The Project Team

Case Study #2 New Team Member

Case Questions
1. Bob is demonstrating what behaviors with respect to valuing team diversity?
What are some alternative choices for what Brad can do next? What should he
do?
Answer: Bob is definitely showing signs of discrimination against his own
team members. The wide range of diversity does not appeal to him and he
seems to believe that he needs to carry the weight of the team with Bill. The
team has nothing in common as far as age, appearance, ethnicity, gender,
health, job status, marital and parental status, race, and religious affiliation
for this project. This is how Bob groups the members of his team. Bob is
ultimately discriminate against them and has been guilty of closed-
mindedness, labeling, ridiculing, insulting, harassment, and discrimination.
Brad should not stay there. The first thing that he should do is make a formal
complaint against Bob. Once Brad has completed his formal complaint he
should leave let them know that he doesnt want to work for someone like
that.

2. What should any of the team members do?

Answer:
The team members knew what he was saying about them they could report
him to his superiors. It is important for the team to understand that diversity
in the project is very important. The project manager needs to discuss the
importance of respecting and valuing diversity at project team meetings at
the beginning of the project as well as throughout the project.
3. What could be done to improve the climate for diversity in this case?
Answer:
Bob needs to be replaced as the project lead. A new project manager needs
to be assigned and discuss the importance of diversity throughout the
remainder of the project. The project manager needs to promote and foster a
respectful and supportive work environment that removes barriers to valuing
diversity, values differences, and encourages participation by all team
members. The PM needs to establish and clearly communicate expectations
and exemplify that expected behavior.

4. What do you think Bobs direct supervisor would do if she were aware of
Bobs actions?
Answer:
If Bobs supervisor knew how he was acting, he would be fired immediately.
He apparently does not understand the value of diversity in his team
