ofthelocationoftheschool.Becauseofthis,alotofthe
childrenareaccustomedtoandhaveknowledgeofthe
responsibilitiesandtasksthatfarmersandtheirfamilieshaveto
takeon.Inrelationtothis,alotofthestudentsdemonstratedan
interestinandknowledgeofhuntingandfishingaswell.One
examplethatIvividlyrememberwasastudentinformingme
thatshewasextremelyexcitedbecausethatday,aftershewas
pickedupfromschool,herfamilywasgoingtobeslaughtering
pigs.Thisexperiencetaughtmethatthesestudentshavevery
differentknowledgebasethanIdidasakid.Thefactthatalot
ofthemliveonfarmsandareinfluencedandimpactedbythings
suchasthepossibleeconomicstrainsshowhowthehousehold
laborhistoriesofthemembersoftheirfamiliesdoimpactthem
andtheknowledgethattheypossessinregardstocomingfroma
farmingfamilyandhavingtheoutdoorsbesuchabigpartof
theirlivesinregardstohunting,fishing,whattheydointheir
sparetimeoutsideetc.
SkillSets:TheskillsetsthatIfocusonwhileatmytimeat
Ridgewaymostlyconsistedofthestudentsacademicskills.
Eventhoughmyfieldexperiencewasatanafterschool
program,therewasstillsettimeforthestudentstoworkon
theirhomeworkduringdesignatedhomeworktimes.Whenthis
wouldoccur,ImostoftenwentwithMissSandytoworkwith
thekindergartenandfirstgraders.Duringthistime,Igotto
observethestudentsreadingskillsetsintheirreading.Isaw
themworkontheircitewordsaswellastheirreading,fluency
andcomprehension.Mostofthestudentsoutsideofschoolskill
setsrelatedtotheactivitiesthatthestudentswereapartofwhich
iswhyImostlyfocusedontheiracademicskillsthatIsaw
present.
Experiences:Ithinkthatthefundofknowledgecategoryof
experienceisextremelybroad.Iobservedtwoexamplesthat
Ithinkrelatetotheeffectofastudentsexperienceontheir
educationalsuccess.ThefirstdealswithStudentAwhowasa
firstgradeboywhostruggledwithaggressivebehaviorand
problemswithtakingdirectionsfromtheleadteachersinthe
afterschoolprogram.Becauseofthisbehavior,theteachers
foundthatonethingthatreallycalmedhimdownandthathe

enjoyedwaspuzzles.Thismademethinkabouthowthis
studentsexperiencewithsolvingpuzzleshasanimpactonhow
hebehaveswithintheafterschoolprogram.Thesecondand
moreprominentexampleofwhatIobservedatRidgewayin
regardstostudentexperiencewasthattwoofthestudentsthere
(abrotherin5thgradeandasisterinkindergarten)losttheir
mothertocancerthatschoolyear.Thekindergartenstudenttold
mewhileontheplaygroundandwhenIbroughtituptothe
headteachersafteralltheotherstudentshadleft,Iwastoldthat
thiswasthecaseandthattheolder5thgradestudentwas
strugglingimmenselywithbehaviorwithinschool.Hewas
actingoutinclass,resistingtheauthorityoftheteacherandhis
gradeswereslipping.Becauseofhavingtogothroughthis
traumaticexperienceofloosinghismotherandhavingtoadjust
tohisnewhomelifewithoutherthere,hewasnowstrugglingin
hiseducationalsetting.
Activities:Whileatmyfieldexperience,Inoticedthatalotif
notallofthestudentsparticipatedinextracurricularactivities
outsideofschool.Evenifstudentsdidnotparticipateinthese
activitiesoutsideofschool,theystillwereapartofclubsinside
ofschoolorduringtheafterschoolprogram.Alotofthekids
participatedinsportsoutsideofschool.Notonlydothese
studentsenjoythesesportsbuttheyarealsolearningalotof
importantthingsthattheycantakewiththem,astheygrow
older.Theynotonlylearntheimportanceofhavingdiscipline
andpracticingbuttheyalsolearnaboutsportsmanshipand
followingrules.Beingapartoftheseactivitiescangreatly
impacttheirsuccessinthefuture.Theylearnhowtoworkwith
teammatesandtakedirectionsfromcoaches.Evenstudentsin
musicprogramsorhaveafterschoolpianopracticesorchoir
rehearsalsarebenefittingimmensely.Duringtheafterschool
programIgottowitnessandbeapartofdanceclub.The
studentswhowantedtoparticipate(whichincludedbothboys
andgirls)wouldgettogetherandlearnedaseriesofdancesteps
toasong.Theyworkedasateamandlearnedtopreformthe
stepstothedance.Activitiessuchasthesearegreat
opportunitiesforstudentstobroadentheirknowledgebasesand
gainskillsthatwillhelpthemintheirfuturesuccesses.

ConstructivistLearningTheory:Theconstructivistlearning
theoryiscanbeusedtoexplainhowlearnersmakeuseofthe
possessedknowledgebasesbecauseitdealswithhowpeople
learnandthenatureofknowledge.Constructivismreferstothe
ideathatlearnersorstudentsconstructknowledgefor
themselvesindividuallyastheylearnthroughexperiencing
thingsandreflectingonthoseexperiences.Theycanlearn

thingsthroughthecategoriesofthefundsofknowledgelike

MindsetTheory:Ithinkthatthemindsettheoryisanother
theorythatcanrelatetohowstudentsareabletomakeuseofthe
possessedfundsofknowledgecategories.Themindsettheoryis
basedonwhetherstudentshaveafixedorgrowthmindset.
Individualswhohaveafixedmindsetbelievethattheir
qualities(orskillsthattheypossess)aresetinstoneandthat
theycannotpracticeanddeveloptogainnewqualitiesorskills.
Ontheotherhand,peoplewhohaveagrowthmindsetbelieve
thateffortortrainingcanchangeordevelopnewqualitiesor
traits.Thisrelatestohowstudentscanmakeuseoftheir
possessedfundsofknowledgebecausedependingonwhich
mindsetthestudentpossesses,itcanbeahugeassettotheir
learningandfuturesuccess.
SocialLearningTheory(AlbertBandura):AnothertheorythatI
thinkcanrelatetohowstudentsareabletomakeuseoftheir
fundsofknowledgeandthusimpacttheirlearningisthesocial
learningtheory.Thistheorysuggeststhatpeoplelearnfromone
anotherfromobserving,imitatingaswellasmodeling.Ithink
thatalotofwhatisdevelopedthroughastudentsfundsof
knowledgedealswithwhattheyareobservingandexperiencing
inalloftheenvironmentsthattheyarepresentin.Theylearnby
whattheirparentsdoandbelieve,whattheirteammatesdothat
aresuccessful,howthecommunityrespondstosituationsand
eventsetc.Ithinkthatalloftheseexamplestieintothesocial
learningtheoryandthenfromthis,studentsdevelop
characteristicsandbeliefsthatcanhelpfurtherthemintheir
academicfutureandlatersuccesses.Overall,whatthestudents
areobservingandexperiencingrelatetotheirbehaviorwhenit
comestotheiracademics.
