Invitation to be Agents of Mercy

T
he focus of Pope Francis' Message for Divine Mercy underlines that God's name is 'merciful'
and His Mercy to us is itself an invita on to be Agents of His mercy. He has revealed
Himself to us, on many occasions in the Bible as the father and mother's embrace of their
child. The understanding of the concept of mercy spelt out in Sacred Scripture, above all, is the
closeness of God to His people, essen ally through help and protec on. This aspect is reflected
in the beau ful words of the prophet Hosea: "Through cords of compassion, and bands of love,
I ease the yoke on their jaws, and bent down to feed them." (11:4)
We do not have a God who is incapable of understanding and sharing our weaknesses (cf. Heb
4:15). Quite the contrary! Precisely because of His mercy, God became one of us: Born of the
Virgin Mary, he has truly been made one of us, like us in all things except sin" (Gaudium et Spes
22). By His incarna on, the Son of God has united Himself in some fashion with every man. He
worked with human hands, He thought with a human mind, acted by human choice and loved
with a human heart, explains the Holy Father.
We have o en heard how Thomas was adamant in wan ng a reality check for the basis of his
faith. He refused to believe. And he found his faith at precisely the moment he touched the
wounds of the Lord. The Pope reiterates "a faith that is not able to touch the Lord's wounds,
is not faith! A faith that cannot be merciful, as the Lord's wounds were a sign of mercy, is not
faith - it is an idea, an ideology." But if we really want to believe, we must draw near and touch
those wounds, caress those wounds to be healed, so that we in turn can reach out to others to
soothe their wounds.
This mercy comes to us as closeness and tenderness, and because of this, comes also as
compassion and solidarity, as consola on and forgiveness. The more we receive, the more we
are called to share it with others; it cannot be kept hidden or kept only for ourselves. It is
something which burns within our hearts, driving us to love and recognise the face of Jesus
Christ, in those who are most distant, weak, alone, confused and marginalised.
The Pon impresses on us that Mercy never allows us to feel sa sfied. It is the love of Christ
which makes us restless un l we reach the goal; it impels us to embrace, welcome and include
those who need mercy, so that all may be reconciled with the Father. Ci ng scripture, he says
that Mercy does not remain s ll: it seeks out the lost sheep, and when one is found, a contagious
joy overflows. Mercy knows how to look into the eyes of every person; each one is precious, for
each one is unique.
We ought not to fear, for it is a love which comes to us and involves us to such an extent
that we go beyond ourselves, enabling us to see His face in our brothers and sisters. Let us
allow ourselves to be humbly guided by this love; then we will become merciful as the Father is
merciful, urges Pope Francis.
In Jesus, therefore, we are able not only to touch the mercy of God with our hands, but we are
inspired to become instruments of His mercy. It is easy to speak of mercy, yet more dicult
to become its witness. This is a path that is life-long and which should not be interrupted.
Jesus has said to us that 'we must be merciful as the Father'. It is a lifelong endeavour, exhorts
the Pope.

Easter cry - Jesus is Risen
T
oday the Church repeats, sings, shouts, "Jesus is
risen!" But why? Peter, John, the women went to the
tomb and it was empty, He was not there. They went
with their hearts closed by sadness, the sadness of
defeat: the Master, their Master, the one they loved so much
had been executed, had died. And you do not come back
from the dead. This is defeat, this is the path of defeat, the
road to the tomb.
But the angel said to them: "He is not here, he is risen."
It is the first announcement: "He is Risen." And then the
confusion. The disciples remain closed all day in the Cenacle,
because they were afraid the same would happen to them as
had befallen Jesus.
And the Church does not cease to tell of our defeats, our
closed and fearful hearts: "Stop, The Lord is risen." But if the
Lord is risen, why are these things happening? Why are there
so many unfortunate things happening - diseases, human
tracking, the exploita on of people, wars, destruc on,
mu la on, revenge and hatred? But where is the Lord?
Yesterday, I phoned this young man with a serious disease,
a well-educated young man, an engineer, and talking to give
him a sign of faith, I told him: "There is no explana on for
what is happening to you. Look at Jesus on the Cross, God
did this with his Son, and there is no other explana on. And
he replied: "Yes, but He asked his Son, and His Son said yes. I
was not asked if I wanted it.
This moves us; none of us are asked: "Are you happy
with what is happening in the world? Are you willing to
carry on this cross?" And the cross goes on, and faith

in Jesus comes down. Today, the Church con nues to
say: "Stop, Jesus is risen." And this is not a fantasy; the
Resurrec on of Christ is not a party with many flowers. This
is nice, but this is not it; It is the mystery of the rejected
stone that ends up being the founda on of our existence.
Christ is risen, this is what it means.
In this culture of waste where what is not needed is
thrown away, discarded, the stone - Jesus - is discarded and is
the source of life. And we too, pebbles on the ground, in this
land of pain, tragedy, with faith in the Risen Christ, we have
a sense among many calami es. The sense to look beyond
them and say, "Look, there is a wall; there is a horizon, there
is life, there is joy, there is the Cross with this ambivalence.
Look ahead; do not close yourself. You pebble, you have a
meaning in life, because you are a pebble of that stone, the
stone that the wickedness of Sin has dropped.
"What about the Church today in front of so many
tragedies? The rejected stone is not really discarded.
The pebbles that believe and s ck to that Stone are not
discarded, they make sense and the Church repeats this
sen ment from the bo om of its heart: "Christ is risen." Let's
think a bit - each of us - think of everyday problems, diseases
we have experienced or someone of our rela ves; think of
wars, human tragedies, and simply, in a humble voice, not
flowery, just before God, we say, "I do not know how this
will go, but I'm sure that Christ is Risen, and I'd bet on that."
Brothers and sisters, this is what I wanted to say to you. Go
home today and repeat: Christ is Risen.

The fire is a symbol that is used

will succeed.

great purpose
and commitment.
Jesus on the Cross,
overcame His apparent
abandonment by God the
Father by prayerfully reci ng
the opening line of Psalm 22:
"My God, my God, why have
you forsaken me?" The rest
of the Psalm moves from
Absencing to Presencing,
from losing to gaining, from
complaining to praising, in
regard to the mystery of
God. The mere recita on of
Psalm 22 for help, u ered
by Jesus, went beyond his
apparent aloneness in death.
Silence does not mean
Absence. There is no area of
life today that falls outside
the Presence and Ac vity
of God. In the Cross, Jesus
is found to be Ac ve and
Present in the midst of
extraordinary evil, suering
and death. He draws good
out of evil, salva on out of
suering, and new life out of
death. The realms of human
failure and tragedy are today
revealed to be within the
compass of divine ac vity
and transforma on. Jesus
on the Cross, in His own
unique way, captures the
paradox in life. Moments
in my own life, when God
seemed most Absent, were
in hindsight recognised as
the very moments when God
was most Present - perhaps
even carried me in His strong
arms. In the same way, the
silence of God at Calvary did
not denote Absence. On the
contrary, silence and signs,
darkness and light, suering
and joy were the very
loca on of God's crea ve
Presence and Ac vity.

