The line graph presents the birth, death and the population growth rates of Scotland from
1940 with projections towards 2020. The most prominent feature was that the country's
population was on the steady decline since 1955 and stopped growing altogether by
around the mid-2000s.

The birth rate of Scotland dropped from 2.5 per cent in 1940 and never returned to that
mark ever since. Except for two brief periods of very modest recovery (1945-1950, 1965-
1968), the country's birth rate plunged to roughly one per cent in 1960. Since the 70s, the
birth rate of Scotland was on a continuing downward trend to well below one per cent
around the 2010s. The trend is forecast to remain unchanged towards 2020.

Your favourite city to visit (IELTS Speaking Part 2)
Singapore is renowned for its futuristic architecture with a lot of towers and sky-scrapers.
It is also considered the greenest country in the Asia. You know, I was stunned when I

they bring trees, plants from all far-away corners of the world and put them all in one place.

Let me tell you about a film I watched recently, Matchpoint by Woody Allen, starring Scarlett
Johansson. The beginning is not very interesting/appealing; in fact, the first ten minutes was boring, but
after that, the film waslikemagic, it held me spellbound to the very end.
About the film, it's a complicated relationship between a man and two of his lovers. One he got married
with and became his wife. And another who was desperately in love with him but the affair was totally a
secret.
But there were twists which made the film unpredictable and made me love it. That was when the man
killed his secret lover, he was so consumed by the wealth of his wife's family. But after many twists and
turns, he went through all safe and sound, even when his crime was nearly discovered, he made a
unthinkable escape.
The film maker did a brilliant job in conveying a message of life and luck. Sometimes things happen,
and we need to accept it. It's just a matter of luck orbad luck. Like a line I learned from the film:
moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward
or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose.

Task 2: Childrens education is expensive. In some countries, the government pay some of
or all of the costs. Do the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?
Body 2
Despite above considerations, I am convinced that supporting families in paying for their
children' education offers more good than bad. Firstly, this will promote the education-for-
all agenda and improve equality among school children. To explain, since many families
cannot afford to pay for their children's schooling, their children may not be able to go to
school without government's financial support. This leads to an inequality in access to
basic education that children have to experience from an early age. Furthermore,
governments' subsidies for children's education herald their far-sighted vision when they
invest in future generations. Since many talents can come from a poor background,
missing the opportunity to get them to school equals a missed opportunity to nurture a
talent who can make a great contribution to the country later on.

Enabled by highways/superhighways and public transport, employees of companies and
industries can avoid jams commuting to work while more green space can be created in
cities. More importantly, ports and main arteries which are often located nearer to the
outskirts of cities; therefore, the relocation helps boost business productivity because of
the eased process of supply and delivery. Last but not least, regional areas offer a
significantly larger space for building clusters and hubs. For example, in India, giant IT
service companies cluster in Bangalore outskirts to create their own Silicon Valley, more
spacious, better-linked for business.

However, I believe that poverty only makes people stronger. To begin with, poor people are
often left with no choice but to fight, be it a fight for hope or, simply, food. While unfortunate
people in rich countries can live on social security benefits, citizens of poorer countries
often have to work harder to survive. Furthermore, endless struggles can teach people
survival lessons that they normally do not find anywhere else. Japan offers an excellent
example of how poverty and sufferings were turned into dreams and aspirations when the
Japanese magically transformed their country into a superpower after the Second World
War. Last but not least, living in a poorer country, people are constantly required to change
and adapt as change and adaptability are exactly what it needs to get them out of poverty.
In contrast, living in a well developed society, people may feel complacent and less
motivated to strive for success.

There are reasons why many opt for vertical cities. To begin with, they feel a sense of
community when sharing a space with others. Further, many people now prefer living in a
home where everything is laid out on a single floor plan as they see managing an
apartment is less stressful than a house. Finally, many countries simply do not have space
to build horizontal cities. Singapore is a prime example; in this city state, people see high-
rises as an optimal option that marries the needs of both residence and green spaces.
However, I am convinced that horizontal city is better for a number of reasons. Firstly, this
way of urbanisation is more sustainable as it frees people from the stress of living in a
concrete jungle (i.e. a vertical city). Secondly, developing a horizontal city helps minimise
the level of destruction when a city is hit by manmade or natural disasters such as
September 11 attacks or earthquakes. Thirdly, if megacity and skyscrapers become
nothing but an obsession, it is certainly not a good trend. Environmentally speaking, this
trend poses an immense pressure on the world's increasingly scarce resources when
resources are consumed in massive amounts to power these glass walled buildings, let
alone the greenhouse gas emissions during the building process.
In conclusion, though developing vertical cities is an inevitable trend, I would campaign for
horizontal cities as a sustainable future for urban development.

