In the Bag

Initially within the bag the eyeball does

not admit any odor that can be smelt.
The eye is hard around the edges but
squishy on top. The eye looks as though
it had been air sealed tight and been
squashed down. It does not bounce well
within the bag.
An eye is composed of more than 2
The Eyeball million working parts.

Outside of the bag, the eyeball had the same

texture than before. It was hard around the
outsides and squishy on top. We were
expecting the eyeball, however, to become
more round but this did not happen. The odor
it admitted was of a mixture of horse and
iodine. Also, they eye is much more bouncy
after it was removed from the bag
The Optic Nerve
The optic nerve is surrounded by fat
and muscle. This made it hard to
locate until the muscle and fat was
cut off. It is hard and rubbery and
sticks out the posterior side of the
eye. It felt like a very stale gummy
worm and also smelt like sulfur. The
optic nerve was cut short on out eye.
The optic nerve connects the eye to
the brain.

There are approximately 1.1 million

nerve cells in each optic nerve

The Initial Cut / Aqueous Humor
When attempting to cut the eye, we could not
get the scalpel through because of the
toughness. Once the sclera was broke the
aqueous humor started to pour out like a
water balloon with a small hole in it. It
released a smell of garbage. The job of the
aqueous humor is to help maintain the shape
of the eye. Although the eye is said to be
delicate the toughness of the sclera caused us
to believe that the eye is tougher than was
initially believed.

Iris
The Iris is the coloration of eye. It is responsible for the
amount of light that is let in. It controls the adjustment
factors of the pupil and its location is in between the
cornea and the lens. The Iris is slimy and when moving it
around, glided like wet paper. It smelled like the inside of
an ambulance.

The iris has pigmentation that determines the

eye color. Irises are classified as being one of six
colors: amber, blue, brown, gray, green, hazel, or
red. Often confused with hazel eyes, amber eyes
tend to be a solid golden or copper color without
flecks of blue or green typical of hazel eyes

The Pupil
Most people believe that the pupil is actually something they can look
at but they actually are just looking into a hole in the eye. The pupil is
a hole located in the eye. It was only big enough in the decision to
allow me to put the tip of my pinkie through it. The sides around it
were smooth. The job of the pupil is to pair with the iris to control the
amount of light into the eye. The pupil gets small when in large
amounts of light to limit the light absorption and they get big in the
dark to help allow more light in so people can see in the dark. The
pupil works similar to a telescope that zooms in and out to focus on
an item

The cornea does not contain
any blood vessels, but instead
contains many nerve endings
that make it extremely
sensitive.

Cornea http://www.visionaware.org/info/your-eye-condition/eye-heal
th/anatomy-of-the-eye/125

The cornea is the see-through front of the

eye. The cornea works as a window to let the
light enter the eye. The cornea feels like
piece of stretched seran-wrap and is cloudy
in this picture because of the preservatives
that it was left in. A eyes cornea is usually
clear. It was hard yet flexible and rubbery to
touch.

The Retina
The retina is the cream colored part of the eye and the
texture is slimy and is so creamy that it can be compared to
snot. The retina is the home of the rods and cones and it
reflects the light and send the signals to the optic nerve.
The rods are what allows black and white to be seen while
the cones allow color to be seen.

The Lens
The lens receives the light from the cornea and then shines the
light to the retina. The job of the lens is to focus that light onto
the retina and help people be able to focus on objects either
close up or far away. The lens is a clear ball kinda like a clear
marble, but once we picked it up it was squishy and was more
like a water bead. The lens was slimy, squishy, jelly like, and the
texture was smooth. http://study.com/academy/lesson/lens-of-the-eye-definition-function.html
Vitreous Humor
The vitreous humor works to
keep the retina against the back
of the eye and maintains the
shape the eye. It is a clear gel
inside the eye that holds the lens.
The texture of the vitreous
humor was like hair gel.

Vitreous gel is
composed of 99%
water by weight

Sclera
The Sclera is the outermost layer of the eye.
The sclera helps to shape the eye and is a
very protective covering for injury. It also
works as a protector of the fragile inside
much like a tennis balls rubber
surrounding. It was once again rubbery and
smooth yet it tough enough that we could
squish it and it went back to its original
shape.

Choroid/Tapetum
The Tapetum is the colored part of the eye. The Tapetum is
specific to animals that need to see in the dark. The Tapetum
reflexes the light that the retina misses back into the retina so
that the animal can see in the dark. The Tapetum is like an
animals flashlight. The tapetum is a slimy layer that has a texture
similar to alge. The green arrow is pointing to the tapetum.

The Choroid is the home of the blood vessels. The Choroid

delivers oxygen and nutrition the eye needs. The Choroid is like
the refrigerator of the eye it holds all the nutrition the eye need.
The texture was like wet paper and was easily peeled back. The
purple arrow is pointing to the choroid

Red eye occurs in photos because light from the flash

bounces off the back of the eye. The choroid is located
behind the retina and is rich in blood vessels, which mak
it appear red on film.

The Muscle and Fatty
Tissue
The Muscle is how the eye has the ability to move all
around. In the top picture the muscle is the striated portion
of the eye. This muscle is the ciliary body and it connects
the iris to the choroid. It is wrinkly, slimy, and smells as of
sulfur. The bottom picture is of both muscle and fatty tissue.
The muscle is the brownish chunks and the tissue is the
white chunks. These are normally connected to the eye to
allow the eye to move around. (The blue arrow is pointed to
the fat and the red arrow is pointing to the tissue) The
chunks of tissue and muscle were tough material and was
smooth.
Posterior and Anterior Cavities
Posterior Cavity
The posterior cavity is the back side of the eye. It consists of the vitreous humor. The
posterior cavitys job is to maintain intraocular pressure and to stabilize the eyeball. It is
located behind the lens and goes to the retina. The picture of the posterior cavity is the
top picture with the blue arrows. The vitreous humor is suppose to be inside the cavity
and there is not suppose to be a lens

Anterior Cavity
The anterior cavity contains the aqueous humor and is responsible for maintaining the
eye shape. The aqueous humor is divided into two sections: anterior chamber and
posterior chamber. The anterior chamber is the cornea to the iris and the posterior
chamber is the iris to the lens. The picture with the red arrow is of the anterior cavity,
The vitreous humor does not belong in the cavity but it would not separate from the
lens.
