Unit 8 FMP Evaluation

To start off I wrote my proposal for this unit, in the proposal I considered what I was capable of and
how I could do it. So my aim was to make to things in mudbox and something in Photoshop
preferably a poster.

This was the required work:

1- Fully annotated assignment and notes. Sketchbook work documenting initial project ideas.

2- 500 word design proposal.

3- A creative brief written by you including a full schedule planner and costing.

4- A range of research resources to support your development, this should be critically analysed
through full annotation.

5- Fully documented idea generation and development (annotated).

6- Final Design pieces (minimum of three).

7- 1,500 word Evaluation.

I also considered several themes, before deciding it should be Fantasy and Futurism. The reason for
this being I like both these themes, and it gave me quite a broad range to take inspiration form. I
planned to go to some comic shops and get primary source as well as get a lot of secondary sources
online.

In the proposal I also made a time plan, and the main thing that I was determined to stick to from
that proposal was at the end of each week I would update my evaluation as it will be fresh in my
mind, and would slowly build up over time. I stuck to that very well with one or two times I didnt,
but to counter that I did it the next time I was in. besides that I believe I used my time very
effectively, although I do believe I could have done a little better as 1/3rd through I did more work as
my effort increased withy me doing several hours of work at home till early hours of the morning, I
believe the reason my effort increased was because I enjoyed what I was doing which was making
cool ideas and that I could use my own ideas.

The first thing I did after finishing my proposal was get research from the internet, as I could get a
wider array of main research to use, I then I went to get primary source research, this included
comics figures and books as well as posters the key places I got primary were Forbidden Planet and
Worlds Apart (comic stores in Liverpool) as they had the widest range of things to take inspiration
from, the main ideas I got from my research was armour, weapons, peoples roles etc. I planned to
make some basic ideas from this research, and depending how I felt about the first outcome I could
develop more into an even better idea. This research definitely influenced my initial ideas and some
even influenced my further developments

I then made some base sketches in my art book for simple ideas like basic roles e.g. tank, mage etc. I
made each role a different race to see which I could design best, my personal favourite was the
demon or the orc and possibly the undead master. I then drew some weaponry ideas for the
characters to use like axes staffs etc. This research helped me make more ideas as I researched some
old medieval weapons like long bows, pikes and war axes. I also made a couple of poster ideas like
layouts colour combinations etc. I continued doing this throughout the units progress to continue
adding ideas and developments into my book. I found working in my art book very useful as it let me
experiment with various ideas I otherwise wouldnt try, but because I did some basic ideas and
developed them further I dont think that they turned out that bad, I also believe that I have enough.

work in my art book but I always try to add more whether its ideas research it just helps me work
better knowing that I have a good book to take reference from when I start working digitally which is
what I prefer to do when it is the final product and not ideas.

I then started my weebly, I moved all of my previous work to another page and placed my proposal
at the start for people to see what I started with, I also added some research and ideas that I tried
like filters colours etc. I also added this evaluation at the end for people to see my view on this unit
and how I believe I handled it

I then went back and made some more weapon designs in my book (Page 24) and decided I like the
sword the most as it is the most versatile but Id need to work on it more as a plain sword would be
to boring for the character Im making, I also tried some face Ideas on the next page (Page 25) I did
this to see what style of face I Liked making as well as the faces I made some mask designs for the
rebels and tried various colours with them to see which one I believed suited them most.

After some developments in mudbox like various hilts, pummels, blade colours and various size
changes, I made the final sword in mudbox based on what I thought would best fit my character.

I then went through all of my art book and annotated everything, research, ideas, characters
everything. Because even though I had already annotated my work I hadnt done so for all of it. I
also did some more character Ideas based on roles in a game of Dungeons and Dragons, after I did
that I went through my book and put stats next to the characters, as it personally makes more sense
for when I talk/write about them whether it be how strong they are, smart they are or even how fast
they are. The new characters I drew were a Borc (Brutal Orc) that is a traveling Barbarian that
escaped his nest after his farther was overthrown by traitors (Page 27) , and a Human raised by Elves
that is an archer after his parents cabin was raided and found by Elves he would be faster than a
human and stronger than an elf but slower than an elf and the same strength as a human as the only
reason he is faster is because he was raised by the elves (page 23 the basic idea and 26 more
developed). I then went over all my writing in fine liner/pen as it was hard to read in pencil as it
smudges when the pages are closed. I plan on adding a background for each character as it helps tell
who they are as I already put the elf in a forest so I plan on doing something like this for each of
them.

I then tried several ideas of posters in Photoshop including crowns and soldier ideas, the reason I
used Photoshop and not illustrator or any other software is because I feel more comfortable with
Photoshop as I have previously worked in it from my last course I like the fact that once you know
the basics its very easy to use.

The main poster that I made and I liked most was the one which had a base of black and white which
made the shape of the soldiers helmet with some red words saying Join today although I did try
each one with several filters to see which was best but I still found that I liked this poster the most.

I then saved all of my finals into a folder ready to be uploaded and marked. I believe I handled this
unit very well as I loved all of my outcomes and even printed of my poster twice one to be mounted
and one to take home. If I did this unit again I would work even harder as I believe if I really pushed
myself I could have gotten a distinction I believe that I would have come in every (working) day to
get the most amount of work done within the given time, If I were to improve my outcome I believe I
would work more on my knight and sword as personally I see nothing wrong with my poster I would
work on the knights armour a little bit more maybe adding a few more details like perhaps a dragon
or some kind of sigil on the chest and shoulders.
