RESEARCH NARROWING A TOPIC EXERCISE

There is no single correct approach.

Note how each example hones in on a narrower topic by asking a series of questions.

Check to see if your examples follow a similar pattern.

Topic: The First World War

Ask a question: What about the First World War? What matters in the First World War?

Make it more specific: What matters in the First World War to Canadians?

Answer the questions: Ypres is important to Canadians.

Research your position. Look at all sides of an issue.

Refine the position to narrow the topic: The importance of Ypres to Canadians is

contested.

Topic: Social Networking

Ask a question: Does social networking help or harm us?

Make it more specific: Does Facebook help or harm us?

Research your position. Refine it to narrow the topic: Does Facebook create real

community?

A narrowed topic might be the following: Is Facebook making us lonely? Click for a

brilliant essay with this title to read some fantastic writing.

Topic: Margaret Atwoods Surfacing

What about it? Ask a question: What is really Canadian about Surfacing?

Answer the question: The setting of Surfacing makes the text Canadian

A narrowed topic might be the following: The Uniquely Canadian Setting of Margaret