EASTER - A time of
purpose and Commitment
threatened by the darkness
of human, ecological and
nuclear holocausts, needs a
new and crea ve way to look
into darkness. Jesus on the
Cross showed us the way.
We have to struggle with
the God of Jesus against the
human forces of darkness.
Mar n Luther said, "The
Chris an is someone, who
in the face of darkness and
death, goes into the garden
of life to plant a tree, and
knows that he or she does
not plant in vain." Mahatma
Gandhi, Mother Teresa,
Baba Amte, Nelson Mandela,
Archbishop Romero - all did
the same. Jesus showed
by example the Power of
One. Others followed, and
it worked. One person can
make a dierence to the
world for the be er.
MUDITA MENONA SODDER RSCJ
It was precisely at the
moment, when Jesus
apparently felt abandoned
by God His Father, that
He felt an unexpected
sense of deliverance. As
if in the hard, sombre
labyrinth of necessity, He
had discovered liberty and
freedom - "Father, not my
Will, but yours be done." We
human beings too feel an
indescribable pride and joy
when, within ourselves, we
are the conquerors, although
externally we feel u erly
defeated. Outward calamity
is transformed into supreme
and unshakeable felicity.
This Easter, I was blessed
with the realisa on of
the true purpose and
commitment of Jesus on
the Cross. Suering is
beneficial when it leads to
some kind of Resurrec on
within, when strength or a
sleeping energy is aroused,
when unknown talents are
recognised, when clarity
about life's purpose and
direc on becomes clearer,
and when a stronger sense
of compassion for others
deepens within. I became
aware that much within
me needs to come to life.
Moments of suering help
me to look within my own
tombs of unfinishedness
and incompleteness. It is
here that I will be able to
discover resilience, vitality,
fidelity, love and endurance.
Jesus the Living One's love
is a Presence for ever. It is
through my very wounds and
cracks that my God opens

Easter The Transformation
of Pain
T
he celebra on of Easter
signals the advent of
spring me.
It is a me when the
diminishing blankets of snow
and paler shades of white
make way for a carpet of green.
Bare skeleton tree trunks
now begin to be do ed with green shoots
as another cycle of life unfolds.
Death and Resurrec on are the "substance" of nature.
It carries within itself the capacity for self-renewal.
In the Aristotelian connota on of the term,
underlying the accidental trappings of colour shape, form
and size
is the 'substance' of things that holds them together.
Beginning with Maundy Thursday,
the day of the Lord's Last Supper, the death of Jesus
and the celebra on of his Resurrec on
form the essen al parts of a Triduum in the
Chris an Calendar.
It is surprising therefore,
that the Gospel of John omits men on of the Last Supper
in his Gospel narra ve.
He replaces it with Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.
It is his way of poin ng out
that Self-Renuncia on is at the heart of
Chris an Discipleship.
John writes of the events of the Sacred Triduum
so that we see through the "veil of the descrip ons" to
its substance.
The three days together form a homogeneous whole
and must be celebrated as a "memorial".
For the believing Jew
the circumference of a "memorial"
goes far beyond the radius of "memory".
We are called not merely to remember these events as part
of history,
but to recognise their presence beyond me in the NOW.

When Jesus washes the feet of his disciples,
he is opera ng not so much out of his human substance,
but out of his "divine substance"
that lies at the core of his being.
The Genesis story of the crea on of human beings
emphasises this fact that God breathed into their nostrils
the breath of life
so that they became LIVING BEINGS.
We par cipate in the divine nature.
We have our BEING IN GOD.
This divine connec on is severed by sin,
a loss of awareness of our par cipa on in the divine.
Jesus' life, death a resurrec on
allows us to get into the stream once again.
The Resurrec on of Jesus is that which gives "substance"
to life.
This is another way of saying
that beyond the illusions of the ego (self)
we are called to live out of the selfless Self.
This is what Jesus demonstrates as he washes the feet of
his disciples.
This involves the experience of pain.
Physical pain however excrucia ng ends with death.
Beyond it however, we experience a dierent kind of pain.
This pain is the result of accumulated hurts,
unresolved conflicts, and nursed grievances.
These, mostly the result of a wounded ego,
lodge themselves in the ny recesses of our being
where body and spirit begin to merge.
We are tempted to think that like physical pain,
they must be endured, un l they are destroyed by death.
In the mean me, we con nue to be consumed by them,
perhaps hastening our own death in the bargain.
The celebra on of Easter oers hope that this need not be
the case.

 This is the kind of pain
that is not destroyed but transformed.
The Resurrec on becomes a "sacrament" for those
who believe.
It is the outward sign of an inward reality.
The physical pain and resultant death of Jesus
now manifests itself in his Risen Body.
It s ll bears the wounds in his hands and feet
but is now transformed.
It oers us the opportunity to transform inner pain.
The transforma on of inner pain occurs
when we are willing to wash one another's feet.
To iden fy with the Suering Christ
is not equivalent to doing violence to one's body.
Rather it means a willingness to undergo
the perhaps deeper pain of renouncing self
and allowing it to transform us.
It is not about burdening ourselves
with bearing the heaped insults of others that leave
us embi ered;
it is not the repression and denial
of the nega ve feelings we experience
thinking that in so doing we are "purifying" ourselves".

I think of those who go out of their way to visit the sick
or bereaved, providing comfort and guidance to many in our
country at some of the most dicult moments in their lives.
I think of the sacrifices and service of aid workers who put
themselves in harms way to bring much-needed relief in
war-torn parts of the world. We should celebrate all these
contribu ons and others like them, and the dierence they
make in our society and around the world.
In doing so, we should be confident about the role that
Chris anity has to play in the lives of people in our country.
And we should treasure the strong tradi on that we have in
this country of religious tolerance and freedom of speech.

Christ again calls all of us to the feast of faith, to the feast
of the Kingdom; he calls us to taste of the fruits of his
redemp ve sacrifice, to drink of the water springing up
into everlas ng life (Jn 4.14). However, our unity with the
Lord cannot be limited to merely par cipa on in worship
or to our personal eorts in prayer. It must in full measure
be reflected in all aspects of our lives. We cannot abide in
carefree idleness knowing that around us are people who
have yet to discover the joy of life in God, people who are
suering, the aicted, the lonely, the downcast or in pain by
way of illness. Our sacred duty is to ensure that the name of
Christ is praised in all places so that people, in seeing good
deeds accomplished for the glory of God, may partake in the
Orthodox faith and turn their hearts towards the Father who
is in heaven.

It is a process and involves con nuity, not annihila on.

Strangely, once we are willing to undergo this pain,
we will find ourselves willing to wash one another's feet.
Freed from the demands of the ego,
le ng go of the baggage that encumbers us,
we will resonate with joy within,
with others and with the whole of crea on.
It will be the surest sign
that we have begun to understand the Mystery of Easter,
which is to experience LIFE in all its fullness.

