High School students hatch chicks in science class

Members of Terry Phifer's Life Science class at

Leonard High School got a "life lesson" the last
few weeks of school in growing and hatching
chicken eggs. The class had forty fertilized
eggs donated by a student's family, which they
allowed to sit in an incubator for forty days.
During this time many students "adopted"
certain eggs and named them and watched them
"cook." The first egg hatched on the 38th day
and the hatching process continued for a 48-hour
period. Out of the forty eggs donated, 27 hatched.
Top left, eggs that have not hatched yet remain
in the incubator. Top right, newly-hatched chicks
socialize among each other under a heat lamp.
At left, Travis Gilbert, T. R. Hodnett, Zackary
Martin, Marissa Bearden, and Tammy Siciliano
show off the chicks that hatched.
