Read Are You A Snail? book to students.
Pair-Share body parts they remember from book.
Let students know they will be making their own snails out of clay.
Review expectations for directed art and confirm understanding through group
response.
THROUGH
Advise students to remove clay from bags and break into two equal parts. Students
to show one section in each hand. Teacher directs students to put one of the pieces
back in the bag.
Roll one clay piece into a cylinder approximately the length of their hand. Create a
spiral shape with clay. Set aside.
Using other piece of clay, roll piece into a cylinder approximately the length of
their hand.
Use their fingernail to add a mouth shape to one end of the shape.
Add 2 pipe cleaner pieces above the mouth for antennas. Using glue sticks, students
add eyes to the pipe cleaners.
Place spiral shape on top of the cylinder piece to represent the shell.
Add student initials to the bottom of snail using pencil tip.
Set on back table to air dry.

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance
After clay has dried (the following day), students will use tempera paints to paint
sculptures.