Earth our Home;
A Gift and a task

n the Biblical account of Crea on,
we read how God created the
earth before He fashioned humans.
Humans came into being only a er
the earth was furnished with plants,
animals, water, and air. While the Bible
apparently considers humans as the
crown of crea on, it also insists on their
role as stewards of the created world:
Till it and keep it (Gen 2:15). The
Earth Day which has been celebrated
every April 22, since 1970, is a fi ng
occasion to remind ourselves of this
primary responsibility.
This Earth Day was envisaged by
American poli cian, Gaylord Nelson,
to promote the idea of ecology, to
encourage respect for life on Earth,
and highlight growing concerns about
dierent kinds of pollu on. Gaylord
deplored the human carelessness

The Church has always voiced its
concern about the way we treat mother
nature. Pope Paul VI, in Pacem in Terris,
referred to the ecological concern as
a tragic consequence of unchecked
human ac vity. Years later, Saint John
Paul II, in his first Encyclical Redemptor
Hominis, warned that human beings
frequently seem to see no other
meaning in their natural environment
than what serves for immediate
use and
consump on.
Pope Francis,
who chose St
Francis of Assisi,

nature lover, as
his model, felt the
urgency to write
an Laudato Si on
care for the earth.
It is everyones
responsibility,
not just that of
the Catholics, to
protect the earth.
The earth,
which Pope
Francis calls Our Home, has been over
exploited and distorted over the years
in a quest for more wealth and more
comfort. Inven ons and discoveries
have brought great conveniences to
our houses, but, at what cost. The
results of this imbalance in ecology
are already showing up in our country
itself, the first few months of 2017
have witnessed drought in the
south, unusual snowing in the north,
relentless rain in the east and soaring
heat in the west, all happening at the
same me. The past months have been
named among the ho est months
in the past decades, and mercury is
expected to rise in the coming months.
That means more deaths due to heat.

the changing environment is causing
havoc in the lives of the people.

and start taking small steps towards
protec ng the earth. Below are a few
simple ways through which we can

and our earth:
Take a walk among the greenery and
simply appreciate it.
Plant trees every year, month and
week. Organize it as an event where
you can invite the others from the
neighbourhood to par cipate.
Pick up the waste materials and
recycle them or put the garbage into
a waste bin rather than leaving on the
ground or throwing on the roadside.
Limit the use of private vehicles
and avail yourself of public transport.
Thus, you will help conserve petrol and
reduce the pollu on in the city.
These might be small steps but
when a billion people do it together,
we can see the results. The earth will
cooperate when we use the natural
resources with care, and not with greed
and waste. J M Boice said, ''God made
a garden, but we li er that garden''. In
fact, in many places we have replaced
the garden with junk and garbage.
God created the earth; He created
you and me in His image and likeness.
Therefore, as believers, we have a
great responsibility to care for the
earth. We act on Gods behalf when we
treat Gods crea on the earth with
benevolence. We cannot really love
God, if we keep ignoring the earth,
because the earth is the Lords in its
fullness (cf. Ps 24:1).

Bandra West, Mumbai,
Cardinal Gracias told
the priests he had fond
memories of working
with them in their various
ministries in the Archdiocese
of Bombay, and encouraged
them in their new
"apostolate of prayer and
of rest."
"We are grateful for all
that you have done and
for all that you have given
to the Archdiocese over
years," Cardinal Gracias
told the priests.
"I am personally aware
of the great dedica on,
commitment and generosity
with which you priests have
selflessly served our people,
in spite of the numerous
challenges involved," the
cardinal said.
It is a tradi on which the
cardinal has carried out
since he was appointed
Archbishop of Bombay in
2006. Every Christmas and
Easter, he presides at Mass

At the start, let her own words speak for Roanna
Gonsalves, author of this brave new collec on of short
stories that should not be approached as just another
diaspora oering. The se ng may be diaspora
Australian, an podes. The circumstance may bring to
mind the Green Card, holy
grail of Indians going West,
here defined as Permanent
Residency (PR). The sensibility
is that of someone straddling
two countries with ease instead
of angst, as she tries to make
sense of one in rela on to the
other. Even so, in its sweep and
reach, it is not just another
diaspora collec on, at least not
to those of us in Mumbai who
have an in mate knowledge of
the world she le behind.
The roots are evident, parish,
youth movements, Mass
and Novenas, a conserva ve
upbringing that provides
security, even as it occasionally
s fles. There is the o -felt
binary, of forwardness and
progress up against the need
to stay behind and follow the
well-trodden paths laid down
by need and careful paren ng. But what to do with the
upwelling of emo ons, dreams and ideas that take one
to dierent climes, and con nents in search of the music
that plays in the heart?
Her words, taken from 'Straight, no Chaser'. "She went
home with a man from Cavana. The bike ride was sweet,
laced with le ng go. It was a surprise that she went with
him at all. But Cavana is a place of promise and forge ng.
Of moons that sweeten skies with roguish delight."
One of the few stories in the collec on set in Mumbai,
it isn't even about the quest for the PR, but for another,
more important quest, control over one's own life a er
the wedding is over, the children born, the husband,
almost inevitably, philandering across countries
and con nents.
Inevitably too, most of the protagonists are women facing
the realisa on that reloca ng their lives puts the onus
of change mainly upon them, that men will by choice be
the observers, thinly a ached to shi ing reali es and
changing narra ves.
The other stories are anchored in Australia, land of the Big
Sky and the bigger Wet, where you venture in on a prayer
and then spend half your life wai ng for the PR to come
through, so that you never need go 'home' again. This is
even as you helplessly navigate the treacherous shoals
of memory and longing that keep poin ng you towards a
shore you would rather forget.
In story after story, Gonsalves emerges as the master
of the original metaphor, the artist of
analogy, so that the familiar becomes
almost exotic, the cultural peculiarity
becomes the quirkiness next door.
Meanwhile, steeped in the Goan
Catholic traditions of a Mumbai origin,
she brings to her stories the rich flavours
of a past existence co-existing easily with
the present.
In 'Full Face', she sets the tone and the
mastery with her opening paragraph.
"I broke up with my boyfriend because
he was repeatedly unfaithful to me. So
I le Bombay and got myself a job as a
copywriter in Dubai. I was restless there,
surrounded by real gold, fake snow, and
men who would look, but not leap."
Her points of reference are vast the
topography of Dubai, transplant surgery,
societal nice es, Biblical references -
everything is grist to her mill.
So the protagonist in the story meets
Anil in a Dubai with trees transplanted
"like so many livers". She married him
because she was "a woman who needed a bra". He was
"a man who put his money where his mouth was. It
seemed logical to disarm and ride along together".
She repeats the virtuoso literary performance again and
again. In 'Curry Muncher 2.0', in 'Friending and Trending',
in 'The Permanent Resident' - the eponymous tle of the
book. The last is the story of a woman who decides to take
on her fear of water with swimming lessons at the local
bath, a scalene triangle that includes a father and his li le
daughter, and realiza on that black can mean numberless
things, as well as a hole with endless possibili es.
Hers is a voice we look forward to hearing again, sooner
rather than later.

