Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the study of national holidays, specifically Presidents Day, by using the Brain
Pop video, Abraham Lincoln. The teacher will test the students prior knowledge of Abraham Lincoln before
displaying the video by probing the following questions- Who is Abraham Lincoln? What do you know about
him? Why is he important? The teacher will ask the students to record one new fact that they learn after
watching the video.

The students will then be encouraged to share the facts they learned from the video with the classroom.
The teacher will record their answers on an Anchor chart. The teacher then can display the facts given on the
classroom blog. The students will then create a summary of who Abraham Lincoln using the facts recorded on
the Anchor chart and draw a picture of him to serve as a cover page. The summary and picture will serve as a
ticket out the door.
This lesson should take 30-50 minutes. The students learning will be assessed based on the quality of facts
given to the teacher. Student learning will be extended to a higher learning level by allowing them to continue
to explore more about Abraham Lincoln through given websites from the teacher if they have completed
their summary and picture early. Teacher will edit the summaries and provide feedback to students.
