Spent the day shadowing Dr. Lane, the superintendant of Chesterfield
County Public Schools. We went to a Metropolitan Educational
Research Consortium (MERC) meeting with other counties that was
held at the VCU School of Education building. During that meeting,
the members discussed projects that have been going on such as the
Teacher Morale Survey, research towards Achieving Racial Equity in
School Diciplinary Policies and Practices, and the podcasts being pupil assessment,
created for teachers. There was also some discussion regarding the program assessment,

members could come and hear about the budget for the county and
schools. There were representatives there from fire, police, Board of
Superisors, school board, and the planning commission. This was a
meeting for folks to ask questions and get answers regarding budget
items. Dr. Lane was there to answer any school division questions.

Article 2: Goodbye Core Subjects, Hello Well-Rounded Education

After spending the afternoon attending a meeting with the Chesterfield County Superintendent, I decided to find an article that had some information about the Every Student Suceeds Act
(ESSA). One of the hot topics during the MERC meeting was about how the implications of this new federal mandate would affect our state. I found this article in the National Education
Association website journal talking about the hope that non-core teachers have when it comes to this new act. A social studies teacher who was interviewed said that No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) made the teaching profession one that was focused on high stakes test and accountability. It was difficult to allow time for students to delve deeper into a subject that interested
them because there was no time. Reading and math became the focus and other areas of learning such as the arts, technical learning, and physical education were not as important.
Leaders seem to think that the references to "core academic subjects" in the NCLB Act are now replaced in the ESSA with wording such as "well -rounded education". The act specifically
says that the arts, languages, sciences, and government are part of a well-rounded education. The ESSA will allow states to come up with their own methods to assess accountability so that
testing is not at the forefront of education. It is also interesting to see that the ESSA has a grant for funds to help with lower income / disadvantaged areas in getting access to strong
curriculum. The last part of the article encourages stakeholders such as teachers and parents to stay informed on how your state is going to carryout the expectations of ESSA. Now is the
time to let your superintendent and Department of Education leaders know what you feel is most important in education today. As I learned in the meeting I attended, the school leaders in
Virginia are still not sure where the state will take this new act. It is still being discussed at the state level and has not made it down to the local level yet. I will be interested in seeing where
this goes, especially with the arts and my interests in STEAM/STEM education.
