ME630A: Home Assignment 4

April 05, 2017; 100points
Two electronic chips are mounted in a channel as shown in the Figure below. The channel walls
are thermally insulated, while the chips operate at constant temperature. To maintain the constant
temperature of the chip, cold air (Pr =0.7) flows through the channel providing mixed convective
cooling. Using stream function-vorticity approach, compute the velocity and temperature field for
steady, 2-D, laminar, flow through the channel. Use at least 40 divisions for length L

Cooling of electronic chips via mixed convective flow

(a) Write and discretize the nondimensional Equations and boundary conditions in stream-
function-vorticity form, as discussed in class
(b) Clearly write the algorithm to solve the above set of Equations using any suitable method.
(c) Solve the Equations for ReL= 10, 100 and GrL = 0, 10 (four cases).
(d) For all four cases above plot the followings: stream function contour, temperature contour,
three u-velocity profiles (x = L, 7L, 15L)
(e) One plot (includes all four cases) of skin-friction coefficient (on both y = 0, L walls) vs.
distance. If necessary, split the same in more no. of plots
(f) One plot (includes all four cases) showing local Nusselt number variation over the chips. If
necessary, split the same in more no. of plots
(g) E-mail your computer program to: jithinm@iitk.ac.in
