Title: Expository Poster

Objective(s)
I can use facts from an expository text to create an informational poster.

Materials
Tornadoes! by Gail Gibbons
Sheet of computer paper
Pencil
Color pencils/Marker/Crayons

Description of book:
This book is all about tornadoes. You learn about how they from, the scale meteorologist
measure them, where tornado alley is located, and even what to do if a tornado is approaching
your home.

Introduction
TW show clip of a tornado and ask the students if they know what the name of this type
of natural disaster is.
SW write down their answer on a post-it note and then paste their answer on the
whiteboard.
TW look over student responses, and then provide the correct answer.
Develop
TW read Tornadoes! by Gail Gibbons to the whole class.
o TW asks modernist, transactional, and critical questions before, during, and after
the read aloud.
After the read aloud TW write the different classifications of tornadoes on the whiteboard
and review the qualities that make it a EF-0, EF-1, EF-2, EF-3, EF-4, or EF-5.
SW then discuss with their table group what safety precautions need to be taken if a
tornado is approaching their home.
o TW then call on each group to provide one safety tip, and write those facts on the
board.
TW then explain that they are going to be making an informational poster about
tornadoes and how to stay safe.
o TW write on the board the requirements for the poster.

Poster needs to be neat
TW pass out a blank piece of computer paper and color pencils/markers/crayons.
SW then begin working on their expository poster.
Closure
TW ask the class if they know of any other natural disasters.
o SW partake in stand-up-hand-up-pair-up to complete this activity.
When they meet up with a partner they will each share one natural disaster
and then move on to the next partner.
Students will have 30 seconds to complete this activity.
Assessment
Classwork (Formative) Students facts and safety procedures listed correctly on the
poster. How neat and colorful the poster is.
