Student Success

One of the most successful stories that we observed was how after implementing

project fit student behavior changed both during P.E. class and around campus. The use

of the yellow brick ribbons was a great way to encourage students to be competitive

and to behave the way they were expected to throughout the school day.

The activity that remained the most competitive during P.E. was the pacer test.

Students were eager to see their names moved on our chart and challenge poster from

bronze to silver and so on. Throughout the year only one student, a fourth grade student,

was able to receive the Kong certificate.

Advice for Others

Project fit embraces a culture of physical activity in our schools. Why physical

activity? The answer is that students who are physically active tend to have better

grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, focus and classroom behaviors. No,

physical activity wont solve all of our problems, but it does ensure we are providing

the best possible chance for our students to succeed. And the great news is that we dont

have to build a physically active culture overnight, it just takes a little hard work and

time.

The Future of our Program

Through Project Fit our Physical Education Program now has set goals and rewards

for students to be actively engaged and aware of how important it is to live a healthy fit
lifestyle. When using the different activities students were often eager to compete and

to push themselves physically. Our Physical Education Program will continue to follow

the curriculum and use of the various Project Fit activities.

Future Support

After Project Fit was introduced to our school, it was easy to understand what to do

because of the representatives that visited us were very informative and knowledgeable.

We at Escatawpa Upper Elementary will continue to provide data and monitor our

students while keeping close contact with the Project Fit family throughout Mississippi.

We are thankful to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi for providing us everything

we needed in order for our first year to be a success.

A New Lesson Learned

One of the most important lessons learned was that in order to provide the data

needed for Project Fit, Physical Education Teachers have to complete it at least two

weeks ahead of the expected date of return. This ensures that it will be delivered on

time as Physical Education Teachers are often obligated to helping in other areas of the

school when needed.

An Old Lesson Remembered

At first we doubted if the program would be successful as we thought some of the

activities would not gain students interest. After using the different incentives and

being consistent with the chart and challenge boards, students did their best to compete

and that led to them becoming more fit.

Success Stories Struggles

There is no definition of success as any progress that is made is a positive change in

our childrens lives. The Project Fit program in itself is a success. The program has
allowed our Physical Education program to be more structured and competitive.

Students who were once not interested in appropriate behavior and engaging in physical

activity are now participating and trying to be more active.
