power plant?( not mandatory)

Ans: It is designed below:

Design of the proposed Solar-Diesel Hybrid Power System
(Data are assumed as per Standard value)
A Hybrid Power system is that power supply system which utilizes two or more power sources.
This helps in improving the reliability of the system as there is less reliance on one method of
power production. Solar Diesel Hybrid System utilizes solar and Diesel as the power supply and
battery as the power backup. A Power converter system is an important component of Hybrid
System that controls the power supply and power backup system in the most efficient manner.
The Figure below shows the indicative configuration of the proposed Solar-Diesel Hybrid Power
system.

Figure: Technical Configuration of the proposed Hybrid System

The heart of the system is the Power Converter which will form the Grid and will be the
Master of the system. On DC power supply side, it will have connection to the battery
and the Solar PV (through a charge controller). DC side is depicted by blue line. On AC
Power supply side, it is connected to Diesel Genset and it can also be connected to an
external solar inverter. Diesel Genset is connected through a switch which can be made
ON and OFF as per the system requirement. AC side is depicted by red line. The Grid
Master will keep an eye on the frequency of the system with the following logic:

If frequency > 50 hz, this means that the Supply is more than Demand
If frequency <50 Hz, this will mean that Demand is more than Supply
According to frequency values, Power Converter will regulate the Diesel Genset and
the Loads. Solar PV will be designed in such a way that it will never be more then
demand.
The above system is modular in nature. With any possible future load growth, system
size can be increased by adding extra modules formed by the Power Converter is
connected to loads. There can be separate connection to Critical load or Non Critical
load where Non Critical Load can be switched OFF or ON as per the system
requirements. For example, there can be an additional power converter in parallel to
Power Converter, however this additional module will be synchronized with the
frequency of Power Converter.

Design according to given load data:

1. Power Consumption Demand

Total Appliance used= (250 kW x 23hours) + (377 kW x 1 hour)= 6127 kWh/day

Multiplying the total appliances Watt-hours per day times 1.3 (the energy lost in the
system) to get the total Watt-hours per day which must be provided by the panels.

Total PV panels energy needed = 6127*1.3 = 7965.1 Wh/day

2. Sizing of the Solar PV Panel

Different size of PV modules will produce different amount of power. To find out the
sizing of PV module, the total peak watt produced needs. The peak watt (Wp) produced
depends on size of the PV module and climate of site location. We have to consider
panel generation factor which is different in each site location. I have assumed the
panel generation factor as 3.43.

Total Wp of PV panel capacity needed= 7965.1/3.43 = 2322.18 Wp

Let, The system will be powered by 24 Vdc, 250 Wp PV module
Number of PV panels needed= 2322.18/250= 9.2 modules
Actual requirement= 10 modules
So this system should be powered by at least 10 modules of 250 Wp PV module.
3. Inverter Sizing
An inverter is used in the system where AC power output is needed. The input rating of the
inverter should never be lower than the total watt of appliances. The inverter must have the same
nominal voltage as battery.
For stand-alone systems, the inverter must be large enough to handle the total amount of Watts
we will be using at one time. The inverter size should be 25-30% bigger than total Watts of
appliances. In case of appliance type is motor or compressor then inverter size should be minimum
3 times the capacity of those appliances and must be added to the inverter capacity to handle surge
current during starting.
For grid tie systems or grid connected systems, the input rating of the inverter should be same as
PV array rating to allow for safe and efficient operation.

Total Watt of all appliances = 377 kW

For safety, the inverter should be considered 25-30% bigger size.
The inverter size should be about 471.25 kW or greater.

4. Battery Sizing
The battery type recommended for using in solar PV system is deep cycle battery. Deep
cycle battery is specifically designed for to be discharged to low energy level and rapid
recharged or cycle charged and discharged day after day for years. The battery should be
large enough to store sufficient energy to operate the appliances at night and cloudy days.

Battery Capacity (Ah) = Total Watt-hours per day used by appliances x Days of autonomy
(0.85 x 0.6 x nominal battery voltage)

Battery loss=0.85

Depth of discharge=0.6

Total appliances use = 6127 kWh

Nominal battery voltage = 24 V
Days of autonomy = 1 day

Battery capacity = 6127 x1

(0.85 x 0.6 x 24)

Total Ampere-hours required 500.57 Ah

So the battery should be rated 24 V 600 Ah for 1 day autonomy.
5. Solar charge Controller Sizing

Power Converter is the central unit which controls the power generation, energy storage
and interacts with the load. The size of the Power Converter should be equal to the
maximum power requirement of load at any point of time. Therefore Wattage of Power
Converter should be equivalent to Pmax (with a flexibility of 5% over capacity).
However, if the Solar Fraction is zero, we will only utilize Diesel Genset and therefore
Power Converter will not be used.
The solar charge controller is typically rated against Amperage and Voltage capacities.
The solar charge controller should be selected to match the voltage of PV array and
batteries and then identify which type of solar charge controller is right for our
application. We should be sure that solar charge controller has enough capacity to handle
the current from PV array.
For the series charge controller type, the sizing of controller depends on the total PV
input current which is delivered to the controller and also depends on PV panel
configuration (series or parallel configuration).
According to standard practice, the sizing of solar charge controller is to take the short
circuit current (Isc) of the PV array, and multiply it by 1.3
Solar charge controller rating = Total short circuit current of PV array x 1.3
Remark: For MPPT charge controller sizing will be different.
Further Number of Power Converters= Pmax/ Maximum AC Power of available Power
Converter.

Solar charge controller rating = (10 strings x 9.8 A) x 1.3 = 127.4 A

So the solar charge controller should be rated 128 A at 24 V or greater.

6. Sizing of the Diesel Genset

The size of the Diesel Genset should be equal to the maximum power requirement of
load (Pmax) at any point of time. If the Solar fraction is between 0 and 0.5, I have
considered Size of Diesel Genset to be Pmax. In case, solar fraction is 0.5 or more then
I have considered size of Genset as 50% of the Pmax. The size will have a flexibility of
5% over capacity.
So size of diesel genset=380 kW.

It is to be noted that I have not considered any effect of Power Factor in my calculations.
