Common Core Sample Performance Task: Students analyze how artistic representations of Ramses II (the
pharaoh who reigned during the time of Moses) vary, basing their analysis on what is emphasized or absent in
different treatments of the pharaoh in works of art (e.g., images in the British Museum) and in Percy Bysshe
Shelleys poem Ozymandias. [RL.910.7]

Description of Student with Reading/Writing Challenges: Matthew is a ninth grade student who is
diagnosed with a specific learning disorder and has an IEP to address his disability. He is in a tiered English
class and receives supports on assessments as needed. He receives several accomodations including audio
texts, verbal responses and extended time for responding and assignments. Due to his severely immature
handwriting and written expression difficulties, he also uses his laptop or iPad to respond on written
assignments. Matthew is an enthusiastic and positive student. He enjoys school and several extra curricular
activities, including marching band and theatre. He currently reads around a fifth grade level. His
comprehension is good but is better when read to. He is highly verbal but has difficulty organizing his thoughts
and needs extra time and the opportunity to talk through his thoughts. He still struggles in writing complete
sentences and forming organized paragraphs. He is a very concrete thinker and struggles with abstract
concepts.

Question Response
What is the discrepancy between the student and He will struggle to analyze the representations beyond the
the task? purely physical attributes and struggle to connect the
differences to the literature.
What types of differentiation might be needed? Audio recordings of the poem or video of someone reading
it. Graphic organizers for recording observations. Allow
students to create visual models that represent differences
through digital resources like Google drawings.
What might an intensive personalized instruction Matthew would be highly motivated by the content of this
plan look like for this student? activity, as his current mythology class is his favorite. He
would benefit from some initial preteaching of key or
unfamiliar terms that he will encounter in the text. If it is
possible, provide images of each representation to enable
him to compare them side by side. A powerpoint
presentation of the images would allow him to make initial
observations. Next, Matthew and instructor can read the
together or he can listen to a recording. Allow Matthew to
describe the depiction of pharaoh in the poem. Matthew
should then view the presentation again and record any
new observations he sees. He will then record what is
emphasized or absent in each of the representations of the
Pharaoh on a graphic organizer and then make
comparisons among all of them. Finally, he will compare
these to the text and discus them with the instructor.
