Sociological Factors:
Sociological factors are influences in society that influence us, others and societies views on
all things e.g. how society views females in sport.

Two influences on the view of females in sport include historical view (In eras gone by
women were seen as too delicate for sport) and the Cultural view (Different cultures have
different roles for females).

Your job in this unit is to examine critically the importance of the 2016 Rio Olympics to you
(self), others and society and how these sociological factors influence the importance or
effect.
To do this you will use the SPEECH framework. This is a way of making sure you look at the
event from all perspectives.

Assessment Task
Examine Critically the significance to Self, Others and Society of the 2017 Americas
Cup.

Critical Examination involves explaining the interrelationship between relevant sociological

factors and the significance of the 2017 Americas Cup (or Similar), for self, others and
society by:

identifying assumptions
identifying who is advantaged and disadvantaged
considering pros and cons (PMI analysis)
making judgements and providing supporting evidence
You will also be assessed on how fully and logically you support your reasons with
evidence.

Presenting your evidence:

- Seminar style presentation to Examine Critically the significance to Self, Others

and Society of the 2017 Americas Cup.
- Your presentation will be during exam week (specific dates TBC)
- Supporting evidence such (PowerPoint slides, video clips, prezzi, interview clips etc)
should be used to strengthen your arguments.

evidence you include in your presentation.

our national sport and because it
gives us a chance to see the best
rugby teams in the world playing.
I am going to enjoy watching New
Zealand progress because rugby is
my favourite sport and it will be
good to see the way that teams
from different parts of the world
play rugby. I hope our school has
some TVs set up so we can watch
games in our break times. This will
provide an opportunity to really
develop school spirit by fostering
national pride. Even my friend who
plays football is looking forward to
the Rugby World Cup. He reckons
that it will be hyped up by the media
and will be quite exciting with all the
people around. He is from Samoa
and is really looking forward to the
cup as his street has decided to
enter the best dressed street

Example
The Rugby World Cup was first held in 1987 and was
jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Winning
the first Rugby World Cup was also the last time New
Zealand won it, and we have had a love-hate
relationship with this event ever since. We have been
waiting 24 years to regain the cup, and everyone
remembers George Gregan when he said 4 more
years as NZ saw yet another RWC winning
opportunity slip past them.
The significance of the Rugby World Cup varies
between people. For me, a rugby fan, I am really
excited about having all the different teams here in
New Zealand, watching and talking rugby with my
friends and family, and hopefully going to some of the
games. I am planning on getting tickets to France vs
Japan as tickets are as cheap as $40 and although it
is not the All Blacks I think it will be a memory that
will last with me forever being a part of this huge
event.
Going to other games might be an issue because the
cost of tickets is high ($400 to All Blacks vs France at
Eden park). So while I might get a better atmosphere
at the games, I will have to weigh up the cost versus
the convenience of watching them on TV.
My family are divided as to how important the Rugby
World Cup is to them. My father is concerned about
how he will get to work on time and if his employees
will actually come to work when big games are on.
He is based in the Viaduct which will be the home of

From humble beginnings the event has become a multi-million dollar
exercise.

It is not only the opportunity to gather all the rugby playing nations in
the world in one place, but it is also seen as an opportunity to
expand the sport into markets traditionally dominated by other winter
codes.

(When critically discussing the significance for self, others and
society for excellence, it would be useful to select 3 or 4 major
points and consider them in depth and from a range of different
perspectives rather than trying to cover all factors superficially):
When New Zealand is hosting the RWC, it is of great significance to
me as I am a rugby player, coach and fan. This is rugby at its best
on the world stage and I have the opportunity to go and see and
learn from watching some of the great players.
I am really excited about having all the different teams here in New
Zealand, watching and talking rugby with my friends and family, and
award. They are intending to
decorate their houses/street in their
national flags and colours. He
thinks this will give him a real sense
of pride for his home land. Many
people I have talked to are hoping
that the All Blacks do better this
time. Dad is looking forward to
going to the games with his mates.
He has tickets to the All Black pool
games and is taking a few days of
work to go and see them. I am
going to the games as well. This
means that I get a few days off
school. I think lots of people will be
absent from school while the World
Cup is on as they will be watching it
on TV or going to the games. I
know our 1st XV is going to watch
the All Blacks play Wales at the
park to build team morale and to
learn from watching high-quality
performances.
People say that the RWC will be
good for New Zealand because the
rugby fans coming from overseas to
watch will spend their money here.
The NZ Herald has stated that an
estimated..tourists are expected
into NZ and this could equate to an
additional $......for our economy.

