LITERACY STRATEGIES

Observe your MSTs classroom and general practices you see around
the school. Discuss the areas below in context of what you observe in
school and support with a photo and a reference to reading when
possible.

Describe the classroom environment.


There are for groups each group had 6 chairs. Two display board in the back and small white in the
front and a smart board. The teacher had her table and her computer. There is a table that had two
computers for the students. And there are five cases two for the students books and three for the
teacher materials. Also there is a mat of the students to sit on during circle time. There is a small
table and two chairs in reading area.

Consider how the class is a print rich environment. What print can you
see around the room? (labels, captions, flashcards, headings, rules,
instructions, timetable, flash cards, etc) For each one you mention
insert pictures and state the purpose of each one.

The teacher two boards is the back of the classroom one for English and the other for math and
science. She sticks the students work on it. Also, there is chart of the letters on the top of the white
board. That chart shows them how they can write the letters. Its divided the letters in to three
groups Chicken, Giraffe and Monkey letters. There is a schedule for the day. So, each day the
teacher change the class depend on the day. There is a chart of Vocabulary target. It had the new
vocabulary of the English, Science and Math. So, the students can see the new vocabulary. Calendar
companion, it had the today is, yesterday was, tomorrow will be, the month is, the season is, the year
is, the weather is. Classroom rules, there are 7 rules. Chart of Literature Genres and print rich
environment of the high frequency words.

Does the teacher read to the children? How often? How does she
motivate them to read?

The teacher and the students had a reading book that had stories. Each story
related to the lesson and had the new vocabulary. So, with the teacher had a
new lesson and new vocabulary she read for them the story and explain the
new vocabulary and then she give them an activity to make sure that they
know the new vocab. The teacher let students to read when she finishes her
lesson or if they finished their activity. And she had a web site that she put for
them stores to read it at home and she can cheek it they read or not. She can
see how many time did they read and how long its take. She cheek that every
week and give them point.

Consider how the teacher reminds children of any concepts of print


when reading? (left-to-right, top to bottom, punctuation, author,
illustrator, etc)

The teacher did not remind the students about the concepts of print. But in the beginning of
her reading she tells them the name of the author and the illustrator. And then she asks
them what is the author do and what is the illustrator do.

How does the teacher teach phonics and word attack skills to
children? Describe a phonics lesson you observed and mention how
the children are scaffolded to recognise the word and get the
meaning.

I did not observe phonics lesson. Her lesson was vocab, reading and writing. Because, the
student know the phonics and they take it before. However, there are same students did not
how to read so they need to lean about phonics but the teacher did not do that.

Ask your teacher about special reading events carried out in the
school - e.g Book Character Day, DEAR Time, Book Fairs, Extreme
Reading competitions etc.

Describe some types of writing activities or the method the teacher


uses for writing e.g emergent writing, copy writing, dictations, etc
In the end of each lesson the students had dictations about the vocab that they take in the lesson.
The teacher let the students to copy her writing when they answer the book pages. And in the
beginning of the class she write on the board question and the have to answer it on their book.

Reflection
Choose 3 best practices you observed during your time
in school. Reflect on these and consider why you could
implement these in a UAE primary classroom in the
future. Explain how these practices will affect student
learning and reading levels in a primary class.
The teacher had a web site that she put for them stores to read it at home
and she can cheek it they read or not. She can see how many time did they
read and how long its take. She cheek that every week and give them
point. That will help the student to learn new words and they will develop
the language. Also, Every day in the first class and at the begging of the
class the teacher write a question on the board and ask them to open their
book then she read for them the question and asks them to answer in their
book at less two sentences. That will help the students in writing and it will
make them imagen and think.
