LIKE + GERUND

We often use gerunds after the verbs.


Love, like,dont mind, dislike, dont like, hate, enjoy and
prefer.
We use the base form of the verb + ing to form gerunds.

He loves going to the cinema.
Do you like travelling ? Yes, I do
They hate playing games.

Definition

An infinitive is the word to plus the base form of


a verb.
It often functions as a noun, as either a subject or a
direct object.
It can also function as an adjective or adverb.
It is not a preposition.
Formula:

To + Verb
Infinitive Phrases
An infinitive phrase is a group of words that
includes an infinitive and any other words to
complete its meaning.
Ex) To fly a plane was her goal.
To fly is the infinitive (to + verb)
To fly a plane is the infinitive phrase.
Examples:

I wanted to run out the door when the teacher


announced a pop quiz.
I tried to think of an excuse, but my mind drew a
blank and so I was forced to baby-sit for my bratty
cousin.
Non-Example

I went to the store with my two year old brother,


Jake.

The above examples are not infinitives. To the


store is a prepositional phrase. two is not
to.

Verbs that take infinitives
Verb + infinitives agree, appear, decide
hope, intend, learn, offer, plan, seem, tend, wait, can
afford
Verb + Noun phrase + infinitive cause, convince,
force, invite, order, persuade, remind, tell, trust,
warn, advise, encourage
Verbs that come directly after the infinitive or have a
noun phrase ask, beg, choose, expect, need, want,
would like, promise
Gerunds often follow verbs that indicate
that an action is happening or has
happened.

The action expressed by the verb comes


at the same time or after the action
expressed by the gerund.

We enjoy going to concerts.


(you can only enjoy things you are doing or have done
not things you havent done yet.)
Infinitives often follow verbs that indicate
that an action will or could happen.

The action expressed by the verb comes


before the action expressed by the
infinitive.

We hope to go to the concert.


(You can hope for things that could happen
not things that have already happened)
