The Jackson Family To Perform

At Pleasant View Missionary Church
The Jackson Family will be appearing in concert at Pleasant View Missionary Church, 5231
Gettysburg-Pitsburg Rd., Greenville, on Sunday, Aug. 15, at 8:30 a.m. and again at 10:45 a.m.
This family of talented performers brings new meaning to the concepts of togetherness and musical
excellence. Parents Bruce and Brenda are joined by four children in rich vocal harmony and instrumen-
tal music. The children, who range in age from 25 down to 14, have delighted audiences around the world
with energetic musical styles which lift up traditional family values. They have toured extensively in the
U.S. as well as Asia, and their recent history-making appearances in Saigon and Hanoi, Vietnam, before
crowds of more than 40,000 have helped to fuel a growing Christian revival in that nation.
The Jackson Family will be presenting a concert which features both original and familiar songs.
Original compositions have become a hallmark with the Jacksons, who have a passion for addressing cur-
rent issues and family relationships. Their songs deal with such issues as marriage, parenting, forgiveness,
and restoration. Brittany and Brent have recorded a song called “I Will Wait for You” that boldly con-
fronts today’s youth with its straightforward message of sexual abstinence before marriage. Foundational
to all the subject matter in their music, they stress the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
and the truth of the Bible.

Where did July go?
One minute you're watching fireworks, and the next minute it's football season. Listen
up, twenty and thirty year olds – the older you become, the faster time flies.
Friends of ours just returned from a two-week venture (by auto) to the great Rocky
Mountain states. They actually combined business with pleasure. With this in mind,
and the way the economy seems to moving like a snail – I thought it would be a good
idea to suggest some day trips right here in Ohio or neighboring states. I'm giving you
my top five list. Drum roll, please.
1. Columbus, Ohio - Ohio’s capital and largest city, with a metropolitan area touching
seven counties, covering 3,584 square miles, and including almost 1.4 million resi-
dents. Columbus offers a diverse ethnic mix, with no one group dominating, as evi-
denced by its German Village area south of downtown and its Italian and Victorian
Village areas just north of downtown. And don't forget the mighty Buckeyes! Great
museums, shopping and entertainment. Plus, there’s fine and not-so-fine dining.

Emily Katafiasz, 15, has become the third in her family to earn the
second highest award that a Girl Scout can earn. She joins sisters Angela
and Denise as a recipient of the Girl Scout Silver Award. Emily is a
freshman at Covington High School and a member of Senior Girl Scout
Troop 30144. Less than 10 percent of Girl Scouts earn the Silver Award.
For her Silver Award project, Emily realized that the Junior Girl
Scout badge, Horse Fan, is particularly difficult to earn due to the lack
of resources available to many troops. Being a horse owner and lover,
she wanted to share her enthusiasm for all things equine with other girls.
As a solution, she developed and gathered the materials needed to com-
plete all 10 activities for the Junior Horse Fan badge and presented huge
binders to the resource rooms of all four regional offices of Girl Scouts
of Western Ohio as well as the Carriage Hill riding facility. These
binders can now be borrowed by troop leaders or girls to help them earn EMILY KATAFIASZ
the badge. Girl Scout Silver Award Winner
In a ceremony held this past spring at the University of Dayton
Kennedy Union Ballroom, Emily became one of only 26 girls to earn the Silver Award in the Buckeye
Trails Region of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Tammy Proctor. A
former Girl Scout and a Professor of History at Wittenberg University specializing in modern European
and women’s history, she is the author of three books about women, the most recent being Scouting for
Girls: A Century of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Dr. Proctor offered many anecdotes about the early
building of the Girl Guide and Scouting movement and congratulated the awardees on their achievement.
Thank You from the Relay for Life Team
The Miami County Relay was once again hindered by rain, wind storms, and cold, but the event was
a success in our fight for a cure for cancer. As we were all ushered into a building to weather a particu-
larly nasty storm, the luminary ceremony was taking place. How poignant to hear the fury of Mother
Nature outside as we stood together to fight a disease that can show fury of its own.
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Relay for Life team would like to extend Thank You’s to the fol-
lowing:

Helsinger, Milton-Union Middle School, the Milton-Union Council of Churches, Pastor Mel, to anyone

many people worked to make this our most successful effort ever.
2. Cincinnati, Ohio - a funky downtown with 1920s and ‘30s architecture, pocket
parks, and outdoor sculptures; two major league sports teams; and impressive venues

