Lesson Idea Name: Is this a function?

Content Area: Algebra
Grade Level(s): 9

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.A.REI.10 Understand that the graph of an equation in two variables
is the set of all its solutions plotted in the coordinate plane. MGSE9- 12.F.IF.1 Understand that a function from
one set (the input, called the domain) to another set (the output, called the range) assigns to each element of
the domain exactly one element of the range, i.e. each input value maps to exactly one output value. If f is a
function, x is the input (an element of the domain), and f(x) is the output (an element of the range). MGSE
9- 12.S.ID.1 MGSE9- 12.S.ID.6 Represent data on two quantitative variables on a scatter plot, and describe
how the variables are related. Represent data with plots on the real number line(dot plots, histograms, and
box plots). MGSE9- 12.S.ID.6a Decide which type of function is most appropriate by observing graphed data,
charted data, or by analysis of context to generate a viable (rough) function of best fit. Use this function to
solve problems in context. Emphasize linear, quadratic and exponential models

Technology Standard Addressed: 3d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems,
developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions; 6c. communicate complex ideas clearly
and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations;
7c. contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work effectively
toward a common goal; 7d. explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with
others to investigate solutions

Selected Technology Tool: SAS

Lesson idea implementation: In previous lessons students explored linear functions through word problems.
They wrote their own problems as determined by personal and group interest and they considered multiple
ways of answering comparisons about functions. Next students will use real-world data to create a scatterplot
to examine if a linear relationship exists between their variables of interest. They will also consider if that
linear relationship is a function or merely a relation. For this lesson, they will review their understanding of
the formal definition of a function.

As students transition from their made-up word-problem scenarios, they will search for/be given available
data sets that relate to their topic of interest. Next, the students will import the data sets into SAS and use a
code templet to create a scatterplot. The SAS coding and computing will take less than an hour to complete.
Students experienced or interested in coding can create colored and labeled plots as an extension. Finally,
students will present their plots and findings to the class as PowerPoint videos, presentations, or posters.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
Students will be assessed on their ability to analyze their scatterplots. Were they correct in identifying if this
was a linear plot? Were they correct in identifying a relation or a function? Feedback will be given by peer and
teacher comment cards and questions.
