PYLON DESIGN

Maximum load obtained from the QSE analysis for the pylon

2.5*13016= 32532 kN

Determine initial size of the pylon

From the project brief, the minimum face of the pylon should not be less than
span/width ratio of 16

Let total span is 63m

Width (b) = 63/16 = 3.94m

Stability check

Euler bucking load Pe =π2EI/L2

Maximum load (32532) = π2EI/L2

I= = 62 m4

Assume the pylon is square cross-section

I = d4/12 = = d
d = 5m for the base and the 3.1 m square section at the top.

Determine the size of the cable

Maximum load obtained from the QSE analysis is 1991 kN for 2.86m span of the
deck cross-section.

For half section of the deck is 7.15 m

Therefore load = = 4978 kN

Parallel-wire cable is going to be used

Ultimate load for the 7mm diameter strand is 64.3 kN

Diameter of stay = = 542 mm