Youthful and Faithful
The Youth Missions
April 2017
Lent is a me when the Church invites us to deepen our re-
laonship with God, when we are called to break all barriers
and build bridges with one another. It is a me to turn away
from sin and turn to God: to repent, forgive, show kindness
and generate love. This year, as we journeyed through the
season of Lent, preparing for Christs Resurrecon, we, the
youth of Our Lady of Immaculate Concepon Church, Borivli
were privileged to have the Youth Missions, which lasted
for seven days, and truly enriched us in many ways. Right
through these days from April 2 to 8, three Redemptorist
Fathers accompanied us with their loving care, precious me
and sacrifices, which enabled us to experience God in our
lives. With themes and Scripture verses, all aptly chosen, Frs
Ivel Mendanha, Henry Fernandes and Melroy Correa inter-
acted with about 400 of us with deep passion and devoon.
Through the Youth Mission, we were called To know Him
and to make Him known, and the three Redemptorists
walked with us throughout the seven days. Not only did they
draw more youth day by day with their inspiring messages,
but they also deepened our knowledge and called us to be
witnesses of the Lords love and mercy, so that we could radi-
ate the light of the Lord, that we may shine out for all to see
CHRIST in the youth of our Chrisan community. We are now
convinced that being really COOL means to actually be a
Christ-like role model for the world to see.
During the Missions, we reflected on the most essenal top-
ics namely, understanding ourselves, the Holy Spirit, love and
relaonships, the Sacrament of Reconciliaon, Family, the
Way of the Cross and the Passion of our Lord. We were called
to accept ourselves and to change and become beer human
beings. We now also know that we can call upon the Holy
Spirit whenever we are in need; Jesus has given us the Holy
Spirit to be our perpetual guide and help. We were encour-
aged to look deep before jumping into the Sacrament of Holy
Matrimony and to understand the true meaning of love and
commitment. As Catholic youth, we are blessed with the
gi of the Sacrament of Reconciliaon. How beauful it is to
know that one is forgiven and experience this through a me-
dium, chosen
by the Lord and
witness absolu-
on through
actual words
and signs. We
were coun-
selled about the
importance and
the Instuon
of the Family,
and how we
must cherish
our families and aim to be like the Holy Family. Lastly, we
were made to realiz=se how we too put others through the
very same passion and pain that Jesus went through millen-
nia ago, and were called to reflect on our mistakes.
This experience has pierced deep into our hearts, igning
that flame of the love for God and all humanity. The Mis-
sions helped us understand ourselves beer, and has given
a meaning and purpose to our lives. We have now under-
stood that God values us infinitely in our own weakness
and individuality.
On behalf of the youth of our parish, we express our deep-
est gratude to Frs Ivel, Henry and Melroy for giving us the
opportunity to have a very inmate encounter with God
through these seven days of the Missions. We thank our
Spiritual Director Bishop Barthol Barreo, the Youth Wing
of the Prayer Group, the Parish Youth Council (PYC) and the
Parish Youth Animators (PYA) for all that they do to build
the family of God through the youth. We pray that we may
inculcate the teachings of the Mission in our lives and make
it our mission to share what we have learnt and experienced,
with the world around us. Through His Word and the Sacra-
ments, may we accept Him as the Light to overshadow our
darkness and as a source of strength in our lives, so that we
may profess to all around us saying, I am a witness of Gods
Love and Mercy.

Pope: Begin to rise again
asserting the value of life

Asser ng the value of life . . . is already star ng to rise, Pope
Francis said in his address to the pilgrims who had gathered St
Peters Square for the Regina Caeli, the Marian prayer recited
in lieu of the Angelus during Easter celebra ons.
We shall be men and women of the resurrec on, he
added, if, in the midst of events that trouble the world
and the worldliness that keeps away from God, we are
able to undertake acts of solidarity and welcome, and feed
the universal desire for peace and the aspira on for an
environment free from degrada on. These are shared and
human signs that, inspired and sustained by faith in the Risen
Lord, can acquire an ecacy far greater than our capaci es.
Yes indeed, Christ is alive and ac ve in history through his Holy
Spirit: he redeems our miseries, reaches every human heart,
and gives hope to anyone who is oppressed and suering.
Earlier, speaking about the days Gospel, which referred to
the invita on of the angel to the women at the tomb (Then
go quickly and tell his disciples, He has risen from the dead-
Mt 28:7), Pope Francis noted we also feel directed at us the
invita on to act quickly and go out to announce the message
of hope to the men and women of our me. Ever since the
dawn of the third day, when the crucified Jesus rose, the last
word is not death, but life.
Finally, May the Virgin Mary, the silent witness of the death
and resurrec on of her Son Jesus, help us to be clear signs of
the Risen Christ amid the events of the world, so that those
who are in distress facing dicul es may not remain vic ms
of pessimism, but find in us so many brothers and sisters who
oer their support and consola on. May our Mother help us
believe strongly in the resurrec on of Jesus, the wonderful
mystery of salva on, and in his ability to transform hearts and
lives. May she intercede especially for the persecuted and
oppressed Chris an communi es that are called to a more
dicult and courageous tes mony.

For most people, Easter is synonymous with eggs and
bunnies. But, in the Roman Catholic tradi on, the most
dis nct symbol of the fes val is the Paschal candle,
ubiquitous at midnight services all over the world.
Paschal de (also called the Paschal season or Paschal
me) is a religious season for Chris anity that focuses on
celebra ng the resurrec on of Jesus Christ. It typically
commences with a vigil before the midnight mass, requiring
the ligh ng of the Paschal candle.
While the Church is the Paschal candles final des na on,
its journey begins in Goa, at an industrial unit in Verna. The
labour-intensive task of its making is handled by Blessed
Joseph Vaz Enterprises, the archdiocese of Goas authorised
centre. But dont let the industrial nature of the unit fool
you. Paschal candles are not machine-made. They have
been handcra ed since 2013, says Fr Jose Furtado, the
Centres managing director.
And its not easy. It regularly takes an en re days work to
make a single candle, and just four candles are decorated
everyday. Sizes vary; the smallest is 15 inches tall. There are
others of 20, 22 and 24 inches.
We dont make very large ones, since we use the correct
composi on to make them, and thus they have a long life
and dont get fully burnt, Fr Furtado says.
Tradi onally, Paschal candles were made from bees wax.
This wax variety is now rare and expensive, making it rather
unfeasible. While bees wax is s ll available (o en obtained
from Belagavi and Mumbai), its not very pure, according
to those in the know. There is now a slow and steady shi
to the far more easily available paran wax. There is
a problem when these candles melt, and thus, not many
priests or parishes order them, Fr Furtado says.
A dis nc ve feature of these Paschal candles is that every
component of it is made of wax. But it wasnt always like
this. Prior to 2013, transparent vinyl s ckers or pieces of
paper were used to inscribe le erings onto the candles.
Now, a wax sheet is used. This year, we have u lised wax
appliques, Furtado says. There are no alien elements such
as ribbons, fabric, or paper. The Paschal candles are made
en rely of wax.
The word Paschal, from late-middle English, is a
reference to the biblical feast of the Passover. It is a story
of a king who ordered the death of all the male ospring,
but then God promised to save them if the families gather
for a meal and apply the blood of the lamb they kill onto
their front door, said Fr Avinash Rebello, parish priest of
Margaos iconic Holy Spirit Church. The families whose front
doors bore the lambs blood were spared. Jesus Christ, the
Lamb of God, symbolises this Paschal lamb.
Hence, all Paschal candles are pierced with five incense
pins that are made in the shape of nails to mark Christs
five wounds. Fr Furtado adds, Previously, these incense
pins used to be brown in colour, but now they are red
and made of ground incense powder glued together using
melted wax. This year alone, they received orders for
approximately 250 Paschal candles from various parishes.
But the churchs workshop in Verna isnt the only place
in Goa these candles are made. For over 50 years now,
religious sisters of the Handmaids of Christ order have
spent many a Lenten day making Paschal candles.
Since 1965, our convents in Calangute, Old Goa and Goa
Velha have been making Paschal candles as well as candles
used for funerals, feasts, and other solemn occasions.
We then export them to Kerala, Karnataka, Belagavi,
Sawantwadi and other places, said Sister Mar na, who
belongs to the congrega on.
Another nun, Sister Doris, adds, Making candles from
beeswax is a painstaking procedure, so we start in January
and make 150 candles a month. These are made in the
form of layers by pouring hot wax through a wooden ladle
into the strings hanging on a metal ring (see photo).
What do these candles signify? The liturgy during the
Easter vigil also stresses that Christ, who rose from the dead,
dispelled darkness which denotes sin, says Fr Furtado, who
is also parish priest of the Livra Febres Church, Consua-
Verna. Hence, these Paschal candles, that signify the risen
Christ, are used on all the octave Sundays during the Easter
season ll Pentecost Sunday.
Study finds religious
persecution spread to
more countries in 2015

