He was a first black president of South Africa

His inauguration took place in Pretoria on 10 May 1994


The event was attended by 4,000 guests, including world leaders from disparate
backgrounds.
He faced various ailments, and although exhibiting continued energy
Mandela's administration inherited a country with a huge disparity in wealth and services
between white and black communities.
Of a population of 40 million, around 23 million lacked electricity or adequate sanitation,
and 12 million lacked clean water supplies, with 2 million children not in school and a third
of the population illiterate. There was 33% unemployment, and just under half of the
population lived below the poverty line.
Mandela stepped down as ANC President at the party's December 1997 conference.

to improve the living conditions of black South Africans in; housing, education, health,
employment