Center, which draws top-name acts. Visitors can explore Fountain Square in the heart
of the city (on Fifth Street, between Walnut and Vine) or get the best views of downtown
and the Ohio River from nearby Mt. Adams, a happening place with unique shopping,
clubs, and restaurants. Fans of the arts will find plenty at the Cincinnati Ballet, the
Cincinnati Opera (the second oldest in the United States), the Cincinnati Pops and the
Symphony Orchestra, and the world-famous Playhouse in the Park. Or you can cross
over the state line for gambling at the Argosy Casino and Hotel in Lawrenceburg or the
Grand Victoria Casino and resort. How about a ferry boat ride down the Ohio river?
3. Hocking Hills, Ohio - The history of the Hocking Hills is in its rocks. Glaciers flat-
tened much of the rest of Ohio, but not the Hocking Hills. The area is filled with rock
formations, waterfalls, caves, and deep woods that more closely resemble the mountains
of neighboring West Virginia than flat Ohio farmland. The glaciers changed Ohio’s cli-
mate, even in places they hadn’t reached, to a cool, moist environment. Just rent a
small cabin, and let the kids run. Supervised, of course.
4. Lake Erie - The Lake Erie island area is a sporting paradise, even during the cold
months when ice fishing occurs. Thanks to high nutrient levels and warm tempera-
tures, its shores team with walleye, small mouth bass, yellow perch, freshwater drum,
crappie, white bass, and more. Don’t forget to purchase a fishing license, and be aware
of the daily limits, which vary according to type of fish. The area’s also chock-full of
birds: herons and egrets as well as migratory warblers, to the tune of more than 300
species. Prime spots include Kelley's Island and South Bass Island. There are also
enough restaurants, shopping, and historical sites to keep even the most seasoned trav-
eler occupied. You can party in the bustling town of Put-in-Bay and on Kelley's Island,
or have fun with the whole family at parks, monuments, and museums. Once you
arrive, getting around the islands is made easy by a variety of bike and golf cart rental
companies, which are usually located within walking distance of the ferry.
5. Adams County - The region consists of several small towns and rural areas amid
mostly untouched, gently rolling land. Some might call it Amish Lite: About seventy Old
Order families can be found in the villages of Unity and Harshaville, which are so
small they fail to appear on a conventional map (they’re in the Wheat Ridge area near
West Union). So you’ll need to watch for buggies and cap the camera, unless permission

Classmates and friends of the Class of 1960 of Bradford High School celebrated their 50th anniversary
over the weekend of May 16. Over 48 alumni attended one or more of the three activities held. The class
also contributed over $1100 to the BEVS Scholarship Fund.
On Friday evening former teachers Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ashworth and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Warner were
guest of the class at a buffet dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Weimer and Mr. John Slonaker, also teachers,
were guests of the class at the Alumni dinner on Saturday evening. The class also received warm greet-
ings from former faculty member, Phyllis Pitsenbarger Ferange of Arizona and Mr. Paul Polly of
Kentucky. Sunday’s event was a lunch at the home of Joyce and Larry Heisey in Troy.
Classmates came from as far away as Ecuador, Florida, and South Carolina to enjoy the reunion and
renew friendships. They decided that 50 years – or even 5 years – was too long to wait for the next reunion
and agreed to meet annually on the Alumni weekend.

Donates Bear to Covington Rescue Squad
On Monday, May 17, the girls in Daisy Girl
Scout Troop #30766 donated a Build-A-Bear stuffed
bear to the Covington Rescue Squad.
Throughout the year, the girls have been learning
about different ways to serve others. During a spe-
cial field trip to Build-A-Bear Workshop, the girls
decided to make an extra bear that they could give
away. When the troop leaders told the troop that the
Covington Rescue Squad gives stuffed animals to
the children they transport, the girls were excited to
know that the bear they made would eventually be
given to someone in our community.
Inside the donated bear are five hearts which
were each filled with love by the Daisies. The troop
earned money for the field trip and the donated bear
by selling Girl Scout cookies.
The troop would like to thank the Covington
Rescue Squad for giving them a tour of the ambu-
lance while they were at the station.
