Review

Definitely, maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds, is a new dramedy which deals with those romantic love
affairs from early adulthood, making viewers see the blind side of life with its ups and downs. Even
though the most recognisable face might be Ryan Reynoldss, actors such as Isla Fisher or Abigail
Breslin, whose acting skills were hugely praised by critics, also star in the film. The result is a
dazzling script that turns this fairytale-like story into a very realistic one.
Although the plot might sound surreal, the story could happen to anyone. In the beautiful
Manhattan, a soon-to-be-divorced Will Hayes goes to school to pick up his daughter Maya. The ten-
year-old had had her first sex-ed class at school and began to wonder how their parents actually
met. Will tells his story in a mysterious manner, making up the names of his three love affairs so his
daughter guesses which story corresponds to her mothers. After having told his chaotic love life,
Maya concludes that her fathers wrong choice is affecting his happiness, encouraging him to
express his feelings to the woman that swept off his feet.
Regarding the acting, Abigail Breslins short appearance on screen has been lauded, stating
that Reynoldss sensibility would not have been possible without her intervention, giving the
protagonist humanity and tenderness. Isla Fisher is by far the most interesting secondary character,
causing such a high chemistry that is often compared to Rachel and Rosss on Friends. The script
provides a mixture of laughter and tension, a combination which makes the film attractive until its
climax.
To sum up, Definitely, maybe is not another film about breakups. Its crash of reality and
freshness will surely lead to an innovative way of perceiving love, whether it is on or off-screen.
