To The Owners of KIND:

We are students that attend Austin High School in Austin, Texas. Our names are Zade
Mahler, Chloe Harris, Corley Holland, and Sarah Latham. For our geometry project we had to
redesign any packaging to make it as effective as possible and save the most space, while at
the same time not changing the size of the contents. We chose to use your KIND Cinnamon Oat
Cluster Granola. We are proud to say that we found a more environmentally friendly and space
conserving packaging because we noticed that there was lots of extra space in the bag that
could easily be reduced. We believe we have found a solution that also fits all of the needed
package information as well.
After purchasing your tasty granola, we emptied it into a glass cylinder to find the
volume, which we calculated to be 615 cm3 . We then found the volume of the bag by filling it
with water then emptying the water into a glass cylinder. The volume of the bag was 1500 cm3 ,
which proves that 59% of the whole bag is just air space. The volume of the air space was 885
cm3 which we found by subtracting the volume of the granola from the volume of the bag. The
air space takes up over half the bag and is greatly unneeded. Our new packaging design has a
volume of 997.8 cm3 and contains the same amount of granola with a volume of 615 cm3 , this
leaves an air space of only 382.8 cm3 which is only 38.3% of the volume of the bag, instead of
almost half of your original packaging.
Our project brought us to the conclusion that our new packaging is more suited for
placement on the shelf as well, because it easily can stand up, unlike the bag. Our new model is
in the shape of a cylinder 10.5 cm tall with a diameter of 11 cm, a volume of 997.8 cm3 , and
has 38.3% airspace when filled with the granola. The new model is cardboard so it is more
environmentally friendly and is recyclable unlike the bag. Another perk is that it has a spout so
the granola can easily pour out along with a removable lid that can be reattached. These assets
make our model reusable so it is not wasteful. The surface area of the original packaging is
about 607.6 cm2 and our new packaging is 557.6 cm2 which reduces unnecessary space, while
also has the space to still fit all of the needed writing and even space for extra. We provided
pictures of our new package to give you a better understanding. Please write us back if you
