Music Final Project

Ideas: Composing a Mash-up using GarageBand

- Mixing the beat together
- Demonstrating the similarities in EDMs drop section
- Seeing how it goes together
- Finding the similarities in different EDM songs
- Musics mood and tone

Statement of Interests
I want to create a music, my own music that satisfies a personal preference. I always want to
use GarageBand; so, after I learned how to use it, I want to use the skills I gained to compose a
song. My taste in music varies through many genres, styles, beat, and tone; however, the genre of
music that I can always listen to is EDM. I always love when the beat rises up and down. I am
passionate and obsessive about music: how the beats throughout EDM music support the rhythm
and the mood throughout the music. Fantasizing of matching and mixing all these beats drives me
to do a Mash-up song (exclude vocal parts). It would be a great start for me in learning about EDM
music by mixing the similar beats together to learn about the pattern in the songs.

Plan of Action
1. Brainstorm the ideas based on my music preferences
- Genre of music that I like and enjoy the most
- Type of music that I associate with / frequently listen to
- Similarities in the music that I prefer
- What I do enjoy when listening to music
- Daily life basis
2. Generate the final ideas: composing EDM songs
3. Find and download the EDM songs online
- The songs I usually / recently listen to
- EDM Playlist I created on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?
list=PLX3deJd4eEyzdZQvAj_CLubbDinps_rlx)
4. Use GarageBand to cut and compose all songs into a drop part
5. Research more on the common sound waves in EDMs the drop part
6. Replace the songs where the sound waves match one another
7. Summarize the key ideas / knowledge I have gained

Detail Progress:
Day #5: April 16, 2017
- Drum roll can be a sign signaling the next section of the song, specifically forecasting about
the drop section.
- Rhythm is one of the most important thing in EDM, the production of EDM needs to consider
about how different beat or instruments will combine to establish the key rhythm of the song.
The main point is the correct juxtaposition of rhythmic patterns for different instruments and
percussion.
- Throughout the song, each instrument will be repeated after a specific length of time.
- Role of Sound Effects in EDM:
- Purposes: set the mood and atmosphere of the songs, convey an emotion, or created as one
of a rhythmic component
- Personally, I feel like Zapssound made by a sudden release of electricityare the most
common techniques used in EDM.

Day #6: April 17, 2017

- EDM main rhythm is created through looping.

- Rhythmic streams = several instruments are contributed as the rhythmic pattern

- Strong beats are more likely to be looped across the song
- Overall, the EDM songs has similarity in term of rhythm as it is mostly created by the
technique of loop or percussive pattern. However, when the sound is adjusted or mixed with
other instrument, the specific sound then become distinguishable from others.

Day #7: April 18, 2017

Sub-genres of EDM (based on my understanding in each categories)
1. Tropical House:
Call On Me - Starley
2. Deep House:
In The Name Of Love - Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha
Scared To Be Lonely - Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa
Middle - DJ Snake feat. Bipolar Sunshine
3. Electro House:
Let Me Love You - DJ Snake feat. Justin Bieber
Alone - Marshmello
4. Techno:
Byte - Martin Garrix & Brooks
Open Your Eyes - Sam Feldt & Hook N Sling
5. Trance:
Secrets - Tisto & KSHMR feat. Vassy
6. Dubstep:
Turn Up The Speakers - Afrojack & Martin Garrix

Day #8: April 19, 2017

Basic categories in differentiating the sub-genres in EDM:
- BPM: varies between 70 to 180 BPM
- Variation of electronic instrument: Techno normally has repetitive beats over and over again
- Melody: Techno has less melody than others
Day #10: April 21, 2017
A Demonstration of Common Sound Waveform in EDM Music
Waveform demonstrates:
- The reputation of the rhythm / beat through the songs
- How the beat during the drop is mostly high
- Filters that create cutoff frequency from high to low, a popular technique used in EDM

The waveform of each songs also illustrates that during the drop section in EDM, the frequency of
each songs are almost the same. The music I composed clearly show how smoothly it goes from one
song to one another. By cutting only the drop part in EDM songs, most of what I cut can match with
one another; one of the best way I discovered is to look at their waveform whether they match or
not.