Regarding positive effects, as fewer languages are spoken in more countries, international
communication is eased, which helps boost multilateral trade and cultural exchange. Time
for translation and interpretation activities is reduced and misinterpretations can be
avoided. Furthermore, by acquiring languages which are commonly used in business,
science and technology, researchers, academics and entrepreneurs from less developed
countries can accelerate the process of learning from more developed countries. For
example, Singapore and India achieved such incredible growth partly by making English
their official language.
Despite the benefits, this trend has potential drawbacks. It took a country thousands of
years to develop its own language, hence it is sad to see this integral part of a civilisation
disappear. If a Vietnamese person in the future has to resort to translation to understand
literary classics written in their own language, it would be a worst/pessimistic scenario as
they fail their own mother tongue. More importantly, cultural diversity will be lost altogether
with the disappearance of minority languages. Folk songs, for instance, can hardly survive
if future generations are no longer able to read the lyrics and understand their meanings.
In conclusion, though I believe the trend is inevitable in the era of globalisation, every
country needs to have measures in place to protect their cultural identity of which
language is an integral part.

bi: In recent years, more and more people tend to live individually. What are the
causes of this trend? Does this have a positive or negative effect on society?
First, as some traditional values of family and marriage have been lost, many do not see
the point of sharing lives. For example, family gatherings can be a burden rather than a
cherished present that life brings about. Second, many blame the hectic modern life. The
truth is that people today are just too busy to settle down with a family and all sorts of
responsibilities. Last but not least, thanks to the sharing frenzy on social networking sites,
many successful and seemingly happy individuals became much-trumpeted role models of
this lifestyle. As stories of their wonderful life go viral, many simply consider living a single
life a very fashionable choice.
I do not believe this trend is doing any good for the society as it pulls people away from
one another, weakening them psychologically long before they are aware of it. Now that
the concept of having a family fades away, people are more vulnerable than ever as they
have no home to return in times of sickness or hardships. If a person decides to become a
single parent, it is even worse as their child grows up without care and attention from both
parents. Finally, from a demographic perspective, the trend takes a toll on the development
of a countrys population as it slows down the process of producing new generations to
replace the dying or ageing generations.
Although individuals have every right to decide how they want to live their lives, I still
believe in family as a place to form the wholesomeness of a human being.

bi: Many people believe that media coverage of celebrities is having a negative effect
on children. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
To begin with, almost everyone is attracted to famous people in different ways; within a
family a father may adore Lionel Messi while his daughter is crazy about Lady Gaga, never
wanting to miss any news about the Fame Monster. To some extent, it is acceptable to
glue to the TV box sometimes, watching the star world, if doing so helps one handle the
stress of school work. Further, many celebrities can be a source of inspiration for the
children as they exemplify remarkable efforts in life and work. Finally, celebrities have
seemingly become a popular topic in childrens conversations; failing to get updated can
mean failing to mix with other guys.
But the advantages as presented above sound trivial, compared with the disadvantages.
Everyone is given an equal share of time to spend per day; if a child spends more
watching news about celebrities, he or she will inevitably/unavoidably spend less doing
exercises and reading books. More importantly, celebrities-related news is often packed
with drugs, sex, other bad habits, which hardly/barely does any good for the children. Last
but not least, as they watch stars squander money in what seems to be an easy life, the
immature souls can be lured to risk everything to do the same. The Idols series provides a

very interesting example of how young people with zero singing talent are manipulated in
such a puppet show. In this case, reputation, or to be accurate, bad reputation will haunt
them, possibly for the rest of their lives.

bi: Longer life spans and improvements in the health of older people suggest that
people over the age of sixty-five can continue to live full and active lives.
In what ways can society benefit from the contribution that older people can make?
As the elderly manage to live healthy lives, they will not become a burden on the social
welfare system. Firstly, it releases the pressure which would otherwise be put on a nations
health care system. More importantly, senior citizens are regarded as the living legacy of
wisdom and experience; therefore, the longer and healthier they live, the more they can
pass on to younger generations. In the medical profession, for example, a seasoned
surgical doctor would have a world of knowledge to share with younger colleagues though
he or she may not physically conduct operations after a certain age. Last but not least,
longer and healthier lives of the old people are the most powerful evidence of healthy
lifestyle, which helps inspire young people to do the same. To be more specific, in a family
of heavy drinker and chain smoker, their offspring could find it hard not to drink and smoke
as they may feel it natural to copy those bad habits. The opposite holds true to families of
which older generations set a better example.

bi: In many parts of the world, children and teenagers are committing more crimes.
Why is this happening? How should they be punished?
One of the most important reasons for the phenomenon is that children and teenagers are
now exposed to more bad contents than ever; sex and violence are excessive on
television, video games, films, online and print media. School shootings in the United
States, for example, have been blamed on the lax regulations on possession of personal
weapons. Another reason can be the lack of parental care, which results in a child feeling
lonely, upset and tempted to do something that can win his or her parents attention; in
many cases, doing something bad was sadly a choice. Last but not least, the
surrounding environment plays a very important role in honing a childs behaviour.
Therefore, growing up in a crime-ridden community, a child would find it natural to acquire
bad behaviours they have seen every day.