extreme. He is also thinking about buying tickets to
take us to at least one game. He is looking forward to
going to the games with his mates. He has tickets to
the All Black pool games and is taking a few days off
work to go and see them. He thinks that this is an
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and his boss has
supported the hype of this event by allowing them to
finish work early on these days. I know our 1st XV is
going to watch the All Blacks play Wales at the park
to build team morale and to learn from watching high-
quality performances. This means they will miss a
day of school. Exams are on around this time, so it
may have an effect on their grades.
From talking to people in my neighbourhood and
reading newspapers, the New Zealand dollar is one
of the big talking points around the 2011 RWC, for
example, the cost of the tickets(eg. $700 for finals
ticket), accommodation costs getting out of control
(student would insert example here from newspaper
articles), and the media who are trying to entice
people into the excitement as well as trying to drive
down costs by suggesting that people wont come to
New Zealand if we get too greedy (student would put
quotes from research in here). Managing this big
event is a balancing act that New Zealand has to get
right if the 2011 RWC can be remembered as a
success for New Zealand and not just a success for
the All Blacks. New Zealand has faced a lot of
tragedy this year and a failed world cup hosting
campaign would not be an ideal outcome for the
economic, political or emotional state of the country
(student could add research examples here to
support this statement).

than just the positives of the excitement the event is generating for
me.

For example: routes to school, holiday terms changing, wanting to
go to games that arent in local area, difficulty/ease in accessing
tickets, prices.
The significance of New Zealand hosting the RWC to others has
been well documented in papers so far. Many people are
capitalising on the financial gains to be made from renting out their
houses during this period.

However, people also need to be aware of the loopholes in doing
this

and the damage it has potentially made to the image of New
Zealand as greedy individuals make attending RWC even more
unrealistic for many who cant afford tickets, airfares,
accommodation, etc.
It will be exciting for New Zealand to have all the rugby teams
playing here because of the atmosphere and excitement that major
sporting events can generate. For serious rugby fans, the RWC will
be an opportunity to see great rugby being played. But for those
who dont like rugby or who believe that rugby already dominates
our society and culture too much, these two months will be tough
going. We will all be bombarded with blanket advertising on TV and
radio news bulletins that focus on rugby, newspaper articles about
rugby, and many conversations about rugby. There will also be
difficulty in getting around cities because of more people and traffic.

Could also look at and expand and challenge any of the following

Foreign students being able to follow their teams
Cost of Sky
Remote areas do they feel a part of it? Stadium of 4 million
people
Is it actually in our blood?
National sport
Small towns hosting teams (games around many centres)
Rates Dunedin and Christchurch paying for indoor stadiums
Auckland residents, some public and some privately funded
Morale, mood, social, anxiety.

So will it be worth it?

A year out from the Cup, opinion is divided and controversy has
followed it for at least two years.
People disagree about whether hosting the RWC will be worth it for
New Zealand. In reality we will not know until after the event. Even
then, I think that opinion of its significance will depend on peoples
own experiences and how they have been advantaged or
disadvantaged by the event.
Currently there is a range of perspectives on the significance of the
RWC for society. People are so focused on New Zealand winning in
their own country however the question on Martin Sneddons mind is
whether New Zealand is mature enough to realise this is a global
event and that it is not designed to showcase the All Blacks.
(Student continues the debate on winning being most important
thing for society versus global promotion being the most important
thing for society.)
 Other things that student could address in terms of significance to
society are:
Stadium location, cost to rate payers, filling venues with games
being played by smaller nations, can we live up to stadium of 4
million?

New Zealand as a tourist destination. Synergy between Rugby
NZ 2011 and New Zealand Tourism
The role of rugby in the New Zealand culture, will we defeat
graciously or reinforce the belief among many nations that we are
poor losers?
The amount of money being spent in a time of recession and
economic hardship
Nostalgia New Zealands last chance to host too big?
Will we achieve goals of promoting and showcasing rugby to non-
rugby dominated markets?

Final grades will be decided using professional judgement based on a holistic examination of the evidence provided against the criteria in the
Achievement Standard.