Global religious persecu on spiked from 2014 to 2015, the
Pew Research Center noted in a new report released this week.
Government restric ons on religion and social hos li es
involving religion increased in 2015 for the first me in three
years, the latest annual Pew Research Center report on Global
Restric ons on Religion began.
In 2015, there were very high or high levels of
animosity shown towards religious groups in 40 percent
of countries, the report noted, either through restrictive
government laws targeting religious groups or violence
or harassment toward adherents of specific religions by
other members of society.
The 2015 percentage was up six points from 2014, when
34 percent of countries reported such levels of hos lity to
religious groups.
Pews report drew from various sources on global religious
freedom, both from the U.S. government (annual interna onal
religious freedom reports of the State Department and
NOTES COMMENTS
the U.S. Commission on Interna onal Religious Freedom),
the European Union and United Na ons, and other non-
governmental organisa ons.
The report was part of the Pew-Templeton Global Religious
Futures project, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the
John Templeton Founda on.
Certain countries and regions of the world showed especially
high hos lity towards religious groups. Russia, Egypt, India,
Pakistan, and Nigeria all showed both government harassment
of and social animus toward certain religious groups.
Some of the most common instances of hos lity included
mob violence waged against people for their religious
beliefs or violence conducted in the name of religion, and also
government harassment and use of force against religious
groups Pew explained.
Certain regions fared worse than others on religious tolerance.
Countries in the Middle East and North Africa featured the
highest median levels by far of both government restric ons on
religion and social hos li es involving religion, Pew reported.
However countries in sub-Saharan Africa showed the largest
increase in the median levels of government restric ons in
2015, Pew noted, and both Europe and sub-Saharan Africa
showed marked increases in social hos li es involving religion.
In Europe, there were many reports of harassment or violence
against Muslims and Jews, con nuing a pa ern of both an -
Semi sm on the con nent and verbal or legal harassment of
Muslims as the European Union deals with an influx of refugees
from Muslim-majority coun es like Syria and Iraq.
For instance, Switzerland showed an increase in an -Semi c
and an -Muslim incidents, including the desecra on of a
Muslim cemetery and an assault of an Orthodox Jew where one
perpetrator shouted Heil Hitler!
Mosques and Muslims were targeted for vandalism or
violence in the wake of the January, 2015 terror a acks on
the oces of the sa rical publica on Charlie Hebdo and on a
kosher market in Paris.
Frances Interior Ministry reported that an -Muslim incidents
more than tripled in 2015, including cases of hate speech,
vandalism and violence against individuals, the report noted.
Thirty-two countries in the con nent showed social hos li es
toward Muslims in 2015, more than the 26 countries reported
in 2014. Meanwhile, the number of European countries where
there were social hos li es shown towards Jews remained high.
The widespread harassment of Jews is notable because
about eight-in-ten of the worlds Jews live in just two
countries the United States and Israel but Jews con nue
to be harassed in a rela vely large number of na ons (74 in
2015), Pew stated.

Holy Family SCCs
revive tradition
This year on Palm Sunday, Holy Family Church, Chakala revived
its tradi on of the Passion Play a er almost 15 years. Ini ated
by the Parish Priest and executed by the parishioners led by
Conan Pereira, the Passion Play was a grand success, with
close to 1800 parishioners thronging the church grounds to
witness what was, for most people, a very moving experience.
What dis nguished this drama sa on from the past was that
it involved the Small Chris an Communi es from the parish.
Fifteen communities and a cast of 160 (all parishioners),
rehearsed in their communi es, and then together for a few
days to put together what was easily the biggest intra-parish
collaboration ever. The result was an amazingly spiritual
experience, coupled with great teamwork, fellowship and
bonding between all the communi es. It was a very beau ful
way to step into Holy Week.

Slipper placed on statue
of Jesus desecrates Cross
Unknown criminals desecrated a cross in Santa Cruz West, an
auent suburb of Mumbai. The desecra on of the cross in the
local church took place. A woman of 42 entered the place of
worship around 7 am to pray. She went to the altar and noted
that the cross had been "decorated" with a garland of slippers.
Speaking to AsiaNews, Sajan K George, president of the Global
Council of Indian Chris ans (GCIC), condemned yet another act
of in mida on against Chris ans in a week, Holy Week, already
marked by numerous incidents of violence and abuse against
the minority and its sacred places.
A case was registered against unknown assailants at the
local police sta on, in accordance with sec ons 295 (damage
or injuries to a place of worship with intent to insult the
religion of any class) and 427 (act of vandalism causing damage
amoun ng to Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sajan K George said, "GCIC decries the desecra on of the
Holy Cross, which deeply wounds our religious sentiments
especially during Holy Week. This is most shameful that a
garland of slippers was put on the Sacred Body of Jesus Christ.
In Indian tradi ons, flower garlands are used to venerate and
honour, and here the Sacred Body of Jesus was garlanded
with slippers; this is a clear indica on of rousing communal
disharmony and wounding religious sen ments, and a move to
incite the Chris an people with this shameful act.
The president of the GCIC noted that it is the "second
episode of desecra on in the space of two months in Mumbai,
a er the decapitated statue of the Virgin in Kurla." This is even
more sad, he concluded, because "Mumbai is the financial
and cosmopolitan capital, tolerant of all religions. Here it is
really common to see people of all castes and faiths who flock
to Marian shrines and bring oerings to the Virgin Mary like
coconuts, flowers, candles, and more. So adorning the sacred
body of Jesus with a garland of slippers is a malicious act
inten onally done."

The Living Stations
Sacred Heart Church, Worli, for the third year in succession,
staged successfully a sound and light presenta on The Living
Sta ons of the Cross on the evening of Palm Sunday, 2017.
This costume drama, which involved the English, Marathi and
Konkani speaking youth and adults of the parish, brought in
crowds of parishioners, from even neighbouring parishes.
Enacted in four languages (English, Konkani, Marathi and East
Indian Marathi), it made many think about the relevance of the
Sta ons a er the season of Lent is over.
While earlier years saw the traditional Stations being
enacted, this year saw a major change. Director Sachin Kinny
realised that the Sta ons which enter our liturgical prac ces
only during Lent are relevant to the issues we encounter. He
conceptualised and staged the Living Stations of the Cross,
with a dierence. It was the Passion of the Christ of yesterday
juxtaposed with our private passions of today! Christ alive
and suffering in all of us, now. Thus making the Passion of
yesterday, alive and throbbing, for us today.
For instance in an accident that occurs, a police man draws
from the crowd a person to help the victim - a Simon of
today. A lady ministering to an aged lonely couple, wiping
their tears and ministering to them - Veronica seen in the
Mother Teresa of today!
Against the background of each traditional station, a
contemporary problem was mirrored, helping us to face it
in the light of the religious message that the sta on taught.
Dying, but with the knowledge that our Resurrec on is just
around the corner!

