Sentence to Question Transformation Operations

Yes/No Questions:
1. With to be copulative simply invert the subject and verb:
a. The professor is a woman.
b. Is the professor a woman?
2. With modals as auxiliary verbs simply invert the subject and modal:
a. The professor should speak more slowly.
b. Should the professor speak more slowly?
3. With perfect aspects simply invert the subject and auxiliary to have:
a. The professor has taken attendance.
b. Has the professor taken attendance?
c. The professor had taken attendance already.
d. Had the professor taken attendance already?
4. If the verb is not the to be copulative and there is no auxiliary verb a Do Operator
must be inserted and the tense moved from the verb to the Do Operator.
a. The map shows all the continents of the world.
i. Insert do operator in the same tense as the existing verb
ii. change the existing verb to its base form
b. The map does show all the continents of the world.
i. Now you can invert the do operator and the subject

Information Questions:
1. If the question is about the subject of the sentence just put who or what at the
beginning of the question.

2. If the question is about information in the predicate and has a modal as auxiliary:
a. She should go to the concert in Dallas with her daughter
i. Replace the questioned information with the question word
b. She should go where with her daughter
i. Move the question word to the front of the sentence
c. Where she should go with her daughter
i. Now invert the subject and the auxiliary
d. Where should she go with her daughter?
3. If the question is about information in the predicate and has auxiliary to have:
a. She had gone to the concert in Dallas with her daughter last summer.
i. Replace the questioned information with the question word
b. She had gone to the concert when
i. Move the question word to the front of the sentence
c. When she had gone to the concert
i. Now invert the subject and the auxiliary
d. When had she gone to the concert?
4. If the question is about information in the predicate of the sentence:
a. She went to the concert with her daughter in Dallas.
i. Replace the questioned information with the question word
b. She went to the concert with whom in Dallas.
i. Move the question word to the front of the sentence
c. With whom (who) she went to the concert in Dallas
i. Fill the missing auxiliary verb space by inserting the do operator with the
tense of the existing verb and change the verb to base form

i. Now you can invert the subject and the auxiliary
