History of Krokodil
Krokodil or Crocodil was created in 2002. It is a form of desomorphine that is
made cheaper than heroin and is a popular alternative in Russia. Desomorphine
was used in Russia and Switzerland starting in 1932 as a chronic pain reliever. It is
a depressant.
How is it made?
Krokodil is created through cooking codeine and other chemicals such as red
phosphorus from matchbooks, paint thinner, and gasoline. The process is similar
to cooking methamphetamine.
Can you Develop Dependence and Tolerance to
Krokodil?
Dependence and tolerance to krokodil can be developed. It is common for heroin
and other opioid users to switch krokodil as a cheaper alternative. Withdrawal like
other opioids include craving, sweating, nausea and shallow breathing.
Effects of Krokodil
Most users do not live a long time after addiction.

Long term effects include gangrene, blood vessel damage, Meningitis, Sepsis,
amputation, bone infection, dental damage and death. yes

A short term effect is a feeling of euphoria.

Legality of Krokodil
Krokodil is a Schedule I controlled substance. Possession between is a Class I
Felony that carries 4-15 years in prison. Possession with intent to traffic,
manufacturing, or sale is a Class X Felony that carries 6-30 years in prison.
Interesting Facts
It is not a major substance in the US, the DEA has confirmed 2 cases in 2004 but
no others. Numerous state agencies have reported usage since 2010, including
Illinois.

The life expectancy for a krokodil addict is less than 2 years. That of a heroin
addict is closer to 8 years in Russia.
