry that should be consider for improving ship operation quality, for that
reasons this question will used as a guidelines to collect the data for research
and analysis.
i. What are the factors that can influence quality of ship operation?
ii. How proper communication skills can help contribute towards quality
ship operation?
iii. How proper communication skill used to avoid stress, homesick and
loneliness?

1.6 Significant of Research

This research can help not only the shipping industry but also maritime
industry in many aspects. Certainly the current situation of many accident for
examples, ship Collison and the previous Exxon Valdes dumped 250,000
barrels of oil into Prince William Sound is mainly due to the communication
error. Therefore, by doing this research, it can be solution to avoid maritime
accident to occur. Besides that, the few methods which suggested in this
research can be used by future student to do research on one specific method
to increases the value of this research.

1.7 Scope of Research

The scope of this research are based on:

 i. Focus on the ineffective communication skill onboard vessel.
ii. Focus in describing the method in improving communication skill
onboard vessel to overcome the quality of ship operation.

1.8 Expected Outcome

The expected outcome of this research are:

i. Able to identify the ineffective communication skill onboard vessel.

ii. Able to prove this method of improvising can lead to better ship
operation.

1.9 Limitation of Researches

For the researchers, having a constraint or limitation is the one thing that
cannot be tolerated. The limitation is biggest challenge in completing this
research. The limitation of this research are as below:

i. Limitation on time constraint.

For this project, only have 14 weeks per semester to complete the 6
chapters, the scope of this research is so huge and to collect data
directly from ship personnel is difficult and needs more time because
the vessel only will long side on a port for short time. During long side,
loading or discharge process will take place and the ship personnel will
be very busy to share information.

ii. Limitation on financial

The financial is one of the factor contributes the successfully of the

proposal. The lack of financial resources also can affect the progress of
the proposal for example in travelling to get the data of report.
iii. Limitation of information

Information are very important in the research, without the data,

researcher cannot make an analysis on the subject require like
problem issues.
