Driver and Traffic Safety Education

New York State mission statement:


The Driver and Traffic Safety Education course is designed to educate New York States new drivers by
promoting safe, courteous, defensive and alcohol/drug-free driving.

New York State Education Department Requirements:

1. The course must provide each student with a minimum of twenty-four (24) clock hours of classroom instruction
and a minimum of twenty-four (24) clock hours of laboratory instruction.
Laboratory instruction must include a minimum of six (6) clock hours of actual behind-the-wheel practice
driving and a minimum of six (6) clock hours of in-car observation
The remaining twelve (12) hours of laboratory instruction may include a combination of additional behind-
the-wheel instruction, additional in-car observation, simulation instruction, and/or range instruction.

2. A student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) will be issued to students who:


Successfully complete an approved NY-DTSE course;
Achieve a grade of 65 or better in classroom instruction and 65 or better in laboratory instruction (this is
not an average of both. Each must be passed individually of each other)
Meet the 24 hour classroom and 24 hour laboratory course attendance requirements.

3. As per NYS Driver Education Laws, a student may not participate in more than one classroom and one
laboratory (car) instructional period per day.

Materials needed: Notebook, writing utensils, binder or folder for handouts, textbook Drive Right 11 th edition

Expectations: Attend all class room and in car sessions, be on time, be alert and engaged, do all reading
assignments, and take this class in the serious nature for which it is taught. Quizzes will be given. No sleeping in
the class room or car session!!!

Attendance and Make-ups:

1. Class begins on TBD Daily attendance is mandatory for the next17 days (Monday thru Friday). Day 17 (TBD) is
for handing out certificates and any make-ups. TBD will be utilized if I have an emergency and have to take
a day off during the session, otherwise it will not be used. But you must be available if need be. Do not miss
unless it is an emergency. We do not have any extra days to make-up classes. More than 1 miss in class and
1 miss in car will result in you not receiving the MV-285 certificate.
