PTV VISSIM EXAMPLE DESCRIPTION

RIGHT TURN ON RED (EUROPE)

Short description
Signalized right turn movement which allows for passing at red light also (European
design).

Objective
In Europe, right turning on red signals is allowed only at junctions where it is clearly
indicated by dedicated traffic signs. These signs vary from country to country. In Germany
for example, an additional traffic sign (green arrow, German: Grnpfeil) is mounted
adjacent to the corresponding signal head.
If indicated, right turning on a red signal is legally allowed if it does not hinder any
conflicting vehicle or pedestrian flows:
First, the vehicle needs to stops at the stop line.
Then it may cautiously proceed to up to the beginning of the conflicting movement
where it has to stop again if conflicting vehicles or pedestrians are present.
Only if the driver ensured that conflicting movements are neither present nor will they
be hindered as he enters, he may continue the right turn.
This example shows a right turn on red situation for vehicles approaching the intersection
from the western leg.

Modelling technique
In PTV Vissim such a right turn on red behavior is modelled with
a stop sign,
one or more conflict areas for the conflicting movements and
an optional signal head.
For the stop sign the attribute OnlyOnRed needs to be active and the corresponding
signal group and signal control selected. While this signal group is green, the stop sign
becomes ineffective. A vehicle will stop at the stop sign only if the signal group is red.
After stopping it will proceed to the stop line of the next subsequent conflict area and

watches for any conflicting vehicle/pedestrian movement. Only if no such
vehicles/pedestrians are present, the vehicle will drive on.
While a signal head is not needed at the location of the stop sign, it may be useful for
visualization purposes (for display of the current state of the signal group or the stop line
(3D)). However, then you need to ensure, that the signal head does not block vehicles
while showing red. This is done by changing the relevant vehicle classes to a class that
will not pass on that link (e.g. Pedestrian).
