Students Engagements - Spring 2017

I decided to take four engagements that I took part in this semester, mainly because just
talking about one would be bland and I can explain all four which would give variety.
My first one is The Navigators. I joined The UNI Navs in the fall, but have been actively
involved since then into the spring semester. We have large group meetings on Thursday nights
in the Schindler Education building, go to church, either Prairie Lakes or Trinity Bible on Sunday
mornings, and my small group meets Thursday evening in one of our rooms before the large
group. I also have a one-on-one with my study leader Wednesday morning in Rialto over
breakfast. We dive into Gods word and explore different aspects of the scripture, along with
worship and share the gospel.
For my second engagement, I chose the Sons and Daughters Retreat. The was hosted
by The Navigators. We traveled to Hidden Acres, which is near Dayton, where others students
around Iowa also involved in the Navs, came together for a weekend retreat. During this we
played games, worshipped, studied Gods word, and opened up our lives to each other. They
specifically split the men and women at the start of the weekend, so we would not see each
other. This was so we could dive deeper into each other as men and women in Christ.
For my third engagement, I chose the rock climbing competition. I didnt actually climb in
this competition, however I went to support my friends who were in it. This was the 15th annual
rock climbing competition, and students from different universities came to compete against
each other. The theme for the competition was superhero, so natural I came in a banana
costume. I didnt really fit the dress code, but it was fun to go and cheer on my friends who were
competing. My friends who completed all did very well, and it was a great experience for them.
My fourth engagement is the RodCon. This was at Rod Library, and featured artists,
panelists, games, crafts, comics and more. I went with my friend (who is a bit nerdier than I) and
we both enjoyed it quite a bit. This was the fourth annual RodCon held. It was cool to see
various artists work and different artwork being displayed. We also specifically went to a event
there where we listened to a person tell us about graphic designing and his experience with it.
All of these engagements helped me to get involved and make connections on campus,
as well as grow school pride. Also, these engagements gave me, at some level, a chance to use
attributes such as leadership and creativity, and these are important for my major I am studying.
I greatly enjoyed all of the events that I attended this year and I hope to participate in activities
and programs much like these next year.
