Boundaries between recreation and tourism are indistinct, as both activities often
share the same environments and facilities and compete for space and finance
(Baud-Bovey and Lawson 2002) therefore, it is hard to draw a line where
recreation ends and tourism starts. When not talking about statistics then it is also
not so important. It is important to understand that both try to save environment
and use it as sustainable as possible but by doing so, there is some effect on the
environment. Also, both have main target groups locals and tourists. Both groups
can use and benefit from facilities developed in the area. While tourism is the
commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest,
recreation is activity done for enjoyment when one is not working. The two terms
are quite similar. Tourism and recreation however, both have effects on the
physical environment. For example, the West Indian Goa a study showing the
effects of tourism in that area- situated on the west coast of India, approximately
400km south of Mumbai demonstrates the effects of tourism and recreation.
The number of tourists/ visitors in Goa now exceeds 100 million annually and
approximately 20% are from overseas. With this increasing number of visitors,
provisions are made to accommodate such numbers like the chopping down of
trees to build lodges and luxury hotels with pools and gardens to accommodate
these numbers while this might destroy natural habitats for animals reduce oxygen
supply and in turn puts pressure on the environment. Another effect on the
environment is the construction of factories and other plants which feed
waste/pollutants as outputs into nearby rivers/lakes which can cause eutrophication
and kill animal life in the water. Also, there is the removal mangroves which act as
a natural barrier from storms. Therefore, when the mangrove is removed the surge
water will come up and erode the land. In Goa, more people means an increased
number in the digging of holes for waste. Where digging too deep, into the water
table can pollute groundwater. Which would no longer be useful.