Holy Week marred by episodes
of religious intolerance
Christians in India fear new episodes of intolerance and
disturbance during this Easter season. Fides received reports of
incidents in six dierent states of India, episodes of harassment
and abuse on the part of Hindu extremists during Palm Sunday
liturgies on 9 April.
In the state of Madhya Pradesh three Indian evangelical
pastors leading a Palm Sunday service were arrested at the
instigation of Hindu fundamentalists on charges of forced
conversions and allurement. The three pastors are now in
prison pending bail.
In Tamil Nadu, a 24 hour home prayer meeting was
suspended by the police for not having a permit, although
the law requires no permit for such gatherings. Pastor
Gunasekharan, who was leading the prayer meeting, was
forced to promise not to hold such gatherings again.
In Chattisgar state, Christians in three different churches
in the outskirts of the capital Raipur were threatened and
terrorised by Hindu extremist groups. About 20 men on
motorbikes rode into church premises during early morning
prayers, deriding and in mida ng the congrega ons.
In U ar Pradesh, a Hindu extremist a acked a Pastor and
members of the Hindu Yuva Vahini youth group broke into
a church interrup ng prayers, similar interference in church
services is reported in the states of Rajasthan and Haryana, on
the grounds of presumed conversion campaigns.
Chris an Solidarity Worldwide told Fides: It is worrying to
hear that Chris ans in the worlds most populous democracy
are facing aggression from Hindu fundamentalist groups and
law enforcement agencies, given that freedom of conscience
and the right to freely profess, prac se and propagate religion
is guaranteed by the Indian Cons tu on. We urge the Indian
government to take firm ac on against fundamentalist groups
and law enforcement officials that intimidate and attack
religious minori es.

Washing of the feet in the
district Jail at Chandrapur
The core team of St. Thomas Church, and Christ Hospital,
Chandrapur is involved in the prison ministry since January

2017. Frs. Benny Mulackal and K.D Chacko and Sr. Yajna cmc
& Hitha cmc, from Mount Carmel convent school and a few
others visit the prison o en, especially on Saturdays. They give
inspira onal messages to the prisoners, give value educa on,
show the movies on posi ve values and give them counseling.
Apart from these, the sisters are providing skill development
programs for the benefit of the female prisoners. They have
started to give them coaching in tailoring and embroidery.
The Christ Hospital conducts medical camps in the jail once
in a month and provides free medicine to the inmates. There
are Around 700 inmates in the jail. Under the leadership of Fr.
Benny, Administrator, Christ hospital give mo va onal talks to
the prisoners with suitable inspira onal video clips.
On Maunday Thursday, 13th of April 2017, Frs. Benny
Mulackal and Chacko accompanied by the Srs. Yajna, Hitha and
Sr. Celine along with two laymen of St. Thomas Parish visited
the prison and around 700 inmates were made to assemble for
an inspira onal talk and washing of the feet of the prisoners.
The Jail superintendent Shri. G. K Mahale sir and his associate
Shri. Vaibhav Atram sir welcomed the guests with words and
flowers. Father K. D Chacko gave a message and meaning of
the washing of the feet. Then Father Benny Mulackal washed
the feet of twelve prisoners, wiped them with a white towel
and kissed their feet. It is to commemorate the washing the
feet of twelve disciples by Jesus. Jesus washed the feet of
disciples to show that He has come to serve and not to be
served and all human should be humble enough to do the
service of the society and live peacefully and lovingly. Jesus did
this before his crucifixion on the cross.
We specially thank the Jail in-charges for giving us
opportunity to serve the development of the prisoners.

Church harassed after
conversion allegations
Police in Indias U ar Pradesh state stopped a prayer mee ng
in a village church following allega ons from a Hindu group
that Chris ans there were conver ng Hindus.
Some 150 people, including seven tourists from the U.S. and
two from Ukraine, were present at the church service at St
Andrews Church in Dadhauli in Maharajganj district, when police
arrived on April 7, police ocer Anand Gupta told ucanews.com.
We checked the passports and visas of the foreigners and
found everything in order. We helped the foreigners leave the
place safely, he told ucanews.com.
We also spoke to the pastor of the church and other
participants in the service and found that they were just
praying there and found that the allega on of conversion was
untrue, Gupta said.
Pastor Yuhanna Adam from the independent protestant
church said Hindu groups had been shou ng slogans, hailing
Hindu gods and threatening to close down the church and
kill me. They accused me of forcibly conver ng people, he
told ucanews.com.
The Hindu ac vists accused Adam of using force or bribes
to make Hindus par cipate in church programs, said Abhinab
Singh, a police ocer in Guptas team. He said the police
spoke to several par cipants but they did not find the pastor
using any coercion.
We spoke to several men and women and some were
Hindus. They all said that they had been par cipa ng in
prayer in the church for several months and years. They
found peace in the church and so rou nely visited it, Singh
told ucanews.com.
However, the police s ll charged the pastor for not informing
them in advance he would be hosting foreigners but did
not file charges of forced conversion as their preliminary
inves ga ons could not find any [evidence], he said.
Usha Devi, a villager who a ended the program, wanted
police to provide protec on. She said she has been coming
to the church for four years and have found peace and God.
But now I feel extremely scared, she said.

Dalits stopped from climbing
hill for worship
Police on Friday, April 14 stopped a few hundred
Dalit Christians from climbing a hill to perform Good
Friday services.

Friday evening s incident was the return of a long-
standing dispute between the residents of Sogandi and
Alagusamudram over accessing a hillock between the two,
which is on poramboke land.
Mr. Jeyaseelan said the hill in Thirukazhukundram area
has been declared a no-go area. The people of Sogandi had
sought permission to worship at a shrine on the foot of the
hill also on poramboke land and had been allowed to do
so, but the situa on got out of hand when they a empted to
climb the hill.
The Dalits of Sogandi had installed some statues on the
hill, but we demolished them on December 31 a er the caste
Hindus of Alagusamudram opposed it, said Mr. Jayaseelan.
There had been a flare-up around Christmas last year. We
held two peace committee meetings, which did not yield
amicable settlement. As a result, the Thirukazhukundram
Tahsildar decided to impose status quo, he said.
Mr. Jeyaseelan said that Sogandi already has a church
within village land. The people of Sogandi were also
warned against trespass. According to them, they have been
worshipping a structure constructed on the hill for over 10
years, and therefore, should be granted access, he said.

The people of Sogandi met the District Revenue Ocer and
submi ed two complaints against the Tahsildar. They alleged
that the Tahsildars ac ons had hurt their sen ments.

Chris ans of Sogandi had been worshipping on the hill for
50 years. At 3 p.m on April 14, 500 of us were approaching
the hill with crosses in our hand. About 200 police personnel
stopped us from climbing the hill, said the pe on.

India's landmark law for
people living with HIV
The Indian parliament on April 11 passed a law prohibi ng
discrimination against people living with HIV in what
ac vists consider will help them live a life of dignity.
The law prohibits discrimination in employment,
educa on, housing and health care and ends the prac ce of
requiring people get tested for the disease as a pre-requisite
for access to employment and other social spheres.
The discrimination they face is beyond words, said
Father Roby Kannanchira, who coordinates the treatment
and educa on of children living with HIV in Kerala state.
Even doctors at government facilities refuse to treat
them. Schools refuse to admit them. They eat up this
discrimination and become broken human beings, said
the priest who periodically organizes a camp for 200 such
children to help them support each other.
The law should help us to go to the next level in
taking legal ac on against those who discriminate against
our children, he said. It will make people aware that
discrimination is a crime and lead to the general public
recognizing and accep ng people living with the disease,
he said.
With this law, we have one more weapon to fight

