Title of Unit: Laboratory Airflow as a Form of Containment

Intended Audience: This training is intended for individuals that manage (laboratory managers)
biosafety level 3/High Containment laboratories in the Microbial Sciences Building on UW-Madisons
campus.

Terminal Objective: After completing this unit, the learner will determine whether airflow is working
properly in the laboratory using visual cues of stack lights and air pressure monitors.

Pre-instructional Strategy: Learners will be provided with an overview of the importance of proper
airflow, and consequences of failed airflow in the laboratory setting by highlighting real-life incidents
that have taken place in other high containment laboratories at the CDC. News articles by Moisse (2012)
and Young (2015), will be the primary resources for this overview.
