Vision of the School Library Media Program

The school library media program is an integral part of student learning and achievement. It has a
central place in the entire educational process and provides all students and staff members with
equitable and timely access to ideas and information. Through the school library curriculum, media
specialists empower students and staff to be enthusiastic readers, lifelong learners, and responsible
citizens in the information age.

Mission of the School Library Media Program

All Washington County Public Schools elementary, middle, and high schools have a library media
center that is staffed with a library media specialist and are equipped with resources that support
instruction in all curriculum areas. Across all levels, library media specialists teach information literacy
skills that are integrated into the curriculum. Library Media Specialists teach students how to become
21st century, lifelong learners, informed decision-makers, and ethical and responsible users of ideas
and information. Information literate students will use their skills throughout school, college, and life.

The WCPS Library Media Program provides access to digital resources, including online databases
and ebooks, for student use twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. Students should check with
their library media specialist to obtain the user ID and password to access these valuable resources.
In addition, students at the secondary level have access to the books in all middle and high school
libraries in the county through an interlibrary loan program.