Risen Christ calls all to follow
him on path to life, pope says
Jesus is the risen shepherd who takes upon his shoulders "our
brothers and sisters crushed by evil in all its varied forms,"
Pope Francis said before giving his solemn Easter blessing.
With tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's
Square April 16, the pope called on Christians to be
instruments of Christ's outreach to refugees and migrants,
vic ms of war and exploita on, famine and loneliness.
For the 30th year in a row, Dutch farmers and florists
blanketed the area around the altar with grass and 35,000
flowers and plants: lilies, roses, tulips, hyacinths, daodils, birch
and linden.
Pope Francis began -- as he did the night before at the Easter
Vigil -- imagining the disciples desolate because "the one they
loved so much was executed. He died."While they are huddling
in fear, the angel tells them, "He is risen." And, the pope
said, the church con nues to proclaim that message always
and everywhere, including to those whose lives are truly,
unfairly dicult."It is the mystery of the cornerstone that was
discarded, but has become the founda on of our existence,"
he said. And those who follow Jesus, "we pebbles," find
meaning even in the midst of suering because of sure hope in
the resurrec on.
The pope's celebration of Easter got underway the night
before in a packed St. Peter's Basilica.
The Easter Vigil began with the lighting of the fire and
Easter candle in the atrium of the basilica. Walking behind the
Easter candle and carrying a candle of his own, Pope Francis
entered the basilica in darkness. The basilica was gently
illuminated only by candlelight and the low light emana ng
from cellphones capturing the solemn procession.
The bells of St. Peter's pealed in the night, the sound echoing
through nearby Roman streets, announcing the joy of the
Resurrec on.During the vigil, Pope Francis bap zed 11 people:
five women and six men from Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, the
United States, Albania, Malta, Malaysia and China.
One by one, the catechumens approached the pope
who asked them if they wished to receive baptism. After
responding, "Yes, I do," they lowered their heads as the pope
poured water over their foreheads.
In his homily, reflecting on the Easter account from the
Gospel of St. Matthew, the pope recalled the women who
went "with uncertain and weary steps" to Christ's tomb. The
pope said the faces of those women, full of sorrow and despair,
reflect the faces of mothers, grandmothers, children and young

people who carry the "burden of injus ce and brutality."The
poor and the exploited, the lonely and the abandoned, and
"immigrants deprived of country, house and family" suer the
heartbreak reflected on the faces of the women at the tomb

However, the pope added, in the silence of death, Jesus'
heartbeat resounds and his resurrec on comes as a gi and as
"a transforming force" to a humanity broken by greed and war.

Consistory announced
to approve Fatima
childrens canonization
Pope Francis will hold an ordinary public consistory on April
20, where the cardinals of the Church are expected to pave the
way for the canoniza on of the Fa ma visionaries.
There are five causes of canoniza on wai ng for approval by
the cardinals. Most prominent is the cause of Francesco and
Jacinto Marto, two of the shepherd children who witnessed
the 1917 Marian appari ons at Fa ma.
The cardinals approval at the consistory is the final step
in the process leading up to canoniza on. Pope Francis has
already given approval for the causes to move forward.
Following the consistory, canoniza on dates will be set.
It has been widely speculated that Pope Francis will canonize
the Fa ma visionaries during his trip to Fa ma for the 100th
anniversary of the Marian appari ons there. That trip will take
place May 12-13.
Francisco, 11, and Jacinta, 10, were the youngest non-
martyrs to be beatified in the history of the Church. The
brother and sister, who tended to their familys sheep with
their cousin Lucia Santo in the fields of Fatima, Portugal,
witnessed the appari ons of Mary, now commonly known as
Our Lady of Fa ma.

Syrian nun: U.S. bombing
is a step back
Two weeks a er the U.S. State Department honored her as a
Woman of Courage, a Salesian sister from Syria told reporters
President Donald Trump's decision to bomb a Syrian air base is
another step back from peace.
"I always hope for peace," said Salesian Sister Carolin Tahhan
Fachakh, who runs a nursery school in Damascus, Syria, and
received the Interna onal Woman of Courage Award award
from first lady Melania Trump March 29 in Washington.
"Everything ends," she told reporters in Rome April 11. The
war will end, too, she added. "Every me we say there is hope
for peace and let's move forward, something happens to set us
back. The situa on is ugly now," Sister Carolin said, referring to
Trump's decision to bomb government military installa ons.
The Syrian nun, who stopped in Rome on her way back to
Syria from the United States, said she truly doubts that Syrian
President Bashar Assad launched a chemical weapon a ack in
early April. The a ack is why Trump said he decided to bomb
Shayrat Air Base, the alleged source of the a ack.
Sister Carolin said Assad and his wife have supported and
protected the Salesians and other Chris ans in the country. "I
like my president," she said.

Indian appointed
consulter at Vatican
Communications Secretariat
Pope Francis has appointed 13 new consulters, including an
Indian, for the Va can`s Secretariat for Social Communica ons.
Father Peter Gonsalves of Mumbai Salesian Province is
currently the dean of the Faculty of Social Communication
Sciences (FSC) at Universita Pon ficia Salesiana (UPS) Rome.
The consulters were appointed on April 12. The Salesian
Rector Major appointed Father Gonsalves the FSC dean on
September 24, 2015. He is the first non-European to hold that
post in FSC, which was established in 1988.
Born in Mumbai, India in 1958, Fr Gonsalves became a
Salesian in 1977 and was ordained priest on December 19, 1987.
He holds the tles of Master of Philosophy and B achelor of
Arts from the University of Pune and a Bachelor of Theology
from Kristu Jyoti College in Bangalore. He received his
doctorate in Social Communica on at the Salesian Pon fical
U
niversity in 2007. In the previous years, he had also obtained
a diploma in Counseling from Xavier`s I ns tute, Mumbai, and a
diploma in Media Educa on from Bri sh Film Ins tute - Open
University, L ondon.
Dr Gonsalves also coordinated its first five-language
web portal of the Salesians at its headquarters in Rome. A
musician, lyricist and composer of modern hymns ``The
Peter Gonsalves Collection: Lyrical food for the soul`` is
a collection of 70 modern hymns by Fr Peter Gonsalves
released in 2012. Gonsalves pioneered media educa on in
India since 1984. He is a communication research analyst
of Mahatma Gandhi`s sartorial/nonverbal communication.
Author of three books on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Gonsalves first book on Gandhiji (Sage 2008) - Clothing for
Libera on: A Communica on Analysis of Gandhi`s Swadeshi
Revolu on - is the first analysis of Gandhi`s dressing style in
terms of communica on theory and an explora on of the
subliminal messages that were subtly communicated to a
large audience.
Dr Gonsalves began his career in media as media educa on
trainer in 1984 and a community worker for rural development
at the Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra, Ahmednagar. He founded

Laundry for the Poor
and Homeless
Pope Francis Laundry went into opera on on Monday,
April 10, 2017. It is a free service for the poor and homeless
to wash, dry and iron their clothes and blankets, reported a
statement by the Oce of Papal Chari es.
The ini a ve came to be following the invita on of the
Holy Father to give concrete experience of the Jubilee
Year of Mercy. He wrote in the Apostolic Le er Misericordia
et miseria, at the conclusion of the Jubilee: The desire for
closeness to Christ requires us to draw near to our brothers
and sisters, for nothing is more pleasing to the Father than a
true sign of mercy. By its very nature, mercy becomes visible
and tangible in specific acts.
The Papal Almoner, Archbishop Konrad Krajewski noted:
Here then is a concrete sign wanted by the Oce of Papal
Chari es: a place and a service to give concrete form to
charity to restore dignity to so many people who are our
brothers and sisters and who are called, with us, to build a
city we can trust.
The laundry is located inside the Community SantEgidios
People of Peace Center, at the old hospital complex of San
Gallicano, Via San Gallicano 25, in Rome.
The same voluntary oce which has made possible lately
showers, a barbershop, a wardrobe, medical clinics and the
distribu on of first aid relief for and to the poor, now will
manage the Popes Laundry.
In the rooms used for this service, are six washers and six
dryers, donated by the mul na onal corpora on, Whirlpool.
To share and coordinate this project was Procter & Gamble,
which two years ago, gave Gile e razors and shaving cream to
the barber for the poor in St. Peters Colonnade. P&G also
donated Dash Lenor detergent for the laundry.

