Application Details
Consumption Dependent on substrate profile and porosity:
2
On concrete and mortar: 250 to 270 g/m for 200 micron DFT
Substrate Quality The substrate must be clean, dry and free of all contaminants such as dirt, oil,
grease, coatings and surface treatments, etc.
If in doubt, apply a test area first.
Substrate Preparation Concrete substrates must be prepared mechanically using abrasive blast
cleaning or scarifying equipment to remove cement laitance and achieve
an open textured surface.
Weak concrete must be removed and surface defects such as blowholes
and voids must be fully exposed.
Repairs to the substrate, filling of blowholes/voids and surface levelling
must be carried out using appropriate products from the suitable materials.
High spots must be removed by mechanical means e.g. grinding.
All dust, loose and friable material must be completely removed from all
surfaces before application of the product, preferably by brush and/or
vacuum.
Steel and iron surfaces must be sandblasted (SA 2 ).

Application
Instructions
Mixing Prior to mixing, stir part A mechanically. When all of part B has been added to part
A, mix continuously for 2 minutes until a uniform mix has been achieved.
To ensure thorough mixing pour materials into another container and mix again to
achieve a consistent mix.
Over mixing must be avoided to minimise air entrainment.
Mixing Tools Sikagard-EPS must be mechanically mixed using an electric power stirrer (300 -
400 rpm) or other suitable equipment.

Application Method / Sikagard -EPS is applied with brush or roller, the application should be applied in
Tools two coats to ensure the required protection level

6.2. PERSONAL PROTECTION
Work Safely!
Safety shoes, gloves and other appropriate skin
protection should be worn at all times. The use of
disposable or new / clean protective clothing during the
materials preparation and application is strongly
recommended.

Always wear nitrile based protective gloves when

handling epoxy resins, as they can otherwise cause skin
irritation. Additionally apply barrier cream to hands and
any unprotected areas of skin before starting work.

Appropriate eye protection should be worn at all times

whilst handling, mixing and installing the products.
Carrying an eye wash with you at all times is
recommended.

Always wash hands with suitable soap and clean water after handling the products
and before food consumption, smoking, visiting the toilet and after finishing work.
The work area needs to be well ventilated and operatives should take frequent breaks
in fresh air to avoid any other health issues.
Silica dust produced by the grinding or blast cleaning of concrete can be hazardous.
Protect yourself and others by using a vacuum grinder or vacuum blast cleaning
equipment with dust extraction and abrasive recycling attachments respectively.
Always wear a dust mask/respirator when grinding concrete. Do not inhale the
concrete dust.
For more detailed health and safety information, please refer to the relevant Material
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
6.3. FIRST AID
If the epoxy resin based adhesive products come into contact
with eyes or mucous membranes, remove any glasses or
contact lenses and rinse with clean warm water for 10 to 15
minutes then seek medical attention. Any chemical spillages on
skin must be cleaned immediately and rinsed thoroughly with
clean warm wate .

6.4. WASTE DISPOSAL
Do not empty any surplus material into drainage or water systems;
dispose of all waste materials and packaging responsibly through
licensed waste disposal facilities or contractors, fully in accordance with
local legislation and the relevant authorities requirements. Also avoid
any chemical materials run-off into soil or into waterways, drains or
sewers.
Any uncured adhesive waste, spillages and / or leftover Sika Colma
cleaner must be disposed of as hazardous waste and according to local regulations.
Cured adhesive waste can be disposed of safely as normal building materials waste
according to local regulations.

For more detailed health and safety information, please refer to the relevant Material
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

7. PREPARATION

7.1. Substrate

Concrete substrate must be clean and sound. Remove any existing coatings, oil,
grease, dirt, dust, curing agents, impregnations, wax, laitance, coatings and bond-inhibiting
materials for the surface by appropriate means, including high-pressure water (> 11,000 psi).
the substrate must be thoroughly pre-dampened to a saturated, surface dry (SSD) condition
to prevent water loss and incomplete cement hydration when the mortar is placed.

Steel substrates must be clean, dry and stable. Remove all existing treatments, such
as coatings, sealers, wax and other contaminants such as rust, dirt, grease, oils and foreign
matter. A steel primer is recommended.

7.2. Mixing

Mixing shall always be carried out in accordance with the recommendations contained in the
latest product data sheet (PDS).
Do not use water beyond the stated maximum and minimum limits.
In determining the mixing ratio the wind strength, humidity, ambient and substrate temperature
and shall be taken into consideration.

SikagardEPS Procedures
Stir component A prior to use
Add the entire contents of component B to
component A
Using a paintbrush or spatula to scrape out residue.
Mix thoroughly with a slow speed electric stirrer
(maximum 400 rpm) for at least 3 minutes
Leave mixture to stand for approximately 3
minutes before applying.

8. APPLICATIONS
The product and system shall be appropriate for the type of substrate, structure and exposure
conditions which they are required.

8.1 BEFORE APPLICATION

Working space shall be clean and tidy with no obstructions.

Record the substrate, ambient temperature and relative humidity.
Check pot life information on bag or in the product data sheet and
allow for climatic conditions e.g. high / low temperatures & humidity.
External applications shall be adequately protected. Do not apply
mortar repair in direct sun, windy, humid or rainy conditions or if
there is a risk of frost within 24 hours in unprotected areas.
Calculate the required volume for the application and then using the
equation in section 10 of this method statement, calculate the yield of
the product. Make sure there is enough material on job site to carry
out the work.

8.2 Priming

Steel surfaces
Using Sika Zinc Rich Stir Component A very thoroughly using an electric stirrer. Add
component B and mix both components very thoroughly (including sides and bottom of the
container).

Concrete surfaces
In cases of limited exposure and normal absorbent concrete substrates priming is not
necessary but for textured substrates eg. After blast cleaning and pinholes should be sealed
using Sikadur-PF mortar or Sika gard -720 Epocem.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Priming Steel surfaces
Spray application will usually give the best results. The indicated dry-film thickness is easily
achieved by airless spray and usually also achievable by brush. Adding solvents reduces the
sag resistance and the dry-film thickness. In case of application by roller, sometimes also by
brush, additional applications may become necessary to achieve the required coating
thickness, depending on type of construction, site conditions, colour shade etc. Before
starting major coating operations, it may be useful to check with a test application on site
whether the selected application method with the specified product will provide the
requested results.

Base coat
Apply the first coat by brush or roller onto the prepared substrate. Use a consumption of
approx. 0.25 0.27 kg/m2, depending on absorbency and roughness of the substrate. Allow
to dry and harden before proceeding.
Topcoat (2nd coat)
Apply Sikagard-EPS by roller or brush as a topcoat by using a consumption of approx.
0.25kg/m2.

Waiting time between coats should not exceed 24 hours - otherwise surface must be abraded
before re-coating

Method Statement
Sikagard EPS
-8-12-16-, V.01
MS Sikagard EPS Application

7/9
Notes on Application/ Limitations
Maximum relative humidity not to exceed 85% (including overnight) Substrate
temperature should be minimum 3 C above dew-point
Waiting time between coats should not exceed 48 hours - otherwise surface must be
abraded before re-coating.
Before exposing to chemicals allow to cure completely for at least 7-9 days (depending
on temperature)
Exposure to weather and UV can result in discoloration and slight chalking. Neither
condition has any adverse effect on the protective function of the coating
