    activitiesthatwereunusualforgirlsatthetime,suchassoccer,swimming,andevenwrestling.

    In1922,KahlowasenrolledinEscuelaNacionalPreparatoria,arenownedschoolinMexico

    whereshewasoneoffewfemalestudents.Atschool,Kahlobecameinvolvedwithagroupof

    intellectualandpoliticallyeducatedstudents,shealsobeganstudyingundercommercialpainter

    FernandoFernandez.OnSeptember17,1925,shewastravellingwithaclassmatewhentheir

    buscollidedwithastreetcar,causingahandrailtoimpaleKahloship.Thiscausedsevere

    injuryandfracturesinherspineandpelvis.Duringherrecovery,Kahlobegantopaintaself

    portrait.Afterherrecoveryin1928,shereconnectedwithDiegoRivera,aMexicanmuralist

    whowasworkingonhismuralTheCreationinherschool.Heencouragedhertopursueart

    andthecouplemarriedayearlater.Laterinlife,thecouplewouldhaveanunconventional

    relationship,leadingveryseparatelives.KahlobegantotravelwithRiveraforhisart

    commissionsandworkedonherownartaswell.In1930,thecouplemovedtoSanFrancisco.It

    washereatthesixthannualexhibitionoftheSanFranciscoSocietyofWomenArtistswhereshe

    displayedherpaintingFridaandDiegoRivera,whichbegantodrawpeopletoherart.She

    alsobeganworkingonmoresurrealandgraphicpiecesasshetravelled,oneofhermostpopular

    being,HenryFordHospital.Overtheyears,thecontroversiesthatsheencountered,aswellas

    herownchallenges,furtherinfluencedherwork.In1954,shewashospitalizedforherher
    physicalandmentalcondition.ShediedonJuly13inherchildhoodhome.Herdeathis

    controversialwiththecausebeingpulmonaryembolismorsuspectedsuicide.Sheis

    rememberedasanexceptionalartistandfeministicon.

    HerpaintingMyDressHangsTherewascreatedintheyear1933.Withthispainting,

    KahlowastryingtorepresentherlongingtoreturntoMexico.Afterspendingmorethanthree

    yearsinAmericawithherhusband,shewantedtogobacktoherhomeinMexico;however,her

    husbandwasenjoyingthefameandrecognitionhewasreceivinginAmerica.Kahlowantedto

    displaythatherlifewasbackinMexico.ShealsodepictedtheartificialvaluesofAmericaand

    deconstructionoffundamentalsinpeopleslives.Kahlowantedtoshowhermentalabsence

    fromthechaosbehindherwhichshedisplayedwiththelackofherselfinthepainting.Kahlo

    usedrich,boldcolorsinthispainting.Shegaveeachcolorameaning,whichsheexplainedinher

    journal.KahlousedoilpaintstocreatescenesfromMexicoandAmerica.Kahloalsopaysvery

    closeattentiontodetailinallaspectsofthepainting.