Sir, Your enabling editorial, Easter Empowerment (The
Examiner, 15-21 April, 2017) has faithfully concluded that our
Easter Alleluia proclaims the unending and unquenchable fire
of Gods Love! This empowers us with light and life, grace and
mercy, joy and peace! So allow me to give these a ributes
a Scriptural Spin, to facilitate us to prac se these virtues on
a daily basis.
I have set you to be a light for the Gen les, so that you
may bring salva on to the ends of the earth (Acts 4:10). For
what will it profit one to gain the whole world and forfeit
ones life? (Mk 8:36). Like good stewards of Gods manifold ongoing massacre of innocents in this world's poorest country.

The Culture of Waste
Sir, Time and again, Pope Francis has hit out at the culture of
waste. Echoing the same sen ment, PM Narendra Modi in
his recent Mann ki baat radio talk, expressed anguish at the
humongous waste of food in the country. Taking a cue, the
Food ministry headed by Mr Ram Vilas Paswan is now planning
to fix the size and por ons of food items served in hotels and
restaurants to prevent wastage.
Monitoring food por ons is not feasible nor is it desirable.
Moreover, it could lead to chao c condi ons in hotels and
restaurants. Specifying that a plate should have only two
prawns or three chicken lollipops is ridiculous to say the least.
Besides, appe tes dier with age, physique and personal
tastes. A child may not be able to finish a full plate of food,
leading to avoidable wastage.
A more effective way of curbing wastage is to make it
mandatory for hotels to quote rates for full and half plates
separately for all food items, and serve them accordingly. This
will minimise wastage to a large extent and also prove to be
a boon for the weaker sec ons of society.

Sir, It was St John Paul II who fostered and nurtured the
devo on to the Divine Mercy of Jesus, St Faus na Kowalska.
This he ins tuted in response to Christs request. It is very
coincident that Pope Benedict bea fied John Paul II on May 1,
2011, also a Sunday of Divine Mercy. He was later canonised
by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014 on the occasion of the same
feast - three confirma ons, so that the faithful will con nue
to foster the devo on a ributed to St Faus na which is now
spread the world over.

Sir, The people of South Sudan are in urgent need of our
prayers. South Sudan is a landlocked Chris an majority country
in north east Africa. According to latest reports, there is an

place in Rwanda in 1994, resul ng in the death of 8,00,000
Rwandans, as the world looked on.
While the gassing of people in Syria and prospects of a
North Korea-US clash are domina ng the world headlines, the
ongoing mass murder of innocents in South Sudan is largely
ignored. But, ignored or not, the mass murder of non-Dinka
tribes is real and is happening, as I pen this missive.
According to latest reports, school children are made to lie
down in rows and then run over by armoured tanks. Women
are beaten and raped. Apart from the mili a, the army is also
involved in the rampage. Houses are burnt down and innocent
people are shot indiscriminately. Toddlers are thrown in the
rivers live.
Though largely unknown to the world, these atroci es are
taking place with the full knowledge of interna onal bodies,
including the United Na ons, the African Union, and the major
powers including United States, United Kingdom and Norway.
While Syrian refugees area being given asylum in the US and
EU in large numbers, not a single South Sudanese refugee has
been oered asylum by these countries.
More than 1.7 million South Sudanese refugees have fled to
neighbouring countries because of violence and famine. While
the Syrian and Iraqi refugees deserve our a en on, the total
neglect of the suering African people by the UN and world
powers is baing. Why is there this inconsistency in the level
of compassion and empathy for peoples, depending on the
region and race? Aren't we children of the same God?

An Unhappy State
Sir, Thank you for the interesting feature "Can we celebrate
'Our Health'?" by Fr Cedric Prakash SJ (The Examiner, April
15 to 21, 2017). Fr Prakash states that, according to the
global assessment on " health performance", India ranked
a pathetic 143 out of 188 countries, way behind countries
like Sri Lanka (79), China (92), even war torn Syria (117), and
Iraq (128). A few weeks ago the Mumbai Mirror carried a
report on the 'world's happiest countries'. There, too, India
was ranked amongst the lowest at 122 as compared to our
neighbours, Pakistan (80), Nepal (99) and Bangladesh (110).
In today's India, rationalists are brutally murdered
for their beliefs. Writers, cartoonists and even stand-up
comedians are threatened with violence. Couples cannot
hold hands and partying is evil ('honour' killing is fine). A
woman is raped, and all that a politician has to say is "boys
will be boys!" I cannot enjoy my favourite beef steak as
beef is banned. The criminal-politician nexus flourishes,
while ordinary citizens are often treated like criminals. Is
it then any wonder that India stands so low in terms of
health and happiness, as compared to other countries? If
ever there is a rating for bizarre countries, India could then
come out on top.

On a Hill Far Away
Sir, Palm Sunday 2017 was a unique and memorable
experience. John Fernandes of Johan Holidays was
organising an overnight trip to Igatpuri, and I joined this
group of around 25 people from various parts of Mumbai
We left Bandra at 7 am on April 8, in an AC bus. Our first
stop was at the Infant Jesus Shrine in Nashik where we
attended the Eucharistic service. We then proceeded to
the Satyagiri Retreat Centre, Igatpuri run by the Dominican
Order where we stayed. This large, spotlessly clean Centre
is located on a hill.
We held the Stations of the Cross that evening on this hill
far away. The hill overlooks a river and Igatpuri. Instead of
following the standard format, we came forward and spoke
about how we felt each station was relevant in our lives
today. Valerie ably led the singing of hymns.
The next morning, we were all ready to attend Holy Mass
at the quaint Sacred Heart Church nearby after joining the
Palm Sunday procession. Imagine our surprise to find that
the parishioners and nuns of two different orders were
there in numbers to welcome us to the procession! It was
a touching and inclusive gesture on the part of Fr George
Raj OM, Fr Paul Mathew OM, Fr Sunil DSouza OM, the nuns
and the parishioners.

Sir, I refer to the news item in The Examiner dt 15th April 2017
and The Times of India dt 17th April 2017 (See City Lights). telling
us about the honour bestowed on Fr. Francis DBri o of Vasai
Diocese when he was invited to address a religious congrega on
on an esoteric subject at the Hanuman Temple in Worli on the
occasional of Ramnavi. We are told that Fr. DBri o spoke on
Asato Maa Satgamay the ancient maxim which talks of ones
journey from untruth to eternal truth To be honest such an
abstruse subject may be beyond most of us me included. However
it is obvious that Fr. DBri o is held in great awe of his scholarship
in the field of Indian philosophy and religious teachings by the
descrip on of the audience being Choc-a-BlocI believe many
prominent Catholics were present at the conclave.
Fr. DBri o is a well known personality in Vasais society and is
closely connected with Vasais cultural ac vi es. He has several
books to his credit and is considered a li erateur He is famous
for his Marathi transla on of The Bible. The Catholic community
must indeed proud of Fr. DBri os achievements in fields where
only Hindu sages otherwise prevail. More power to his pen and
