Definition/Explanation Clues:

Sometimes a words or phrases meaning is explained


immediately after its use.

Example:

1 Haberdashery, which is a store that sells mens clothing, is becoming more


common today.
2 There is great prosperity in the country but many citizens are living in poverty.
3 Some celestial bodies, such as the planets and stars, can be seen with the naked eye.
4 The manager wanted a weekly inspection, which is a methodical examination of all the
equipment.
5 There was a lot of tangible evidence, including fingerprints and DNA, to prove them
guilty.
6 There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation, such as snow or sleet.
7 The factory supervisor demanded an inspection, which is careful and critical examination
of all the meats processed each day.
8 The arbitrator, the neutral person chosen to settle the dispute, arrived at her decision.
9 Our teacher received a small stipend, or payment, for giving travel lectures to local clubs.
10 Sedentary individuals, people who are not very active, often have diminished health.

Antonym of Context Clues/Contrast:

Are words with opposite meanings. An opposite meaning context clue


contrasts the meaning of an unfamiliar word with the meaning of a
familiar term. Words like although, however, and but may signal
context clue.

Example:

1 Emma had a lot of anxiety about the exam but I had no worries about it.
2 Marty is gregarious, not like his brother who is quiet and shy.
3 She is a famous singing star in her country but unknown to the rest of the world.
4 I am willing to hike in the mountains, but he is reluctant because it gets so cold walking
up and down the trails.
5 Avoiding the accident was futile. Both cars did not have time to stop before crashing.
6 Trying to save money by putting off going to the doctor may have a detrimental, not
helpful, result.
7 Langston was jubilant when he got the news; before he found out, he was depressed with
the blues.
8 Dianna appeared to be a moral and upstanding young lady, but those who knew her that
she was iniquitous.
9 Joe was reluctant to take the job of captain of the team. He was afraid that the time it
would take would hurt his grades. On the other hand, Billy was eager for the chance to be
the team captain.
10 Many politicians do not give succinct answers. They prefer long ones that help them
avoid the rumors.

Synonym of Context Clues/Restatement:


Other words are used in the sentence that has similar meaning.
Example:

1 He would never reveal our secret. He doesnt tell people things that arent their
business.
2 She hums continuously, or all the time, and it annoys me.
3 The dates are listed in chronological order. They start at the beginning and
end with the last event.
4 Her animosity, or hatred, of her sister had divided the family.
5 Bill felt remorse, or shame, for his harsh words.
6 This situation is a conundrum - a puzzle.
7 It was an idyllic day; sunny, warm and perfect for a walk in the park.
8 The young girl was very aloof. She always seemed unsociable,
unapproachable, and uninterested.
9 The actress read through a book and perused a newspaper.
10 After seeing the picture of the starving children, we felt compassion or pity
for their suffering.

Example of Context Clues


An example of the word is given following the sentence or within
the sentence.
Example:

1 The builder that the house could be built on a number of sites, for example,
along a wooded path, near the ocean, or a top of mountain.
2 Geology is the study of many topics, such as rock formations and biological
changes in the earth.
3 In the past month, we have had almost every type of precipitation, including
rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
4 Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and trout, live in the coldest
parts of the ocean.
5 Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated man
through the centuries.
6 In the course of mans evolution, certain organs have atrophied. The
appendix, for example, has wasted away from disuse.
7 The archeologist found different amulets, such as a rabbits foot and bags of
herbs, near the ancient altar.
8 Legumes, such as peas and beans, produce pods.
9 Forest floors are frequently covered with fungi- molds, mushrooms, and
mildews.
10 She made a school infraction by throwing snowballs at recess.
